HISTORY

Shippensburg University was established in 1871 under the Normal School Act of 1857 as the Cumberland Valley State Normal School. The School received official approval by the state on February 21, 1873, admitted its first class of 217 students on April 15, 1873, and received its first state appropriation of $30,000 in 1877. In 1917, the School was purchased by the Commonwealth for $38,100. On June 4, 1926, the School was authorized to grant the bachelor of science in education degree in elementary and junior high education. By authority of Section 1307 of the 1923 Administrative Code, the School received a charter on October 12, 1926, making it the first normal school in Pennsylvania to become a state teachers college. On June 3, 1927, the State Council of Education authorized the School to change its name to the State Teachers College at Shippensburg effective August 13, 1927. The Act approved April 25, 1929, P.L. 712, provided that it should be the State Teachers College for Adams, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton, Bedford, Huntingdon, and Blair counties. On December 3, 1937, the business education curriculum was approved. On December 8, 1939, Shippensburg State Teachers College became the first teachers college in Pennsylvania and the fourth in the United States to be accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and (Secondary) Schools. The State Council of Education approved graduate work leading to the master of education degree on January 7, 1959. The Act approved January 8, 1960, P.L. 2130, authorized the name change to Shippensburg State College. On April 18, 1962, the arts and sciences curriculum was authorized by the State Council of Education. The bachelor of science in business administration degree program was initiated on September 1, 1967. In January 1975, the Board of State College and University Directors adopted a resolution assigning to Shippensburg the three major missions of liberal arts, business, and teacher education. On November 15, 1979 the Board of State College and University Directors approved the additional missions of human services and public administration. On November 12, 1982, the governor of the Commonwealth signed Senate Bill 506 establishing the State System of Higher Education. Shippensburg State College was designated Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania effective July 1, 1983.

88 COMPUTING TECHNOLOGIES CENTER

Network The Ethernet network consists of a fiber backbone between buildings and 10/100baseT connectivity between classrooms and faculty offices. The fiber backbone now connects all academic and administrative buildings as well as the residence halls. There is a central gigabit Ethernet Switch in the Mathematics and Computing Technologies Building (MCT) that switches the data traffic between buildings and to the Internet. Internet connectivity is via a fiber OC3 link to the SSHE-NET ATM switch in Harrisburg. The SSHE-NET is an ATM network that connects the 14 SSHE schools to each other and provides a gateway to the INTERNET in Philadelphia. The SSHE-NET also provides the data connectivity for the SAP Administrative Computing and the SSHE Personnel system with staff offices at SyTEC (SSHE System Technology Consortium) in Harrisburg and computing resources at Millersville University. It is also the backbone for the Keystone library network that provides library automation capabilities for the SSHE institutions and the State Library. Wireless Access Wireless access to the campus network is available in the Lehman Library, Grove Hall, Franklin Science Center, Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School and the Mathematics and Computing Technologies Center. Any computer having an 802.11b compliant card may use wireless access. The Ethernet address of the card must be registered with the CTC before the network will recognize it. The web page for a student to register a wireless card is located at http://info.ship.edu. (Click on Student Information System, login with your SSN & Library ID, click on Computer Services, click on Wireless Registration) Central Information and Computing Services Several high-speed servers running the Novell Network Operating system service the Ethernet network. These servers provide shareable disk space, print services, and GroupWise calendaring and e-mail. They also serve on-line scheduling, grade reporting, and academic information. There are also servers that provide the physical plant work order system. The Enterprise Server from UNISYS is a model IX5601-B1 system that serves the academic administration systems such as registration, scheduling, student records, accounts receivable, financial aid and admissions. The student information systems are based on the UNISYS relational database using LINC development system tools. The Financial and HR/Payroll systems are based on the SAP FI-MM relational database module of the Shared Administrative System run by SyTEC in Harrisburg.

89 Two Sun servers provide e-mail and domain name service for the INTERNET. They are also used as a platform to teach relational database and query techniques using the ORACLE® software system. Please call FIXX (3499) for service in this area. The CTC maintains a time and materials contract with a local service provider for physical maintenance. The CTC also has a group of graduate students and work-study students who provide software support for microcomputers and who supervise the MCT054, Grove 106, and Shippen Hall labs.
