Vitec® AntiscalantsSelection Guide

Without some means of upstream scale inhibition, RO membranes and their flow passages willscale up if the solubility limits of sparingly soluble salts is exceeded. Common examples of scaleare calcium carbonate (CaCO3), calcium sulfate (CaSO4), barium sulfate (BaSO4), and strontiumsulfate (SrSO4). Less common but equally problematic are silica (SiO2) and calcium fluoride (CaF)scales.

Avista Technologies provides a range of antiscalants suitable for treating, well, surface, municipaland recycled waters. The Avista Advisor chemical projection programme is provided to assistcustomers in selecting the most appropriate antiscalant for the application and to determine theminimum effective dose rate.

Ancillary Products

In addition to the main product range Avista Technologies offer a small selection of ancillary productswhich may be required for efficient operation of a membrane system. These include chlorine scavenger,a salt rejection improvement aid and a range of product line corrosion inhibitors. For hybrid systems athermal antiscalant is also offered. The products offered are outlined below.

Chlorine Scavenger

Chlorine may be present in the feedwater to membrane plant, either due to the feed being taken from amunicipal supply or because it has been added to reduce biological activity in the pretreatment process.Thin film composite membranes have little tolerance to chlorine and other oxidising agents, andtherefore the chlorine must be de-activated. Anti-Chlor 30 is a 30% solution of Sodium Bisulphitewhich is used as a Chlorine scavenger. The product addition rate may be calculated using AvistaAdvisor 3.

Membrane Sizing Agents

Thin film composite membranes may lose some of their rejection charerecteristics, either through agingor due to oxidation. Liquid and powder resizing agents are available that coat the surface of partiallyoxidised/damaged thin film membranes and improve salt rejection.

Corrosion Inhibitors

The permeate from a reverse osmosis plant may often be corrosive to piping systems, as it will have alow hardness level and a low level of alkalinity. In the case of permeate from a seawater plant, the levelof chloride will be disproportionately high. Corrosion may be prevented by applying a suitableinhibitor. The ViCoat range includes products based on inorganic pyrophosphate, silicates andsilicate/polyphosphate blends.

Thermal Antiscalant

Vitherm 700 is a blended antiscalant developed for use in thermal distillation systems. Low applicationrates of Vitherm 700 are effective at preventing scale and metal oxide precipitates over the full rangeof operating temperatures.

RoCide® Selection GuideNon-Oxidising Biocides

Biological fouling of reverse osmosis membranes is one of the most challenging issues faced byoperators of membrane separation systems. This is primarily due to the fact that effective biocidesmust be non-oxidising in order to avoid permanent damage of the polyamide RO membrane layer.

Avista biocides are available to control these organisms whether it be through continuous dosing,intermittent dosing or periodically via a CIP system. Avista Technologies will provide assistancein selecting and optimizing the most appropriate dosing regime for your system.

Avista Technologies provides two types of biocides for use in reverse osmosis systems, RoCide®

DB20 and RoCide® IS2. Both formulations are non-oxidizing and EPA registered. They are safefor use with both polyamide and cellulose acetate membranes. However, they are not for onlineuse in systems producing potable water. Both have outstanding environmental properties,degrading rapidly and naturally. This property has made them the chemical of choice, especiallyfor systems operating under strict environmental and discharge regulations.

Shock Treatment and RO Cleaning Applications:

RoCide® DB20 or RoCide® DB5 is used as an intermittent feed for “shock treatment” control or itcan be applied as a ‘pre-treat’ cleaning solution to kill bacterial fungi and algae in membranesystems.

Continuous Injection Biocide:

RoCide® IS2 is a broad-spectrum formulation for use against microbiological contaminantscommonly found in RO applications including bacteria, fungi, and algae. RoCide® IS2 is designedfor continuous injection into the RO feed stream to provide constant biological control.

Avista Technologies technical staff are always available to advise on product choice for eachapplication. Cleaning trials can also be carried out in our off-site ‘OSCAR’ facilities or on our cell testequipment to demonstrate effectiveness prior to application on site. Avista Technologies provide a wide range of specially formulated cleaners to tackle all commonmembrane foulants. These foulants include metals, inorganic scales, silt, organics and biologicalmaterial. The table below summarises the application of each product and a more detailed descriptionis given overleaf.

All products are applied as dilute solutions made up with permeate or good quality potable water. Allproducts are readily mixed/dissolved for use. The solutions are optimally applied heated to themaximum temperature and re-circulation rate specified by the membrane type.

Product Approvals

For drinking water applications many of the products have received approvals from the US NationalSanitation Foundation (NSF) under NSF/ANSI Standard 60 and from the Secretary of State (in theUK). Please contact Avista for an up to date list of products which can be applied to drinking watersystems.

To facilitate effluent discharge a number of variations on the products are available for installationswhere EDTA or phosphate cannot be discharged.

RoQuest® CoagulantSelection Guide

Avista Technologies formulates a variety of liquid coagulant/flocculant chemicals under theRoQuest name. RoQuest® 3000 is a blend of organic polymers while the RoQuest® 4000, 5000, and6000 are a blend of organic coagulants and ferric sulfate.

RoQuest formulations change the behaviour of particles and colloids which normally exhibitnegative charges in naturally occurring feed waters. Because like charges repel each other andunlike charges attract each other, the addition of the positively charged RoQuest polymer allowsthe negatively charged particles to clump together. This creates larger particles which are morereadily retained in the multimedia filter (MMF), resulting in improved MMF filtration.

Studies have proven that MMF performance without coagulant addition will removeapproximately 35% – 50% of the feed water particulates. A nominal dosage of a RoQuestcoagulant may allow the MMF to remove up to 98% of the particulates, resulting in improvedeffluent turbidity and reduced SDI values. The resulting improvement in filtrate quality positivelyeffects the downstream filtration equipment including reduced cleaning frequencies and longersystem run times of membrane systems.

Design Support

Design Guidance: During the design phase of your project Avista Technologies will providetechnical support on product selection and dose rate calculation as well as CIP and dosing systemdesign assistance.

Commissioning Support: Avista Technologies are available to attend site to oversee thecommissioning of chemical dosing systems as well as to assist with demonstration CIP operations.

Avista Advice: Training can be provided in all aspects of product selection and application forEquipment Manufacturers or Plant Operators. Training sessions are normally tailored to suit theparticular needs of the individuals concerned.

Operational Support

Data Normalisation is offered to all customers using our suite of chemicals. This data analysisallows us to assist customers in planning plant intervention and optimisation work.

Site Support is available for CIP supervision, chemical dosing setup assistance ortroubleshooting.

OSCAR: Our Offsite cleaning and restoration service is an intensive cleaning proceduredeveloped by Avista Technologies to restore membrane performance.

Autopsy: The physical dissection of an element and analysis of foulants is one of the mostdefinitive troubleshooting tools for membrane systems.

Environmentally SensitiveProduct Selection

Environmentally Friendly Products:

Avista Technologies provide a range of membrane chemicals specifically formulated to meet tightenvironmental discharge constraints.

Antiscalants/Dispersants:

Vitec SR is a biodegradable, low toxicity, low phosphate proprietary liquid antiscalant/dispersantdesigned to inhibit scale and disperse colloidal particles in membrane separation systems. Theformulation has good all round inhibition capabilities at low applied doses.

Cleaners:

RoClean P111C is a high pH, EDTA free, cleaner designed to remove silt and organic foulants such ascolloidal silica, clays, organic colour and is especially suited to removal of bacterial slime from spiralwound thinfilm membranes. This biodegradable product is suitable for marine discharge.

RoClean P303e is a low pH, EDTA free formulation designed to remove metal foulants such as iron,manganese, and aluminium and to remove calcium carbonate scale deposits from spiral wound thinfilmand cellulose acetate membranes.

RoClean L211e is a high pH, low foaming, EDTA free, cleaner formulated to remove silt and organicfoulants such as colloidal silica, clays, organic colour, and bacterial slime from spiral wound thinfilmmembranes.

RoClean L404 is a low pH EDTA free, phosphate free cleaner designed to remove metal hydroxides,calcium carbonate & iron, especially effective when compared to generic formulations. Contains aspecialised blend of buffers, low foaming surfactants, chelants and other components to dissolve metaldeposits.
