NORTH CAMPUS RESIDENT ASSISTANT TRAINING | FALL 2015 4
Most Significant Open-ended Responses
The following information identifies the most frequent responses given to the open ended questions. I could benefit from additional training in certain areas to strengthen my RA skills
Fall 2014 More duty protocol training Additional BCD scenarios
Fall 2013 Behind Closed Doors scenarios/Hands On Activities Community Development Brainstorming Returner Insight/Panels Large Group Confrontation Diversity/Multiculturalism Administration/Voice Mail set up
What was the most beneficial aspect of training?
Fall 2014 Behind Closed Doors Staff Bonding (during hall prep, time with Team
Leaders, early arrival) Weekend off
Fall 2013 Behind Closed Doors implementing skills they
learned Breaks between sessions to reenergize Staff Bonding (most made mention to it as informal
interactions only a few with regard to the ERC, skit, etc.)
What was missing during RA training that you think should be added next year?
Fall 2014 Diversity (religious, political, personal views) Staff Development (teambuilding, field day, inter-
staff games, mini-competitions) Floor prep
Fall 2013 More hands on activities (BCD, practice rounds) More building prep time (not always after dinner) More co-time/planning time Ways in which to engage with residents
Other feedback or suggestions you would like to share about RA training.
Fall 2014 A bit repetitive (diversity sessions) Pretty even split between those who liked Easton
camping and those that didnt Weekend off relieved stress Dont do repetitive presentations between years Idea generating across communities Well structures and organized Returners should be able to come back and skip
certain sessions Shorten sessions
Fall 2013 Large sessions were hard to pay attention in Food was much better Sign up for BCD differently Day of rest/building prep Skit may not be necessary/takes away too much
time from hall prep Flipping training sessions online, put into
practice while in classroom setting Build in more structured breaks
Changes to F15 Training The Committee has listened to lots of feedback and hopes that this is our best year yet! Along with the evaluations, Tiffany visited RA/CA Counsel took a significant amount of feedback. We feel confident that the RAs will see an obvious reaction it. There are some things that cannot be changed but overall here are a few major changes from last year: returners optional move in date, shortened session lengths, more skills based topics, less repetitive sessions for returners, two afternoons of BCD (we know this is still the same as we usually do, but were wondering if our trickery will work), community teambuilding day, and more! We know well never accommodate everyone, but we sure tried.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE TRAINING SCHEDULE
Staff Arrivals Team Leaders: Saturday, August 15th between 8:00 a.m. 6:45 p.m. New & Mid-Year Hires: Sunday, August 16th between 8:00 a.m. 6:45 p.m. Returning RAs: Sunday, August 16th Tuesday, August 18th by 6:45 p.m.
Training Schedule The training schedules will be printed and provided to you by Wednesday, August 14th. Presenter names are in black and Moderator names are in blue.
Session Plans & Objectives Session plans are in the training folder under Training Sessions. Please present your sessions according to these plans as they were created to have a consistent message reach RAs in the particular topic area. Also, please make sure to not rely on internet or remote desktop if technology is involved in your presentation, as weve seen that some rooms have minimal wireless connection and/or have technology issues. Oakland Hall does not have HDMI access.
RA Attendance at Training Sessions All Resident Assistants are expected to attend all training activities. All of the information distributed to the RAs has indicated that their presence at all of training is mandatory and non-negotiable (outside of academic commitments). Still, its inevitable that there will be conflicts. When considering requests from an RA to miss a part of training, please create a consistent precedent for your staff members. Summer school ends on Friday, August 21st this year so we may have an increased amount of conflicts, but consider these on a case-by-case basis and feel free to ask how others are handling situations.
RD Attendance at Sessions After our conversation on July 22nd during the training meeting, we agreed to several expectations of ourselves during training. If you are not presenting and choose to attend sessions, please role model appropriate behavior by not whispering or chatting during sessions (at all, because some of us do not recognize how loud our whispering voice is). If you must have a conversation with a colleague during a presentation, please step out of the room and move far enough away from the entrance that you cannot be heard. It is understood that some RDs may need to manage their workload while sitting in sessions, but please do not distract anyone. A moderator has been assigned to sessions with outside presenters. This allows us all the opportunity to trust that if we are not able to make a training session, the moderator will represent all of us. While it is exceptional to attend every training session, our job is unpredictable at times and it is understood that not everyone will always be in attendance. Feel free to work out a plan by community about session attendance if you would like to create structure for yourselves. Additionally, RDs should hold any and all RAs accountable during training. Please do not hesitate to remind RAs, whether or not theyre your direct supervisees, that they should be fully engaged in all training sessions. The training committee will inform RAs that they may not work on door decorations, academic work, etc. during training sessions. If you make a specific allowance for a particular RA, please make sure the moderator knows and that person sits near the back of the room.

NORTH CAMPUS RESIDENT ASSISTANT TRAINING | FALL 2015 6
Role of a Moderator If you are scheduled as a Moderator (noted in blue on the schedule in this packet) you are the RD representative during the presentation. Please introduce the presenter, unless theyd like to introduce themselves and act as the ResLife Point-Of-View should any department-specific questions come up. Please kindly interrupt the presenter if they are giving false information. Keep the presenter on time if they seem to be off track. Make sure to have the RAs leave the room in the same condition it was found in the first place. Moderators should be fully engaged in the session and not working on anything else. Keep an eye on distracted/disengaged RAs and encourage them to change their behavior. Sit anywhere in the room that feels most comfortable. The RAs should expect that the moderator will hold them accountable for their behavior. Should any particular RA show continuous negative behavior, please share that information with their specific supervisor.
Room Reservation List The following is a list of all of the rooms reserved throughout training. All of the rooms are technology enabled. We may need the Cambridge staff to access the CCC technology though. The Event ID associated with the Scheduling Office is RESIDENT SU15. This should be used as a resource if a complication arises and/or anyone is questioned about use of a particular room. All of the rooms have been reserved under Allisons UID (112262839). Tiffany also has swipe access to rooms if necessary. If there are any complications, please call 973- 487-8925 and Allison will respond. Lee requested the entire CCC for the duration of training. So if we ever run into a scheduling issue, any of the available rooms could be used. The following list is what is reserved outside of the CCC and LaPlata MPR.

TRAINING A-Z
Daily Updates If any updates need to be made for the day, staff will be informed during the Morning Meet Up.
Duty From August 15th through August 17th the Team Leaders will serve on duty for the RA staff. Two TLs will check in, in-person at the Easton desk at 7:00 p.m. One TL will cover the Denton Community and the other will cover Ellicott and Cambridge communities. We will allow them to be accessible by cell phone with the requirement to be on North Campus in one of the halls while on duty. They will also check in by phone at 11:00 p.m. to make sure there are no communication errors. RD Cory will work with C&VS to make sure the plan is clear and Allison will connect with the RDs on duty those evenings.
RAs will check in for duty from August 18th through August 22nd by calling the Easton desk (4-3278) by 7:00 p.m. each evening. Please do not let them check in any earlier than 6:00 p.m. as the CVS staff has a shift change at that time. Make sure to update your duty calendar and staff roster in the training folder as soon as possible. Last of all, please be patient if the CVS staff needs to track down a RA that hasnt checked in as this is not a typical job requirement for them.
Evaluations RA Training Evaluations will be available online and must be completed by the first week of school (specific date will be shared when confirmed). The link will be shared by Joann through email to the RAs and is located at http://studentvoice.com/mary/juneaugratraining if you would like to share as well. Please do not provide this link to your staff until the end of training. The training committee will provide reminders and update you as to where your staff stands as the completion date approaches.
General Tasks There are just some things that dont fall into the daily training grind. Here are some ideas of items you may want to cover during the training experience that are more flexible than others:
Building Banner Decorating Room Checks: Call 4-WORK or email [email protected] with any repairs (lists are appreciated) Room Stuffing Set up LLP meeting times (hopefully Wednesday, August 19th) Online training modules Test IRs into Maxient (they will be writing an IR based on one BCD scenario, so please make the deadline
afterward)

NORTH CAMPUS RESIDENT ASSISTANT TRAINING | FALL 2015 9
The Green Room (Centralized Resource Room) We are reestablishing a centralized resource room for another year. The LaPlata MPR will be used to house supplies that all RAs can share throughout training. All RAs will have access to LaPlata 0100 through the four main doors on the first floor level and the ground floor entrance near the Dining parking lot until Sunday, August 23rd at 6:00 p.m.
Additionally, the following cleaning schedule will be implemented this year. Cleaning up behind oneself was a major issue during our inaugural year, so please remind all RAs that it is an expectation. A checklist will be posted on the inside of the entry door to the room and staffs will be responsible for cleaning up one evening during training. Each RD may choose how many people you send to clean up the room, just as long as all of the tasks are completed. On Sunday the 23rd, the chosen staffs will break down the room with Allison and return all items to their appropriate homes. The following is the cleaning schedule and daily tasks (please let Allison know if anyone will be swapping):

Cleaning supplies will be located in the MPR for use by any RA at any time.

Human Resources (RA Paperwork) Time has been held in the schedule for new RAs to submit paperwork on Monday, August 17th from 11:00 12:00 p.m. Preferably, returners will do it before Wednesday, August 19th on their own time. Allison is confirming a process for doing this most efficiently. More details will be provided in email when they become available.

NORTH CAMPUS RESIDENT ASSISTANT TRAINING | FALL 2015 10
Late Hires If you hire a new RA after July 22nd, please make sure to share the newsletter with them when they accept the position. You may send them a link to the newsletter as it has been uploaded to http://tinyurl.com/RAGuideF15. The importance of the newsletter is that it has a link to the survey so we get their preferred name, t-shirt size, dietary restrictions and parking information. If you hire someone new after August 10th, it is very important to let Allison know so she can share that information with parking. Everything else is manageable at a later date.
Meals Three meals a day will be provided to our staff in the North Campus Diner during RA training, with a few exceptions. On Sunday, August 16th the Team Leaders use meal cards for lunch and dinner (these will be provided by the training committee). Meals for team leaders, new and mid-year hires start on Monday, August 17th with breakfast and meals for returners start Wednesday, August 19th with breakfast. We are taking Kosher, Gluten Free, Vegetarian and Vegan requests into consideration. All meals during training are mandatory for RAs to attend.
Important: The training committee would like to be proactive with regard to meals and Returning RAs. Because Returning RAs will have access to their rooms with the understanding that meals do not start until Wednesday, August 19th, we (Allison) foresees that there may be some attempt by some to sneak into the Diner on Monday or Tuesday to eat. In order to send a consistent reminder to the Returners that this is unacceptable, the training committee will email Returner Expectations to each RD and ask that you share the expectations with those who may arrive early. It is fine for a Returner to be a paying customer in the Diner. Our expectations were already shared at Jump Start, so it shouldnt be anything new. But to be consistent, if a returner chooses to sneak into the Diner and eat, we should hold them responsible for intentional theft from the University and job action should occur.
See Donnas email (to come) about opening day meal logistics regarding 251 North and the North Campus Diner.
MyDRL Access Remember to remove your old RAs and add your new RAs to MyDRL in the following location so that they have access to all that mydrl has to offer. Make sure to add them to the Fall 2015 list.
Online Training New RAs must finish three online training modules. The online training includes Child Abuse and Neglect, Community Development Database and Dangerous Groups. Both New and Returning RAs will need to complete the Outlook E-mail module once it is posted. This information is listed on the bottom of the training schedule and RAs can find the modules at http://training.reslife.umd.edu. The online Sustainability module should be completed by your first community meeting.

NORTH CAMPUS RESIDENT ASSISTANT TRAINING | FALL 2015 11
Parking Please refer to the Summer Newsletter for specific information concerning parking on campus for RAs during training. Due to the fact that Summer Session II overlaps training, more stringent parking requirements are in place. Additionally, RAs were asked to provide information concerning their cars to the training committee by August 2nd. If an RA did not provide the training committee with the requested information, they are responsible for paying the daily parking rate in a garage. Both RAs that are able to register as well as those with 60 or less credits need to fill out the form at http://tinyurl.com/Parking15.
The partial move-in plan will go into effect on August 16th to allow the RAs to move-in. According to Donna, the full plan will go into effect on Wednesday, August 26th so it is absolutely necessary to move cars to a valid lot that does not have a yellow move-in/move out sign on Tuesday, August 25th. Any person who does not do this will be responsible for the associated ticket. This reminder is listed on the training schedule.
Incorporation of RA Course In each session you present, please remember that RAs have taken part in the RA Course. Remind them that they should reflect back on conversations in the course during spring 2015. Please build on the RA Course and by trusting that the RAs have learned the basics necessary for the position during the spring.
RA/CA/CSS Time An outline for RA/CA Time on Friday, August 21st is located in the training folder. Well be using the same format as last year. The CSS will be taking the lead determining the icebreaker for this evening. After speaking with the Ad Ops staff it was determined that RDs will have a Senior/Head RA (or other designee) meet with the CSS at lunch on Friday, August 21st to go over the outline for the evening with each other. The two will work together to facilitate the evenings bonding time. The RDs will introduce themselves but allow the student leaders to work through expectations of one another and such. The RD should take advantage of lunch with the CSS on Tuesday, August 18th to finalize any details/expectations they have of each other. The RD will obviously be involved in this entire session providing context to questions that may arise, but does not have to be the sole facilitator of the session.
RD/CSS Meeting This years RD/CSS lunch will take place on Tuesday, August 18th from 12:00 1:00 p.m. in Union. You will meet your CSS outside of the bookstore on the Sbarro level. Take this time to share expectations you have of each other and ways in which youll work together to serve the students of your building/area. Look over the RA/CA Bonding outline and make sure you are comfortable with each persons role. Please focus the bulk of your conversation on how you will communicate with the CSS and build a partnership.
RD Responsibilities The training committee will be placing RD presentation, moderator and general attendance sessions onto each persons individual calendar. Please make sure that you double check our work as mistakes may happen. Here is a link to the master copy for your perusal.
Removed from Last Year This year we will not use Guidebook for the training schedule as it was not used effectively last year. Also, all decorating contests will take place by individual community (if they take place at all).

NORTH CAMPUS RESIDENT ASSISTANT TRAINING | FALL 2015 12
Staff Meetings & Hall Prep Each evening on the schedule starting Tuesday, August 18th is denoted as Individual Staff Meeting & Hall Prep. This gives you the ability to create an in-hall training schedule based on the needs of your staff. Ideas for In-Hall training topics are listed in this document at the end of each daily page. Feel free to manage this as you please.
Please take advantage of the time sanctioned as hall prep time for your staff rather than considering this time as off. This year the RAs will have both Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd for Hall Prep as well. Please make sure that the halls are ready to go by the date of your choosing. This means that at minimum, all bulletin boards should be posted, new door decorations should be on each door and any lobby areas should welcome the returning students. Typically, the CSS & CA staff take on the bulk of the work decorating the lobby area. If you would like to incorporate your RAs into the decoration of the lobby, please speak with the CSS ahead of time.
Please make your deadline for hall prep before Tuesday, August 25th to encourage RAs to have the last evening or two off and to reenergize for opening.
Pictures Full RA Staff, Community Staff and Individual Staff pictures will be taken during the closing session on Wednesday, August 26th during the afternoon. Please make sure your staff members are aware that this will be happening so that they wear their community t-shirt. Additionally, please compile an individual staff picture roster for Laura and place them in the North Campus folder.
The following RDs have requested building photos for their new residents: Cumberland, Denton, Easton, Elkton, Hagerstown & LaPlata. Donna will coordinate.
Team Leaders This year well call the Team Leaders, Production Assistants to go along with our television theme. The training committee has entrusted the Team Leaders with facilitation of an even larger part of training than last year. They are incorporated as presenters, on panels, as BCD group leaders and will be responsible for several social activities. We have found that RAs respond positively when their peers present training sessions and we are hoping to continue that trend this year. These RAs are volunteering their time to help role model appropriate behavior for the new RAs, so please feel free to recognize their efforts in any way you choose. We hope that the Team Leaders will serve as a role model outside of your newly hired RAs direct staff as to build the relationship of RAs across North Campus.
Theme & Spirit This years training theme is T.G.I.T. (Thank Goodness Its Training) based off of television. Please feel free to incorporate it into presentations or your individual staff time if youd like, especially consider using television clips to get main points across. The Team Leaders will determine many of the spirit options and we will evaluate the effect of those after training and determine the course of action for fall 2016.
T-shirt Delivery T-shirts are scheduled to be delivered to community offices on Thursday, August 14th. Please make sure to pull your t-shirts for the RAs (and hide them) for the t-shirt reveal on Thursday, August 20th. The RAs will need the shirts for staff pictures on Wednesday, August 26th.

OVERVIEW OF THE TRAINING DAY
This entire day has a focus on campus resources that are helpful for new RAs to know. The afternoon is a new take on the Resource Fair and consists of short sessions where 7 different campus entities will have direct face-time with the RAs. During the chaplain ice cream social, well ask RDs to serve as middle people to break the ice between the RAs and each chaplain. Both lunch and dinner will take place in the South Campus Dining Hall today for ease of access to the training sessions since were collaborating with the South Campus RAs. There is a short session before dinner that gives the RD time to meet with their new staff members. You may choose what you would like to cover during that time. No locations have been determined for this meeting, so please feel free to choose that on your own and share it with your RAs. Possible meeting places include: Hornbake, the Stamp, Annapolis lobby or MPRs, outside on the mall, etc. This evening, during your individual staff meet and greets spend time introducing your returning staff to the new staff members. Remember that you will have (almost) the entire day Wednesday to cover Community information and hold some teambuilding activities, so you do not necessarily have to delve deep into training topics this evening.

RD TASKS
Chaplain buddy during ice cream social. Icebreakers with staff. If you would like a classroom space for your RD/New RA meeting, let Allison know and she will reserve one for you.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NOT LISTED ON THE TRAINING SCHEDULE
We have significantly minimized the amount of presenters that typically attend the resource fair as we found several things: 1. Some resource fair participants were already included in training, 2. Some RAs did not use the resource fair to their advantage and just picked up flyers and left, 3. Many flyers and handouts were immediately thrown away/recycled in the Stamp after leaving the fair, 4. RAs did not always visit tables where flyers/swag werent being handed out, 5. Its an added cost that wasnt providing the intended outcome. There will be a short evaluation of this experience for RAs to fill out and provide feedback about its effectiveness.
All flyers and handouts that RAs would typically get during the resource fair will be delivered to RDs ahead of time to share with staff. Additionally, a resource binder will be created with documents that the RAs could access should they need information about a particular resource.
South Campus will be sending their entire staff through the Resource Showcase. Logistically, we couldnt make it work this year. Please make note of any significant feedback your staff may have about the way in which things are set up to provide that feedback for the future.
Returning RAs move into permanent spaces by 6:45 p.m. Individual staff duty begins. LUNCH WITH YOUR CSS AT THE STAMP. IT IS ON YOUR OUTLOOK CALENDAR.

OVERVIEW OF THE TRAINING DAY
This Community Day is held for the entire community to get together and cover topics that are community focused and include some teambuilding activities since a field day/teambuilding time isnt built into training this year. This session is purely based on the interest of the CD/RDs and issues concerning the entire community. You can work together as a community staff to determine what topics youll be covering and how it will be laid out. You may want to include LLP partnerships and community tours in this section. Lunch will take place in the Diner with the housekeepers.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NOT LISTED ON THE TRAINING SCHEDULE
A separate outline will be provided for the housekeeper session with locations for seating and picture taking. OVERVIEW OF THE TRAINING DAY
This day will be handled primarily by outside presenters around topics that explain how incidents should be handled from start to finish. The morning sessions for new and returning RAs are completely different. The returning RAs will take part in the Step Up presentation, so Cambridge Community returning RAs who already took part in this will not be required to attend. This morning would be a great time to take advantage of being if your office, if necessary. This afternoon provides a short break after lunch for returning RAs to take care of any personal errands they may need to attend do. All RDs will also have a session where they can go over their expectations regarding incident reports. Finally, we have added a new session for New & Mid-Year Hire RAs regarding following up after an incident. Jack will take the lead on this with the help of the Team Leaders provide some awkward scenarios for the RAs and explain how having a positive, negative or neutral relationship with residents can affect them during this interaction. At lunch, were asking the Senior/Head RAs (or a staff designee) to sit with the CSS of the building and talk over the icebreaker the CSS has planned for that evenings RA/CA Bonding. Just like last year, the students will take the lead in facilitating this interaction as a way to both take the pressure off of RDs as well as give them the opportunity to come up with expectations from a student perspective instead of the RD leading the conversation. The evening RA/CA Bonding session information is on page 12 and the outline is located in the training folder.

OVERVIEW OF THE TRAINING DAY
This morning Counseling and Mental Health will provide an overview of their services. It is quite possible that some of the same information will be shared with RAs as last year. Please prepare your staff to use their active listening skills throughout the sessions. The new RAs will then attend a prep session for BCD to answer last minute questions about the experience.
BCD Part 1 will take place in LaPlata Hall this afternoon. The returners will receive their assignments the morning of Friday, August 21
st. The BCD Packet will be provided to each RD at a later date and will include location and rotation information for each group and
scenario.
The scenarios on Monday afternoon are those focusing on topics parallel to the topics they will talk about with Counseling and Mental Health during the morning sessions. Some may be more intense than others. RAs should expect to have to ask more probing questions to find out what the actual concern is. Please manage your group as youd like concerning the RAs who will be taking the lead in handling the situation. Be mindful of RAs who may have negative reactions to the difficult topics they will be facing. We are hoping that getting the tough scenarios out of the way the first day will ease some anxiety that some RAs feel about the BCD experience.
Debriefing will take place by community at the locations on the schedule. Returners/Actors will not be required to attend the debriefing as we hope they will share their feedback in the actually scenario rooms. We kept the debriefing locations in LaPlata as to not create unnecessary travel time.
RD TASKS
Lead group around during BCD. Plan debriefing session with CD. Give expectations to RAs with international students concerning the ice cream social.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NOT LISTED ON THE TRAINING SCHEDULE
All RAs will have access to LaPlata for the resource room and will continue to have access for BCD.

OVERVIEW OF THE TRAINING DAY
The Afternoon Meet Up will occur in Marie Mount Hall and the picture on the mall as long as the weather cooperates with us. Well have a snack (either Ritas or Dippin Dots). The logistics of the event will be shared closer to the 26
th. If the weather is bad, well take
the large group picture in Marie Mount 1400 and may leave staff pictures up to the individual RDs. We should have several extra photographers this year to make the picture taking quicker and less painless.
RD TASKS
Remind staff to wear their community shirts today for the group picture in the afternoon. Herd your staff to the mall for picture taking at the designated time to make the schedule run smoothly.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NOT LISTED ON THE TRAINING SCHEDULE
The best thing you could do when you arrive for the picture is keep your staff together. Having multiple people yelling at the large group is not typically helpful.
