Mathematics in SpaceGeorge LegendreArchitectural Design (AD) series978-0-470-68980-6 / 0-470-68980-3448 pp. Pub: 08/07/11

A new title in the Architectural Design series that explores the potential of computational mathematics incutting-edge design.

Mathematics has always been a vital tool in the architect's trade, but the last fifteen years have seen asharp rise in the power of computers and has led to computational abilities far beyond anything previouslyavailable. Modern design software and computing power have changed the traditional role of geometry inarchitecture and opened up new possibilities enabled by topology, non-Euclidean geometry, and otherareas of mathematics.

With insight from a top-notch list of contributors, including such notables as Mark Burry, Bernard Cache,Philippe Morel and Fabien Scheurer, Mathematics in Space discusses how the advent of computation andinformation technology has affected the work of contemporary architects.

• This new title in the Architectural Design series updates architectural mathematics since the digitalrevolution.• With world-class contributors, this is an essential resource for anyone interested in the wayscomputation has transformed the discipline.• The book explores fascinating issues in modern design, most importantly the impact of mathematics oncontemporary design creativity.

The Urban Towers HandbookEric Firley and Julie Gimbal978-0-470-68474-0 / 0-470-68474-7272 pp. Pub: 03/06/11

For well over a century, the modern skyscraper has provided an ingenious solution to high-density living andworking – accommodating the greatest number of people in a building with a minimal footprint. In thecontemporary context of drastic urban growth, its role can only gain in importance. The question is how toavoid past mistakes and how to conceive the tower as a positive component of an existing or newly createdurban fabric. In a thoroughly analytical and comparative way The Urban Towers Handbook provides answersto these questions and serves as a reference book and design tool for architects, planners and developersalike. Its comprehensive graphic documentation includes not only aerials and to-scale plans and sections, butalso purpose-made photography, drawings and diagrams.

• Provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of high-rise towers in their urban context.• Includes newly commissioned drawings, drawn to scale: urban plans, floor plans, sections and elevations.• Features newly commissioned photography.• Presents 21 in-depth case studies of iconic towers, such as the Eiffel Tower, Chrysler Building and

Rockefeller Tower.• It illustrates some 50 contemporary and future towers and provides additional sections on building

regulations in 7 cities worldwide and the relationship between high-rise towers and sustainability.

Eric Firley is the author of The Urban Housing Handbook, (Wiley 2009). An architect and urban designer, heis currently based in Paris. Since studying in Lausanne, Weimar and London, he has worked in severalpractices and design consultancies in France and the UK.Julie Gimbal is a French art historian with a special interest in high-rise architecture. Scripting Cultures: Architectural Design and ProgrammingMark BurryAD Primer series978-0-470-74642-4 / 0-470-74642-4208 pp. Pub: 25/03/11

This book looks at computer programming (scripting) incorporated as part of the design process. Scriptingrefers to the capabilities within many design software packages that allow the user to customise the softwarearound their own predilections and modes of working. It also automates routine aspects and repetitiveactivities within design such as making multiple versions but each copy being different in some unique way,freeing-up the designer to spend more time on design thinking.

Customisation affords the designer opportunities to not only escape the strictures inherent in any software butalso to experiment. Software modified by the designer through scripting offers a range of speculations that aresimply not possible using the software only as the manufacturers intended it to be used. The advantage ofautomating routines and coupling them with emerging digital fabrication technologies, significant costreductions can be achieved by saving time at the front-end and taking advantage of the new file-to-factoryprotocols.

• Because scripting is effectively a computing program overlay, the tool user (designer) becomes the newtoolmaker (software engineer).

• A book on scripting by one of the world’s specialists on architectural programming and the parametric.• A very timely topic - scripting is now becoming a pre-requisite skill for architects.• Combines cultural and technical insights.

Mark Burry is Professor of Innovation (Spatial Information Architecture) at RMIT in Melbourne, Australia, where he is also Director of the Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory and Director of the DesignResearch Institute. He is Member of the Advisory Board of Gehry Technologies in Los Angeles, USA. Burry isprobably best known for his work on Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, where he is ExecutiveArchitect and Researcher, and has been working for twenty years on the realisation of the completion ofGaudi's vision through computer-aided techniques.

Brand Valued: How socially valued brands hold the key to a sustainable future and business successGuy Champniss, Fernando Rodés Vilá978-1-119-97667-7 / 1-119-97667-7314 pp. Pub: 24/06/11

A new brand management model for the development of social capital as a means of engaging with and buildingtrust with consumers.

As experts in the communications field, the idea for this book has been born from the authors' research aboutthe role of brands in society in general, but especially in the area of sustainability. They have discovered that theroot cause of the problems we face in terms of the CSR/sustainability agenda is a collapse in Social Capital. IfSocial Capital can be improved and grown (i.e. if more sustainable lifestyles can be created via large-scalebehaviour change) we all stand to benefit in the long term.

Brand Valued is based on a relatively simple and self-fulfilling model. The authors present new techniques thatwill assist brand managers, marketers, corporate communications specialists, account handlers and agency-side communication strategists to create better dialogue and communication with their audiences (e.g. bybecoming involved in shared thinking). The bond that is created through this connection creates deeper trust, which in turn has a net increase in Social Capital. Not only does society benefit from the messages promoted bythe brand, but the brand forms strong and lasting connections - and trust - with customers.

Guy Champniss is Global Director of Business Insights and Fernando Rodés Vilá is ex-CEO of Havas, theworld's 5th largest communications group whose HQ is in Paris. With a turnover of over 14bn euros, Havasemploys 18,000 people across a range of communications agencies, all of which are "exploring" the issues inthe book. Fernando is also Chairman of CreaFutur (a Catalonian Think Tank very active in the sustainabilityarea). Not only are both authors experts in this field, they are recognized commentators on the topic and havelinks with key industry bodies who respect their opinions and research. Their research has also been shared withkey academic bodies such as London Business School, Ashridge and IESE in Spain.
