National Research Development Corporation Technology offer

A Fermentation Process for the Production of Biofertilizer for Yield Improvement of Agricultural Crops

Strains of Rhizobium sps, Azatobacter sps, Azospirillum sps have been developed and

further cultivated under specifically defined physico-chemical conditions in a fermentor at 50-

500L scale. These species of Rhizobium, Azatobacter, Azospirillum are maintained on a

specific solid medium. The overnight grown culture from solid medium is used pre-seed for

raising a seed culture under submerged conditions at 28 ± 1oC in a bioreactor or on a rotary

shaker. The seed culture is then transferred to production medium containing molasses in a

fermentor. The fermentation is carried out at 28 ± 1oC for a maximum period of 48h. At the

end of fermentation the fermentation broth is blended with the carrier material.

Advantages

Very short fermentation batch cycle of 48h makes the process very attractive

No special material of construction is required for fermentation vessels

Results

Carrier based formulations of species of Rhizobium, Azatobacter and Azospirillum have been

successfully tested in different agro climatic conditions as field trial demonstrations.

Rhizobium sps has been tested as seed treatment on Beans, Chickpea & Pea crops and

Azotobacter and Azospirillum sps are tested by both seed and seedling treatment in Brinjal,

knol-khol. Azotobacter and Azospirillum sps are also tested on the rhizomes of Saffron.
