Forchildrenwholivewithadisability,theirbedisnotjustaplacetosleep.Manyofthesechildrenspendmuchoftheirtimeinbedduringthedayaswell.Forthisreasonsuchachildcarebedhastobedesigneddifferentlyfromanormalchild‘sbed.

Formorethan30years,wehavebeenma-nufacturinginnovativechildcarebeds,whichsimplifythedailycareathomeandinthehospital.ItgoeswithoutsayingthatKayser-Bettenmeetalltherelevantstandardsandthestringentcriteriaoftheauxiliaryaids.Weclaimtobeabletomanufactureaspecialbedthatsuitseveryindication:Regardlessofwhetherabuilt-inbedtofitaslopingceiling,specialpaddingorsidefurnituremadeofthematchingbeechwoodarerequired.

Inaddition,specialbedsarealsooftensubjecttoheavyusageandhenceneedtobeextremelyrobust-andfromourexperienceweknowhowtobuildreallyrobustspecialbeds.Theheightadjustabilityofthesleepingplat-formandtheadjustabilityofthelyingsurfaceusinganelectricmotorareveryimportantfeaturesofchildcarebeds.Bothfeaturessimplifythedailycareandconsiderablyeasethestrainonthenurse‘sback.

Especiallyhighsideframesarenecessaryifthereisariskofthechildinjuringitself.Wemanufacturebedswithadoorheightofupto170cmandcustom-modelsinanysize.Accessnearthefloorlevelhelpschildrentodevelopandimprovetheirmobilityskills.Thisenablesthemtoclimbinandoutinde-pendently.

What are child care beds?

Itisabeddesignedspeciallywithdifferentfittingoptionswhichtheuserneedstopartlycompen-satehisdisability.Thesemayincludehighbedsideaswellasalowaccess.Theelectricallyadjustablesleepingplatform,apaddedinteriororanexternaldoorlockingsystemareoftennecessarytocompen-satethechild‘sphysio-functionaldeficiencies,topreventphysicalinjuriesandtomakenursingconsiderablyeasier.Achildcarebedmadeforchildrenwithspecialneedsisnotastandardeverydayproduct.Ithasspecialfittingswhicharesignificantlydifferentfromthatofa„normal“bed.Becauseofthesespecialfeatures,itisnotusedbyhealthychildren.

ChildcarebedsaredesignedaccordingtothestandardDINEN60601-2-52,butalsocomplywiththeDIN32623andDINEN716standards.Thesegiveevenhigherprioritytosecuritycom-paredtostandardcarebedsandtheyestablishbindingmeasuresforbarspacing,railingheight,andgaps.

When is a child care bed needed?

Theaffectedchildshouldhaveadisabilitywhichpreventshimfromcarryingoutnormalactivitiesinlifeasdefinedunderthegeneralprinciples.

Providingachildcarebedmaybeconsiderediftheoff-the-shelfbedscommonlyusedinhomescannotbeusedbyachildwithspecialneeds(noorverylowsiderails,highaccess,noadjustmentoptions).Ifthechildcarebedissuitableforcompensatingthedisabilityoftheconcernedchildandachea-perorequivalentbedisnotavailableandcost/benefitratioisreasonable,thenthestatuto-ryhealthinsurancecompanyisobligedtosupplyachildcarebedforchildrenwithspecialneeds.

What should you do to obtain a child care bed?

Getyouchildexaminedbytheattendingdoctorfirsttodetermineifaspecialchildcarebedisreallyneeded.Ifthatisthecase,thenthephy-sicianwritesaprescriptiononwhichhemakesanoteofthespecialfeaturesthatthechildcarebedshouldhave,i.e.theminimumheightoftherails,heightadjustabilityofthesleepingplatform,paddedinterioretc.

Themorepreciselythedoctorformulatestherequirements,thelessarethechancesofmisun-derstandingslater.

Youcannowgotoamedicalshopwiththeprescriptionandaskforalocalconsultation.Incaseitisapproved,thechildcarebedissup-pliedandinstalledbythemedicalshop.Thismedicalshopwillalwaysbeyoursupplypart-ner.Inordertosupplytheoptimalbed,pleasecheckwhichchildcarebedandaccessoriesarerequiredconsideringthelong-termuseofthebed(bedsize)andifpossibleinthepresenceofyourchild.Thereshouldnotbeanyroomformis-takeswithproperplanning.Therefore,pleasealsoconsiderthepossibleoptionsforeachKayserBett,fore.g.whetherPlexiglasontherailscouldbenecessaryforsafetyreasons,whetherdetachablepostsareimportantfortherapyincaseoftheTIMMYseriesofchildcarebeds,whetheraspecialsleepingplatformisnecessaryorthede-signhastobemodifiedfortherapeuticreasons.YouaremostwelcometodiscussthesedetailswithusdirectlybecauseourforemosttaskistoprovideyouwithaperfectKayserBett.

Onceeverythingisclarified,themedicalshoppreparesacostestimatewhichissubmittedtoyourinsurancecompanyforapproval.

Theperceptionofdepth,proprioception,ofthechildrenisstimulatedwhenchildrencanmovearoundsufficientlyintheirbed.Thisisessentialforthedevelopmentofthebrainandthefacili-tationofthenerveendings.Butthisispreciselywherechildrenwithspecialneedsfacecertainproblems.

Ahealthychildcanusuallyjudgehisownmotorskillsprettywellfromthetoddlerageonwards,whichmeansthatusuallytherearenoaccidentswhentheyjumparoundinthebed-thechilddoesnotfalloutanddoesnotgetentangledintherails.Achildcarebedisalwayssomethingspecial.Incaseofchildrenwithspecialneeds,notonlythemotorskillsmayberestrictedbutspasticattacksandseizuresmakeitimpossibleforthechildrentomakespecificmovements.Thisincreasestheriskofinjury.

Thereforeitisnecessaryforachildcarebedtomeetthesespecialrequirements.Forthispurpose,thesiderailsofthebedshouldbe

availableindifferentheightsandmodels(railsorPlexiglaspanels)tomeettheindividualneedsandcapabilitiesofthechild.Thequestionofsafetyisalwaysimportantforchildcarebeds.Themedicalproductsactgovernsthedesignaccordingtothestandard.Themanufacturer‘scommitmentisneededtoensuregoodstabilityandoperationalreliabilityduringdailyuseovermanyyears.Tryingtosavemoney,forexamp-le,whilecalculatingthedimensionsofthewoodisdefinitelythewrongapproach.

Toensurethatourkidsdonothavetocopewithallergies,naturalmaterialsshouldalwaysbepreferredoversyntheticproductsinproductionasfaraspossible.Solidbeechwood,coatedwithsweatandsaliva-resistantpaints,feelsverysoftandcorrespondstothephysiologicalsensationofourchildren.Smoothly-finishedrodscanhelpthechild‘seffortstogripandwalk.Thislittleexcursionintotheworldofchildrenshowsquiteclearlythat:onecannotsimplyclassifyabedasaplacetosleep.Itismuchmoreaplaceforfantasieswhereyoufeelsecure.

Thisisthesameforchildrenwithspecialneedsasforallotherchildren.Themaindifferenceisthatmanyofthesechildrenhavetroublefallingasleepandsleepingthroughthenight.Itisnotunusualforthemtotakealongtimetofallasleep.Oftenparentsneedtotakethetimetolienexttotheirchildtillitfallsasleep.Wakingupfrequentlyduringthenightisalsonotunusualforthesechildren.Unfortunatelyfortheparents,theyoftendonotgobacktosleepbythemselveswhichmeansthattheparentsneedtoattendtotheirchildrenonceagain.

Somechildrenneedextracareduringthenight,eithertohavetheirdiaperschangedorforthechildtoberepositioned.Thismeansthateverynighttheparentsandtheirchildrenspendalotoftimetogetherinandaroundthebed.Areasona-blesize,toallowroomfortherapiesorforjustspendingtimeinbed,isimportanthere.Insomecasesoversizedbedsarenecessary.Thechildcarebedisoffargreaterimportancethanisthecaseforchildrenwithoutdisabilities.

Itisclearthatachildcarebedhastomeetentirelydifferentrequirementscomparedtothatofa„standardbedforchildren“.ltisnotonlyusedbythechildtosleepbutalsobytheparentsasasupportfortheirnursingactivities.Ifachildsuffersfromsleeplessnessandcannotfallasleepbyitself,thebedshouldsometimesevenprovidespaceforaparenttosleep.

Thechildcarebedisfrequentlyalsousedinadifferentcontext-manytherapistsusethebedasatherapybed.Thechildcarebedshouldbedesignedsuchthatitallowthechildexactlyasmuchfreedomofmovementasthechildisabletomakeuseof.
