There is nothing new in companies buying other companies; it’s been
going on since the concept of business was first developed. And there
has been a rash of acquisitions of late in the electronics industry. In
March, NXP announced its merger – an acquisition in all but name – with
Freescale. Microchip is buying Micrel, Cypress has acquired Spansion and
is trying to do deal to buy ISSI. Distributor Arrow Electronics has made a
couple of deals and is expected to make further moves shortly. ARM
bought a couple of companies. And so it goes on.
Why these acquisitions take place is an interesting question. At its most
brutal, acquisition of a competitor boosts market share at a stroke. But
many of the recent electronics deals seem to have been done for other
reasons; mainly to broaden portfolios.
Despite being big players, NXP and Freescale’s portfolios don’t overlap
too much. But the two have one thing in common: they target the
automotive sector. Cypress and Spansion, meanwhile, have
complementary memory technologies. Microchip says Micrel’s technology
will complement its initiatives in a range of markets. And so on.
But what about the customer? While it might streamline the purchasing
process, what is the impact on design engineers? On one hand, a
company becomes more of a ‘one stop shop’; if you’re designing
automotive electronics, NXP, for example, might now have everything you
need. On the other hand, are you sure that dealing with one company is
prudent?
One thing is certain: ‘acquisition fever’ will continue. The rumours linking
Intel and Altera continue to rumble on and Avago is being tipped as likely
to close a deal in the near future. While it’s probably a good time to be a
shareholder, is it good news for engineers?

Industry 4.0 is ringing in new infrastructure
requirements. What is needed are
compact and reliable industrial
computers, such as those based on the
Pico-ITX form factor, that cannot only be
trusted to perform tasks reliably but that can
also provide Industry 4.0 connectivity.
The conga-PA3 from congatec is a
powerful, low-power single board computer
(SBC) with embedded qualities that is based
on Intel Atom E3800 processor technology.
The compact Pico-ITX design with a footprint
of 70 x102mm makes the SBC highly
versatile. Real-time capability and support
for multiple operating systems allow use in
demanding industrial applications. The Intel
Atom E3800 processors are also suitable for
use in the extended industrial temperature
range. Thanks to their low power
consumption with just 5 to 10 Watt TDP, the
single-chip Bay Trail solutions are ideal for
passively cooled and enclosed systems.
When high-performance graphics with
extensive 3-D capabilities are not required,
and when two independent displays with full
HD resolution are sufficient, the Pico-ITX
SBC is both reliable and cost effective.
The widespread and highly compact
Pico-ITX form factor enables high volumes at
low prices and is suitable for 24/7 operation
in harsh environments.
The conga-PA3 comes in two
configurations: A dual-core Intel Atom E3826
and a quad-core Intel Atom E3845. Both
processors are from Intel’s 64 bit Bay Trail
family and are full System-on-Chips (SoCs)
characterized by high efficiency and an
excellent price/performance ratio. Additional
CPUs can easily be implemented as tailored
products.
The integrated Intel Gen7 HD graphics
supports two independent displays in Full
HD resolution (LVDS 2x24bit
via an internal connector and
DP++; and HDMI1.4 via a
connector on the I/O panel).
The hardware supports or
directly accelerates DirectX
11.1, OpenGL 3.2 and
OpenCL 1.2. The RAM
memory is soldered to the
board. Depending on the
processor, a total of up to
4GB DDR3L-1666 are
available. The I/O panel
further provides two USB2.0
ports, an RJ-45 connector for
10/100/1000 GB Ethernet,
plus a 12V DC power supply.
Also integrated are an additional USB 2.0
port, a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed port, a
connector for backlight and LVDS, fan
control, HDA audio, two serial ports (RS232,
RS232/485/422), a SATA connection, a half-
size slot for shared mSATA/miniPCIe, plus
another half-size miniPCIe slot.
Various interfaces including ACPI 5.0,
I2C bus and LPC bus allow easy integration
of legacy I/O interfaces via the feature
connector. Real-time clock (RTC) and Intel
High Definition Audio complete the feature
set.

Ahuge shift in the capabilities of mobile
computing devices requires a new
power analysis flow methodology and
Veloce Power Application software lets chip
designers identify power concerns while
running system level-tests, and then capture
detailed information for focused power
analysis.
The Veloce Activity Plot allows a power
analysis team to run long test sequences
and quickly isolate high switching regions
over long emulation runs, representing
actual power concerns. This enables
users to run real software applications,
identify areas of interest when it comes
to power and then narrow down those
application/logic blocks causing peak
switching. An Activity Plot can be
created in minutes compared to the
days it previously took to create a file-
based power chart.
Once high switching activity regions
are identified, various sub-blocks or
applications can be analyzed to
determine the main source of high
switching. This time zone information can be
captured in a tzf (Time Zone File) file and
inputted into Veloce for detailed analysis.
The Dynamic Read Waveform API enables
accurate power calculation at the system
level, where booting an OS and running
software applications is required making it
practical to explore power exploration at RTL
for power budgeting and tradeoffs, as well
as more accurate power analysis and signoff
at the gate level in a targeted application
environment. The dynamic API-based live
streaming exchange of switching data
between emulation and power analysis tools
allows for all the operations to be run in
parallel. Not only is it faster but it also
delivers improved accuracy compared to
SAIF based average flows as conditional
controls are incorporated automatically for
switching. The Dynamic Read Waveform API
enables the power analysis and exploration
possible at SoC level with long tests and
scenarios that are not possible with a file-
based flow
By eliminating a file-based flow and
providing the unique Dynamic Read
Waveform API integration with power
analysis tools, Veloce offers a complete RTL
power exploration and accurate gate level
power analysis flow. Design and verification
teams can start work earlier, allowing them to
do power tradeoffs and make architectural
adjustments far upstream in the design
cycle. Then they can continue to use the flow
as the design gets frozen and gate-level
representations are prepared. At that point,
users can focus on more accurate power
measurements and do additional fine tuning
before tapeout and power signoff.

Pushing the envelope in design is not
enough if you always push it the same
way – you must create something
radically different. Which is precisely what
OKW has done with its award-winning new
SYNERGY enclosures – its fifth range to win
the coveted iF Product Design Award (its
second iF Award in two years).
SYNERGY is a range of 36 superbly
finished enclosures aimed at high value
desktop, handheld and wall mounted
electronics. Applications include medical
and therapeutic systems, measurement and
control technology, home automation,
peripherals and building services
electronics.
OKW has combined two important
innovations to create SYNERGY.
Innovation number one is to build the
enclosures from ASA+PC-FR plastic (for high
flame resistance and very good UV
protection) and aluminium. But not just any
aluminium – we’re talking AIMgSi 0.5
aluminium that has been blasted with glass
beads and anodised in silver (or black on
request) to create an ultra-high quality finish.
All the anodising is done by a specialist
company which works for German
manufacturers of high end TV and home
entertainment systems.
Innovation number two is SYNERGY’s
connector-based construction system – a
smart system that conceals all the fixings.
Each SYNERGY enclosure uses four
fibreglass-reinforced polyamide connectors.
They snap into the recessed top plastic
panel, locate the aluminium assembly
extrusion and are fixed to the bottom part
with four stainless steel Torx T10 anti-tamper
screws. Aside from the aesthetic and
security benefits, the system also enables
several pillars to be snapped together to
create custom heights in 5 mm increments
(on request).
Combining these two innovations would
have been enough for some
manufacturers – but not OKW.
Instead of launching
SYNERGY in one format,
OKW unveiled its newest
enclosures in four formats:
Round, Square, Oval and
Edge (rectangular).
Round and Square models
are offered in three plan sizes:
100 mm x 100 mm; 120 mm x
120 mm; 140 mm x 140 mm,
all in heights of 40, 70 or 100
mm.
Oval and Edge models are
also available in three plan sizes: 160 mm x
80 mm; 180 mm x 90 mm; 200 mm x 100
mm, all in 40, 70 or 100 mm heights.
Options and accessories include battery
compartments for two, three or four 1.5V AA
cells, an extender kit for the PCB pillars, and
a wall suspension kit (SYNERGY can be wall
mounted with only one screw).
Customisation services include CNC
milling and drilling, digital printing or
engraving of legends and logos, EMC
shielding for the plastic parts, keypads and
assembly.

METZ CONNECT has developed a
safe and simple single pole spring
clamp terminal block specifically
aimed at compact and low profile devices,
and which meet today’s Safety, Reliability, &
Convenience requirements perfectly.
Space optimisation on printed circuit
boards is becoming more and more critical
during the design process as the demand
for smaller, lower profile devices increases.
As a single pole connector solution and
also its compact size, SM/SR99 allows
design engineers to take a flexible
approach to connector placement on a
PCB with the very limited space that is
often available to them. At just 6.6mm in
height and 5.8mm wide SM/SR99 carries a
very small PCB footprint and can be
placed on the circuit board in any number
of orientations. For this innovation by METZ
CONNECT, developers focused on the
following market needs: integration,
migration, miniaturisation and reliability.
For such a compact connector, the
SM/SR99 is feature rich. Accepting solid
core and stranded cables 0.2sqmm –
1.5sqmm and rated up to 9A, SM/SR99
features a unique finger operated actuator
that not only allows for quick and easy
wiring but also enables the operator to
make multiple connect and disconnect
cycles should they require. Once the cable
is inserted, the operator will find an
inspection window on the top side of the
housing and a quick visual check can be
made.
Next to the inspection window the
operator will then find a continuity test point
to ensure that a quick, safe, and reliable
connection has been made. SM99/SR99,
is also offered with different colour
actuators for additional colour coding
benefits.
The single spring clamp terminal blocks
in SMT and THR versions are available in

Circuit breaker for PCB mounting
CIR

The T9 series circuit breaker family has
been expaned with the introduction of
Model T9-818 for PCB mounting. The
device, which fills a gap in SCHURTER’s T9
product line and in the market, features
dimensions comparable with those of
traditional fuse holders and is intended for
direct placement on circuit boards.
SCHURTER’s existing T9 series features
quick connect terminal types for front and
rear snap in panel mounting, as well as
thread neck mounting.
As with all PCB mounted components,
assembly costs are considerably lower
because fewer materials are used and wires
are eliminated to fully automate assembly. In
addition, the T9-818 is more compact than
quick connect terminal types and thus
requires less space. Furthermore, its slim
design means the reset button protrudes
only minimally from the front panel. Two
mounting pins provide additional mechanical
support on the circuit board and protect the
solder connections from additional
pressure when the reset button is
activated.
The shape of the T9 circuit
breaker is similar to that of a fuse
holder and thus offers an excellent
alternative to 5x20 fuses and their
respective fuseholders, where
current surges can lead to
premature tripping and aging over
time. In contrast, circuit breakers
prevent unnecessary down time, by
eliminating the need for changing
fuses, as well as the associated risk
of inadvertently inserting a fuse with
the incorrect current rating, which
may lead to equipment damage.
A further advantage of circuit
breakers is the reset button, which
springs out to indicate when the
device trips. Reset is achieved by a
simple push of the button.
Typical application areas for circuit
breakers include power supplies, UPS
systems, PDUs, electric tools, industrial
applications, medical diagnostic equipment,
analysis systems, lighting fixtures and HVAC
products, as well as equipment for sports
and leisure activities.
The T9 product line is approved by UL,
VDE and CCC.
SCHURTER’s T9 fuseholder style circuit breaker series now includes a
model for PCB mounting.

Review Display Systems (RDS)
recently introduced Fujitsu’s new Mini-
ITX mainboard based on the latest
AMD Embedded G-Series SoC (System-on-
Chip) platform.
Designated D3313-S, the board has
been optimised for a wide range of
industrial, medical and semi-industrial
applications, having been designed to
provide continuous 24/7 operation in an
extended temperature range of 0 to 60°C.
With a production life of at least five years,
the board is ideal for applications requiring
any product approvals such as Weights and
Measures or FDA approval.
Three different AMD embedded G-Series
SoC processor options make it possible to
offer designers the optimum solution for their
specific requirements:
• Featuring impressive graphic
performance, the D3313-S3 uses the GX-
420CA SoC Quad-core APU (Advanced
Processing Unit) with the powerful
integrated Radeon HD8210E graphics core.
Clocked at 2.0GHz, the unit’s maximum TDP
(Thermal Design Power) is only 25W,
making this powerful board ideal for
applications requiring a lot of graphics
processing for minimal power usage.
• For less demanding applications, the
D3313-S2 version uses the GX-217GA SoC,
dual-core APU with AMD Radeon HD8280E
graphics. The APU is clocked at 1.65GHz,
with a maximum TDP of 15W.
• Finally, for cost driven, low power
applications, the D3313-S1 uses the GX-
210HA SoC, dual core APU (Advanced
Processing Unit) with AMD Radeon
HD8210E
graphics. APU
clocked at 1.0GHz
with a max TDP of just 9W.
The advantages of the D3313-S series of
mainboards compare very favourably with
the D3003-S – the current Fujitsu Mini-ITX

Microchip’s new 14-member
dsPIC33EP “GS” family of Digital
Signal Controllers (DSCs) delivers
the performance needed to implement more
sophisticated control algorithms at higher
switching frequencies.
These advanced algorithms enable
power supply designs that are more energy
efficient and have better power supply
specifications. Higher switching frequencies
enable the development of physically
smaller power supplies that offer higher
densities and lower costs. Compared with
the previous generation of DSCs, the new
dsPIC33EP “GS” devices provide less than
half the latency, when used in a three-pole
three-zero compensator, and consume up to
80% less power in any application.
The dsPIC33EP “GS” family includes
advanced features such as Live Update
Flash capability, which is especially helpful
for high-availability or ‘always-on’ systems.
Live Update can be used to change the
firmware of an operating power supply,
including the active compensator calculation
code, while maintaining continuous
regulation. Variants from this new digital
power optimised DSC family are available in
the 4 x 4mm UQFN package, so are suited
to space-constrained designs.
Other key features of this family include
up to five 12bit A/D converters with as many
as 22 inputs, providing total throughput of
16Msps with a converter latency of 300ns.
The dsPIC33EP “GS” devices include 12bit
D/A converters for each of the four analogue
comparators, supporting higher-precision
designs. The two on-chip programmable
gain amplifiers can be used for current
sensing and other precision measurements.
Including these advanced analogue
amplifiers on the device reduces the number
of external components required, thereby
saving cost and board space.
These features, combined with high
overall performance, make the dsPIC33EP
“GS” family well suited to a wide range of
applications including: computing and
telecoms AC/DC and DC/DC power
supplies; industrial solar inverters, LED
lighting, HID lighting, battery chargers,
projectors and welders; and automotive LED
and HID headlights and DC/DC converters.
The dsPIC33EP “GS” family is supported
by Microchip’s MPLAB Starter Kit for Digital
Power (DM330017-2), which allows
engineers to explore the devices’
capabilities in popular digital power-
conversion topologies.
Microchip’s new dsPIC33EP “GS” family is optimised for use in
digital power applications.

Recent, high profile network security
issues, such as Heartbleed, have
damaged the commercial reputation of
some manufacturers. Similar issues have
afflicted both open-source and proprietary
software. Even large corporations have been
exposed to major risk by downloading free
security software or by not implementing
basic life-cycle processes used as standard
in other industries. The security of customer
data is much more critical than other areas of
software and should be handled in a way
which demonstrates diligence and care.
HCC provides IPv4 and IPv6 developed
with strong life-cycle evidence that can be
used efficiently in any embedded
environment. With support for an extensive
range of embedded controllers, including
most ARM Cortex based devices, it can be
used to ensure a high-quality, secure device
connection to the Internet of Things.
HCC’s TLS/SSL is a highly optimised
software module designed to provide secure
network communications for embedded
devices. The software is developed using a
rigorous adherence to MISRA C:2004 and is
available with a full MISRA compliance
report as well as a full UML description. The
importance of using a strong development
process and source code control has been
emphasised by a number of high-profile
security problems caused by source code
errors. Network security requires a high
degree of quality and traditional methods of
‘freestyle coding’ and test do not provide
sufficient guarantees of correctness.
Key Features/Benefits
• SSL3.0, TLS1.0/1.1/1.2
• Full certificate management
• All mandatory cipher suites supported:
AES, DES, DSS, EDH, MD5, RSA, SHA
All algorithms are implemented as
individual libraries and, where possible, we
use crypto hardware support provided on
specific microcontrollers.
HCC’s SSL/TLS implementation can be
used as Client or Host and is designed
especially for microcontrollers, ensuring a
low memory footprint, typically around 20kB
ROM / 8kB RAM. Typically it uses a standard
sockets interface and will bring ease of
integration to many embedded applications.
HTTP or FTP Server support is provided for
HTTPS and FTPS implementations or
connection to any other secure client or
server application.
The software is fully specified using IBM
DOORS. For protocol elements the
requirements are mapped directly to their
section in the relevant RFCs to create
traceability. The UML software design has
been derived directly from this specification
and consists of Collaboration diagrams,
Object Model Diagrams, Sequence
Diagrams and Activity diagrams drilling all
the way down to the C code level.

Transforming the futureof power electronics

Sectors such as automotive (inc F1) and
aerospace are already utilising match-
box size 500W-2kW planar
transformers, bespoke designed by Himag
in the UK. Himag’s new 22-layer, 5oz, PCB-
planar transformers are being used by many
world-leading automotive manufacturers. A
typical 1kW planar transformer offers >99%
efficiency, weighing 113g in dimensions of
62mm x 40mm x 15mm.
Himag continues to design and
manufacture its 2kW-50kW range of planar
transformers in the UK, and has recently
expanded its facility in China to include this
power range for larger volume customers, in
addition to the <2kW products it has been
supplying out of China since 2008.
Himag provides a full-cycle service,
bespoke-design through to volume
manufacture, of high-frequency magnetics
(planar and conventional). Planar
transformers can be used as a direct
replacement for conventional wire-wound
transformers in high-frequency power
electronics applications, with typical
switching frequencies of 20kHz – 1MHz.
Typically a planar
transformer is >99%
efficient, and around
30% of the volume and
weight of its conventional
wire-wound equivalent.
Planar transformers
are important to the
future of any electronic
product requiring a high
frequency switch mode
power supply. The main
advantages of planar
transformers over their
conventional counterparts are as follows:
• Improved Efficiency
• Low Profile
• Low Weight
• Low Leakage Inductance
• Highly Efficient Cooling
• High Repeatability
• Multiple Topologies
• Dimensional Accuracy
• Multiple Windings Options
After extensive R&D work in 2013, Himag
has now taken its first orders for its new
range of high-power planar transformers
(50kW+): Sectors such as traction, powering
modern-day requirements such as in-seat
charging points on trains, are adopting
Himag’s new planar transformers that offer
up to 120kW in a single-component in a size
smaller than a ream of paper.
The image shows one bespoke-designed
example of a 100kW planar transformer, with
an integrated water-cooled coldplate,
offering an efficiency of >98% with leakage
inductance of <0.01%, weighing <10kg in
dimensions of 360mm x 160mm x 70mm.
Himag expands its planar transformer product range above 50kW to include
planar transformers with a power rating up to 120kW in a single-component.
