Professional Programs Courses Outline

Who Should Attend?ESS courses and programs are primarily designed for engineers and scientists. However, technicians, lawyers and other professionals who are working in engineering or science-related industries, governmental agencies, universities or research institutes may also find the programs helpful in strengthening their knowledge of a given topic.

Method of InstructionLectures, case studies, discussions and visual aids are used to present course material. The laboratories and computer facilities at AUC are available to participants. The teaching materials are in English and are selected from recent sources. However, to improve communication between lecturers and participants, both Arabic and English may be used in instruction.Participants who are enrolled in professional programs are entitled to a Blackboard account. Blackboard is a web-based course management system that is designed to allow students and faculty members to communicate and use online materials and activities that complement face-to-face instruction. Through Blackboard, faculty members are able to add online resources for students, thereby enhancing the teaching and learning process.

Online Programs and CoursesESS also offers programs for participants who are too busy to attend regular face-to-face courses or who are working and living outside of Cairo. Since participants may lack previous experience in conducting online courses, online instruction and technical assistance will be available to help them overcome any issues.

Welding Engineering (WLEN)The objective of the Professional Program in Welding Engineering is to introduce engineers to various welding techniques, technologies and welding designs. The program discusses the metallurgical characteristics of welding materials, as well as the bases for selecting welding electrodes and welding consumables. The application of welding codes and standards in various welding fields will also be discussed in this program. Upon the successful completion of the program, participants will be qualified as professional welding engineers.Method of InstructionThis is a distance-learning program. Candidates must have access to Windows (2000, Vista and 7), Microsoft Office and an Internet browser (Explorer or Netscape). Course materials are offered in English and are selected from recent sources. Case studies, course assignments and examinations are used to assess participants in this program.Program RequirementsTo complete the requirements of the Professional Certificate in Welding Engineering, candidates must successfully complete six courses. Five of the courses are required and must be taken by all candidates (WLEN 010, WLEN 020, WLEN 030, and WELN 040) one elective course may be selected from the group of other courses according to individual interest. Certificate requirements can be completed in one year, but participants may take up to three years to complete the program.
