1.1 School

1.2 University studies

Teacher training

Pädagogische Hochschule Rheinland at Cologne, Germany (teacher training college) (1976 - 1979), graduated with the 1st state examination for Secondary Level I teaching in German and Sports. Thesis on hermeneutic approaches of the present and their meaning for educational science. Passed with distinction.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Cologne (1982 - 1984), graduated with the 1st state examination for Secondary Level II teaching in Philosophy and German. PhD studies at the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Cologne (1985 - 1990), majoring in Philosophy with minors in German and Education; dissertation: magna cum laude, viva voce: summa cum laude. Topic of dissertation: Linguistic Reflection and Transcendental Philosophy (published by Königshausen & Neumann, Würzburg 1991). The dissertation gained the University of Cologne’s second prize in 1992.

Post-doctoral qualification

Postdoctoral qualification at the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Cologne on 10 December 1997 when he was conferred the Venia Legendi for Philosophy. Title of post-doctoral thesis: Discourse Ethics – Discourse Anthropology – Discourse Education. Subject of the colloquium: Ernst Cassirer‘s Philosophy of Symbolic Forms. Criticism of Knowledge or of Culture?

1.3 Teaching

From September 1980 until July 1983 part-time student teacher (12 hours per week).

From the winter semester of 1984/85 up to and including the summer semester of 1995 continuous teaching assignments (8 hours per week and semester) in the Social Sciences department at the Preparatory College at Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Developed the mandatory German curriculum for social sciences applicable to the preparatory colleges at universities of applied sciences.

From winter semester 1993, teaching activities in philosophy at the Faculty of Human Sciences at the University of Cologne as well as at the Philosophy Seminar organized by the Department for Practical Philosophy/Ethics at Freie Universität Berlin. Teaching focus: classic and modern positions in practical philosophy/ethics, philosophic anthropology, theory of science as well as philosophy of education.

1.4 Research focus

Practical philosophy/ethics; general theory of science; transcendental philosophy; philosophy of language; philosophical anthropology; philosophical basics in education, taking account of special education issues.

Interdisciplinary research with colleagues from various departments at both German and international universities, particularly with a view to the basics and the applications of philosophic anthropology and moral philosophy as well as the theory of science in humanities and social sciences, philosophy of education.

Interdisciplinary colloquiums on the core education curriculum for future teachers and Master’s Degree in education.

1.5 International cooperation

Japan: Hokkaido University, Sapporo; Kansai University, Osaka. Cooperation in teaching and research dealing with practical philosophy/ethics and philosophical anthropology (philosophy of education, medical ethics, ethics of responsibility). These relationships led to regular visiting professorships as well as the joint promotion of young talent (since 2001). Additional information can be found under „Research groups“.

Switzerland: University of St. Gallen; Institute for Economic Ethics. Joint teaching projects on questions of the ethics of responsibility and discourse ethics as well as joint Ph.D. projects (since 1998).

China: Beida. University of Beijing. Cooperation with the chair for Modern Western Philosophy (College of Xiping). Joint Ph.D. student currently working at Cologne (cooperation since 2004).

1.6 Promotion of young academics (postgraduates)

Has worked since 1995 to promote Ph.D. students at international universities. Currently eight Ph.D. students are working on theses in curative education and rehabilitation sciences (specific field: anthropology and ethics in curative education, taking special account of people with disabilities).
