NATIONAL FORUM


What is the YPN?• Mission ‐ To bring together representatives from provincial

and territorial member organization YP Groups, to facilitate communication and info‐sharing between provinces; to provide guidance and recommendations to ACEC regarding issues affecting YPs.

• Vision ‐ The YPN will unite and strengthen the YP network across Canada by promoting best practices and leadership while also creating a network of cross‐disciplined and diverse engineers who will be the future leaders of the Canadian consulting engineering industry.

What are the Goals for the YPN?• To create a forum allowing YP Groups from across Canada

to share ideas and best practices

• To assist in the development of the YP business program at the ACEC Summit

• To serve as the voice of YPs to ACEC

• To promote ACEC and its activities to YPs across Canada

• To provide leadership and guidance for the development of new provincial YP Groups across Canada

Why YP?• Engineers learn technical skills in school – then have to face the

business of engineering at work!

• Help develop professional development strategy of young engineers crossing all disciplines

• Leadership & networking opportunities for YPs

• Assist with succession planning for firms (Baby Boomers just started reaching age of retirement)

• Promote YPs & help them integrate into the consulting engineering industry

British Columbia – OverviewBy Allison Clavelle

• Developed a new committee structure and terms of reference

• Better defined and developed regional groups on Vancouver Island and the Okanagan

• Expanded professional development of YPGs through additional breakfast seminars including regional ones

• Continued networking events via socials

• Established a volunteer network for interested YP’s

• ACEC‐BC’s Young Professional of the Year award recipient: Mike Homenuke

British Columbia – Goals for 2012By Allison Clavelle

• Properly establish and work through redefined terms of reference and committee structure. Revise documents as necessary

• Explore additional avenues to deliver PD seminars more efficiently with improved content

• Improve documentation of our YPG group

• Develop community involvement further, with goal to improve exposure for engineers and donate money to GEERing Up! (engineering summer camp for children).

1. Have a Solid Introduction

2. Don’t Confuse People with your Pitch

3. Don’t tell a story

4. Spend more time listening than talking

5. Avoid being socially Inept

6. Don’t overstay your welcome

7. Hand out your business card, not your resume.

Why Success is about Relationships• Information overload keeps us informed and “connected”, but it makes

it hard to maintain relationships.

• Personal/professional networks are where opportunities come from

• Strong relationships make it easier to get information (information is power)

• Relationships get you through tough times (personal, job, business)

• As you climb the corporate ladder, the stakes become greater.

• You will want people to look you in the eye and know who you are, and know that you will do what you say to get the job done.

What is a Connector?• Connectors seem to know everyone. They are always able to help, and

if they cannot, they know someone who can!

• Connectors are often willing to take chances, willing to learn and apply new skills.

• Connecting is NOT the same as networking.

• Coopetition

• A word the author developed to describe a combination of Cooperation and Competition. This generation understands how to share, but also protect their own interests.

• Important to disconnect from time‐to‐time.

Three V’s of Leadership• Leadership is needed to help promote innovation, improvement of

processes, and create a sense of ownership for those involved in the process.

• V 1 ‐ Vision

• Inspiring people to look enthusiastically towards the future that you describe

• V 2 ‐ Visible

• Communicate your strategy in person so that it is clear, visible and tangible.

• V 3 ‐ Value

• How do collaborators contribute to get closer to your vision? What does it mean for them?

• We are all looking towards a common vision from different perspectives.

• Engineers need to make their vision tangible to others in project (may/may not have similar technical background) in a short period of time.

Small Scale Items• Many collaborators help solve

big problems. Know what you know, know how to get help when you need it.

• Be willing to try new things

• Curiosity will take you places you might not be able to imagine today.
