I t’s the call no fleet operator wants to get. One of your trucks is out on a job with several stops still ahead on a

tight schedule. Then the driver contacts you—the truck’s battery is dead. Your truck and driver are now stranded, and you’re faced with an expensive service call. You pick up the phone to make another call, this time to your team who will have to pick up the slack.

EFFECTS OF BATTERY FAILUREBatteries are a weak link in many trucking operations. These batteries are often charged by the truck’s alternator when the vehicle is driving or idling. In delivery applications, batteries drain quickly if there is not enough drive time between stops. W ith a fleet to manage and a bottom line to beat, you don’t always have time to

research industry regulation like the recent updates to the CK-4 and FA-4 categories. Luckily, Kendall® Motor Oil does. Kendall’s engineers are always working hard to develop formulations that don’t just meet the latest industry standards but exceed them in both performance and protection.

Now Kendall has added its most advanced diesel engine oils yet to its proven heavy-duty product portfolio. KENDALL SHP EURO DIESEL ENGINE OILThis diesel engine oil meets API CK-4 performance requirements for use in modern low-emission engines from 2007 and later which follow EPA on-highway exhaust emissions standards. It’s also backward serviceable to be used in older diesel engines if needed. The Kendall SHP Euro Diesel Engine oil meets a number of other OEM specifications including ACEA E6, MB 228.51, CES 20086, and DFS 93K222.

This special formulation allows for compatibility with exhaust after-treatment systems using diesel particulate filters (DPF), diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), and/or selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Better performance in harsh winter climates is possible with a full-synthetic formulation and SAE 5W-30 viscosity providing excellent low-temperature properties. To top off the list of benefits, fleets that use CK-4 Kendall SHP Euro 5W-30 saw up to a 1.5 percent fuel economy benefit.

PPGA WORKHORSE PAINT SYSTEM WITH WORK TRUCKS IN MIND

C hoosing the right paint system for today’s work trucks is an important decision. Not only must

it meet requirements for appearance and durability to stand up to work demands in extreme conditions, but cost is also an important consideration. Meeting and exceeding these requirements was what PPG had in mind in developing the Delfleet Essential® paint system.

“The Delfleet Essential product portfolio was designed to be a simple-to-manage, economical, yet fully functional paint solution,” says J.J. Wirth, PPG brand manager, fleet segment. “Our single-stage system, best suited for solid and metallic colors, is not only easy to mix and spray, it delivers a glossy, durable finish with excellent throughput performance. It requires only a minimal inventory to deliver quality with thousands of color options. For added convenience, pre-mixed

colors are available in white, black, and flat black.”

The system also includes a basecoat option for increased color and finish options, while maintaining efficiency at an economical price. Transport Finishes, a truck refurbisher in Hazel Crest, Illinois, takes advantage of both the single-stage and basecoat options: “I mostly use the Essential single-stage. But, I use the basecoat/clear on occasion, and it looks great,” explains owner, Dave Letts. “It’s very difficult to distinguish it from the higher-priced premium systems out there.”

Dangelo’s Custom Built Manufacturing in Kane, Pennsylvania, builds heavy-duty tow trucks and finds PPG’s paint system ideal for its operation. “There are a number of reasons why Delfleet Essential single-stage is the perfect paint for our needs, but adhesion, appearance, and durability are at the top of the list,” explains owner Derek Dangelo. “I look

at wreckers we built six or seven years ago, and they still look brand-new.”
