Wheredidtheideaforthefilmoriginate?

The idea for the film originated about 2 years ago from a conversation with Celeste Ntuli aboutdoingamovielooselybasedonherlifeandherjourneytobecomingastand-upcomedian.TherawthoughtswerethenconstitutedintoanoutlinethateventuallywenttoChinakaIwunze,thewriter,whopoundeddraftafterdrafttillwefelt itwassittinginagoodenoughplacetoproceedtowardsbeingdevelopedasafull-lengthfeaturefilm.

Whatisunique/mostentertainingaboutthefilm?

Ithinktheuniquethingaboutthefilmisthatit’s,firstandforemost,anadultcomedy-film,whichwebelieveisafirstforSAcinemas.ItattemptstotellthestoryoftheaverageSouthAfricangirl,whoisdoingherbesttogetbyandhasnochoicebuttodependonherwitstonavigatethecomplexmazeofrelationships,whilealsofiguringoutacareerpath.Traditionally,filmsofthisnaturewillfeatureafemaleleadwithattributesthatsupposedlymakeherstandoutanddesirable,butourcharacterisstrippedbareofthatandcouldeasilybesomeone,whomwewillengagewithonthestreet,withoutgivingitasecondthought.

Whatwereyourthoughtsonreadingthescriptandhowyouwouldinterpretit?

Myfirstthought,onreadingthescript,wasthatitneededtobereallyfunny.So,ifIwasn’tlaughingbythetime Iwentthroughascene, Iwould insist thatthescene ischangedtodeliverthe laughs.Evenonset, if,afterblockingasceneandrehearsingandthecastandcrewwerenotlaughing,wewouldnotshootthescenetillIhavereworkedthescenewiththeactorstocomeupwithgagsthatwillhaveuscrackingourribs.Ourphilosophywas,ifwe,thecastandcrew,don’tlaugh,howdoweexpecttheaudiencetolaugh?

Myjobwastoensurethatwhatisattheheartofthestorygetstranslatedtoscreenandthelaughsandgagsservethestoryratherthandetractfromit.Howdidyougoaboutcasting?

The filmwas a delight towork on and that credit goes to the production team for planning andschedulingourdaysaroundtheusualproductioncomplicationsandheadaches.

Whatwerethemainconsiderationsforyouregardingwardrobeandfashioninthefilm?

Mymain consideration regarding wardrobe in any film is that the wardrobe should support andenhancecharacterisationofthecharactersinthestory.Also,wardrobeshouldhelptellthestory.Inthisfilmspecifically,itwasimportanttomethattheclothesshouldportraythemodernyoungSouthAfricansinourcountrytoday.

Whatkindoflookandfeelwereyouaimingtoachieve?

Seeing that wewere doing a romantic comedy, I tried to source awardrobe that had a fun andcolourfulfeel.It’sastoryaboutyoungmodernpeople,soIwantedthecostumestobefashionableandbeautiful.

Didyouuselocaldesigners?

Our leadactresshasherown localdesignerwhomakescostumes forherwhenshedoesheronewoman shows and has to do appearances. So, we borrowed some of Celeste’s personal clothes,whichweredesignedbyalocaldesigner.Wealsousedlocalcraftsmentomanufacturesomeofthecostumes,headgearandjewellery.

Tellusaboutdressingsomeofthemaincharactersinthefilm.

Well, thehighlight formewasdressing thevery talented, senioractors inour industry, likeLillianDubeandAllenBooi.Theyarebothsuchgraciouspeopleandtrueprofessionals.TheyportrayedthemotherandfatherofBuyi,whoisthemaincharacterinthefilm.Thecharacters,MrandMrsDube,arerespectableandolder.So,wewent forasober,moreconservative look. I lovedthedressMrsDubeworetoherdaughter’swedding.

Buyi, the lead character, playedbyCelesteNtuli, is a beautifulmodern girl.We startedheroff inmoreplainclothesandasthestoryandhercharacterdeveloped,weputherinmorebeautifulandsexierclothes.Inthelastscene,IthinkshelookedabsolutelystunningintheAnkaraone-piecesuit.

Lindi,Buyi’sbestfriend,playedbyPhindileGwala, isverybeautifulandsexy, inappropriatelyso, insomecases,likewhenshegoestochurchinaverysmallandtightgoldendress.Thatsupportedthestoryandcomedyofthescene.

Itwasmyfirsttimeworkingwithactors fromNigeriaand I reallyenjoyed it.Theyaregenerallysobeautifulandstylish.Theyarewellinformedwhenitcomestofashionandstyleandareveryawareof thequalityof clothes. I really appreciate that, but it did sometimesbecomechallenging seeingthatweworkwithlocalbudgets.

Whatdidyouenjoythemostaboutthisprocess?

Iworkedwiththewell-knownandverytalentedwardrobedesignerandownerofWardrobeStudio,NerinePienaar.Ialwaysenjoyworkingwithher,assheisoneofthebestwardrobedesignersinourcountry.Shehasyearsofexperienceandtherearethousandsofcostumesinherstudiotochoosefrom.


I also always loveworkingwith theproduction companyAzaniaManagement,whoproduced thisfilm.It’sagreatcompanywithawonderfulandsupportiveteamandtheyproduceamazingfilms.

Itwasmyfirsttimeworkingwiththedirector,AdzeUgah.Whatapleasure!

ABOUTTHECREW

ADZEUGAH-Director

Adze Ugah is a Nigerian-born filmmaker. His foray into filmmaking began at the National FilmInstitute inJos,Nigeria.HethenmovedtoSouthAfricatofurtherhisstudies,whereheearnedanhonoursdegreeat the the SouthAfrican SchoolofMotionPictureMediumand LivePerformance(AFDA),withamajorinscriptwritinganddirecting.

His earlywork experiences in the SA film and television industry include serving as 2nd assistantdirector in theearly seasonsof theSABC1 televisiondramaseries,HomeAffairs, and the featurefilm series,Heart lines.He thenwenton to serve as 1st assistantdirectoronother SouthAfricantelevision shows such as City’Sesla. He has since featured as one of several directors on othertelevisiondramaseriessuchasSociety,Zone14andJacob’sCross,andisoneofthemostacclaimedtelevisiondirectorsinSouthAfrica.

Adze has one documentary to his credit, themulti-award winning BurningMan, and is currentlyinvolvedinvariousstagesofproductionoffilm,documentaryandtelevisionprojects.Hewroteanddirected the acclaimed local feature,Gog’Helen, which has received high praise from critics andaudiences alike. Adze then directedMrs. Right Guy. He served as the head director on MzansiMagic’smassivelypopulartelenovela,Isibaya.

Writer and content developer, Chinaka Iwunze is an MFA film graduate from the University ofCalifornia,LosAngeles(UCLA),whereshefocusedonscreenwritingandproducing.Shealsoholdsamaster’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Westminster, in London, aftergraduatingwithabachelor’sdegreefromRhodesUniversity.ChinakaIwunzeistherecipientofthe2014 Jack Nicholson Award for Screenwriting as well as the recipient of the 2015 Ron BahamMemorialFellowshipinComedy.

SheiscurrentlyawritingteammemberonMuvhangobyDumaKaNdlovu,KeepingScorebyThandiBrewerandFiftytheSeriesforEbonyLifeTV(developedunderBornFreeMedia)

Chinaka recently worked as Digital Content Creator for the singing competition show, The VoiceNigeria. Chinaka worked for a year at Barry Films, an internationally active production companybased in Los Angeles, Berlin and Zurich. In 2011, Chinakawas head ofmarketing for a four-weekfilmmaking programme, held in Lagos, with the New York Film Academy. She also worked as anOnlineEditoratDSTVaswellasbeingDigitalContentCreatorforthesingingrealityshow,TheVoiceNigeria. While at UCLA, Chinaka taught screenwriting to undergraduate students. She bringsoriginality, hardwork and fun to anyproject she is involved in. She is currently amember of theWriter’sGuildofSouthAfrica.

NONTANDOMYEZA–ArtDirector

Nontando holds a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Set Design and Directing, from the University ofKwaZulu-Natal.

Her televisioncredits includeZabalaza, seasons2and3,andGold-diggers,aswellascommercialsforaJohannesburg-basedcompany,theMovingBillboardPictureCompany,finessingherstyleandvoiceasanartdirector.

LookingforLovepresentedNontandowiththeopportunitytoreallyshowherflair,withitsdistinctcolour palette and outrageous characters. The sets gave her an opportunity to play withunconventionalelements,whilesolvingproblemsandpatientlyattendingtothedirector'sneeds.

William Collinson is a South African cinematographer and directorwho, at age 30,made his filmdirectorialdebutwithDoubleEcho,writtenbyFrançoisBloemhof (released in2017), forwhichheexecutedthedualrolesofdirectorandDOP.
