Managing Calves in Cold WeatherProtect Your Calves from Winter ChillWith cold weather upon most of us it’s time to implement your calf management strategy to minimize cold weather stress.Ensuring plenty of dry bedding is available for the calf to nestle into along with a calf jacket for warmth plus increasing the caloric density of milk replacer are key during the cold weather months. For all calves, energy needs increase in cold weather. The bottom thermoneutral zone for calves less than three weeks of age is 60ºF. Below 60ºF, young calves must use body stores of energy to maintain their body temperature if they don’t consume enough energy in their diet. Hair removal is a vital process to improve udder cleanli-ness, reduce bacteria and make udder prep easier in the parlor. The fastest way to remove udder hair is to singe the udder on a regular basis. This process is easy and can save time in prepping cows by helping keep the ud-ders cleaner.

Process of Singeing Udder Hair:1. Remove any organic bedding from the udder that might catch on fi re in the process. 2. Pass the wand under the udder about 2-4” from the udder fl oor. 3. Have cotton rag or glove on so you can put out any hot spots or rub off the hair. 4. Move quickly from cow to cow in the parlor.

Develop a schedule for hair removal. Flaming uddersshould reduce long hair from getting in the teat cups,reduce bacterial contamination, improve udder preptime and quality, and is a humane way to reduce hairon the udder.
