EQUINE NUTRITION – BASIC RULES

Nutrition is a crucial element of successful breeding, complementing in its essence the entire breeding effort which begins with the choice of genetic material and continues throughout the training period . It is a competence that requires experience combined with intuition and superior observational skills . It also calls for continuous learning, staying abreast of the latest developments in equine nutrition .

For many horses are a passion, while for others they are also an investment . Proper nutrition of a horse from this perspective, whether it be a reigning champion or a companion for weekend trail rides, has a direct impact on its health, behaviour, performance and value .

The negative effects of improper nutrition are not always immediately visible . Sometimes it may take a few months or even a year or a few years before an unbalanced ration or harmful dietary component leads to a disorder in the proper functioning of organs – most commonly the liver and kidneys or respiratory system . Illnesses related to improper feeding are most often exposed during periods of weakness such as shedding, decreased immunity and condition or intense physical exertion . The investment we make in the proper nutrition and balanced diet of broodmares, foals, growing horses, athletes and recreational horses will have a direct benefit for their long-term health and condition.

A proper diet covering current nutritional needs, properly balanced and varied rations, forages over concentrates, unlimited access to fresh water, regular feeding times and high quality of the feed are the most important principles in horse nutrition . These are not just the whimsies of nutritionists and veterinarians but the consequence of the specific structure of a horse’s digestive system.

The need to adhere to these requirements and recommendations stems from the complex nature of the horse. The proper course of a horse’s digestive processes is very easy to disrupt, and this paves the way to digestive track disorders and digestive system illnesses . In order to reduce the risk of undesirable situations, which may have serious consequences, it is important to follow the basic rules of equine nutrition .

The most important rules are:• Appropriate feeding frequency and amount of feed: due to its small capacity

and inability to regurgitate food, a horse’s stomach can easily become overloaded, which causes excessive and rapid fatigue in horses at work and can cause colic; therefore, a horse should be fed frequently but in small amounts; it is assumed that the amount of concentrated feed in each ration should not exceed 0 .5 kg of feed / 100 kg of body weight .

• Chewing: proper chewing is very important (especially as concerns forage, which is rich in hard-to-digest fiber); therefore, in order for the horse to allocate sufficient time for thorough chewing of food, it is necessary to feed him a minimum of 1 kg of forage / 100 kg of body weight per day . Never shred hay on your own, as you run the risk of your horse swallowing (rather than chewing) forage .

• Correct feeding order: food is “stacked” in the horse’s stomach according to the order of its intake, as a result of which the food that was consumed first remains at the bottom of the stomach for a longer period of time and is therefore longer subject to the action of digestive juices; horses should always be given hay first before serving concentrates, as hay takes longer to digest and also because the attending chewing action will create better conditions in the digestive system to digest hard feeds .

• Proper feed composition: due to the specific structure of the its gastrointestinal tract, and in particular the colon’s double loop shape which is susceptible to obstruction and accumulation of gases, the horse should be given feed that will not easily swell or ferment as this would result in the production of gases that expand the digestive system and can lead to colic .

• Proper rest: physical exertion and psychological strain on the horse directly after feeding can lead to digestive upset – first of all, the digestive content in the stomach will not be sufficiently saturated with gastric juice, which leads to bacterial breakdown of food and increased gas and lactic acid secretion, which may result in colic; therefore, after feeding, the horse should be allowed to rest for at least one hour .

• Regular feeding schedule: it is important to keep consistent grazing hours, as regular feeding promotes better use of nutrients .

• Gradual implementation of changes: the transition from one feed to another must be slow; therefore, the inclusion of new feeds and food additives always involves at least a few days of gradual introduction . This also applies to going out to pasture in the spring. A sudden change in diet can cause life-threatening colic, protein disorders or laminitis .

• Access to fresh water: in the stable, on the paddock, on the pasture, in winter and in summer

• High quality feed: in addition to purely nutritional considerations relating to nutraceutical values, a balanced composition and energy value of the feed, the key to a horse’s health is good quality feed - based on natural ingredients, free of dust, mold and toxins .

• Awareness and knowledge about supplements - their purpose, consequences and limitations, with particular regard to the amount of selenium administered or the correct ratio of antagonistic elements (e .g . calcium with phosphorus, copper with zinc) .

• Adjusting the amount of the ration and its energy value to the type and manner of using the horse, his work intensity, condition and health .

• Appreciating the role and importance of veterinarians and trained nutritionists: their experience and knowledge can not only shield your horse from ailments and illnesses, but also help avoid unnecessary expenses, provided that their approach to nutrition recognizes the importance of prevention .

The basic rules and recommendation outlined above are the outcome of a combination of scientific research and the wisdom passed down by generations of horse breeders and lovers . While there are at present no simple and reliable algorithms to guarantee horse longevity and health alongside optimal condition and form, there are several ways to increase our chances of success . First and foremost, it is important to avoid the most common mistakes, especially as regards topics on which research is readily available and knowledge abundant . For the most part, this will suffice to ensure that your horses will enjoy good health and condition for many years to come .

JACK – adult dry dog food

Aside from our beloved equines, the dog is the equestrian’s most constant companion. Dogs have long enjoyed a connection with stables . Spotted at many horse barns, show grounds and homes of equestrians, many riders keep a smaller four-legged friend nearby . While barn dogs come in all shapes and sizes, over the years certain breeds have become more associated with horses than others . One such breed is the Terrier group, made up of small, wiry dogs that were bred to hunt . Chief among them is the feisty and energetic Jack Russell Terrier and it is in his honour that we named our first dry dog food – JACK .

Our JACK product is a well-balanced dry dog food that meets the high energy and protein requirements of terriers . Like most of our dry formulations, it contains the unique and innovative additive, Yarrowia lipolytica yeast, high in Omega-3 fatty acids, a complete range of exogenous amino acids and several bioactive substances beneficial for the musculoskeletal system .

Horse companion dogs tend to be vital and energetic and this has direct implications for their nutrition requirements . Our formulation is rich with prebiotic, fatty yeasts of the Yarrowia lipolytica strain, which in addition to the benefits mentioned above has a positive impact on the digestive system . This is extremely important as barn dogs frequently come into contact with horse feed (of which they are glad to partake), drugs and deworming preparations for horses (the dosage and concentration of which can be harmful to their health), leftovers from trimming hooves (large pieces of which, if swallowed, can result in gastrointestinal irritation or choking), sand, dust and horse droppings .
