Production System

It is defined as the framework consisting of various activities arranged in such a manner that input is on one hand and output is on other hand.

Input and output are linked by various activities or operations.

Continuous Production System

It is a system where same kind of a product is produced on a large scale by using special purpose automatic machines. The product is of standard quality. For example- electrical goods, production of glass and production of sugar.

Characteristic of CPS

1. Volume of Output2. Standardization3. Capacity4. Automation5. Product Layout

Merits Of CPS

(a) Work in process inventory is minimum.(b) Uniform quality of output is produced.(c) Delay at any stage can be automatically

detected.(d) Control over materials ,cost and output is

simplified(e) Work can be done by semi skilled workers

Demerits of CPS(a) Rigidity: Any fault in one operation will disturb the whole

system.(b) Piling of Work : Care should be taken to avoid piling up of the

work or any blockage on the line.(c) Maintenance cost : Maintenance cost is very high .(d) Costly Machines: Special purpose automatic machines are

used which are costly and need maintenance due to which the investment is fairly high.

Types Of CPS

1. Mass Production- It refers to the manufacturing of standardized parts on a large scale.

2.Process Production – It is carried on continuosly through a uniform and standardised sequence of operations.

Process production can be further classified as(i) Analytical Production(ii) Synthetic Production

Intermittent Production System

It is a system where different kinds of produc are produced on a small scale by using general purpose machines which are flexible in nature.

Characteristics of IPS

1. The flow of Production is irregular.2. Volume of output is generally small.3. Wide Variety of products are produced.4. General purpose machines are used which

are flexible in nature.5. Process Layout is suitable.

Types Of IPS

Types of Intermittent Production System:1. Job Production: In this system product are

manufactured to meet the requirements of a specific order. It is useful in tailor shops, cycle and vehicle repair shop and other small work shops.

2. Batch Production: It is the manufacturing of a number of identical product either to meet the specific order or to satisfy demand. It is suitable in readymade garments.
