In his Maui loft, Kai dedicates himself to sail design as well as other "playgrounds". Besides his legendary fin designs, Kai’s saildesign programs are used to update the McSail design software, which is used by all sail designers of all major sail brandsnowadays. This software allows a much more accurate and faster development of new sail profiles and generates theimportant data for mass production. Kai’s computer programs help guarantee all NORTH SAILS have accurate shapes whichequals improved performance. For 2005 Kai Hopf has put his focus on the Race and Freeride sails. The new range featurescompletely new ideas and designs, where Kai transfers innovations from the race-development into the Freeride sails. In com-bination with his enormous experience in aerodynamics Kai creates unique sails, which combine enormous power with precisecontrol and excellent handling.

Now you need just half the number of masts for your quiver!Kai's greatest revolution for 2005 is the brand-new MINIMUM.MAST.CONCEPT. The idea is to need only half as many masts foryour quiver of sails as you needed in the past. Using less masts not only saves you lots of money but also the hassle of storingand transporting a large quiver of masts. The core of this concept is the brand-new CARBON.EXTENDER. An ultra-lightweightextension, which extends all masts by 50 cm without any influence on the bend curve or sail performance. Therefore all 2005NORTH SAILS sail lines can now be used with a maximum of 2 masts. Of course the classic mast extensions remain fully com-patible.

Kai Hopf, one of the most experienced sail designers in the world, is now responsible for ALL NORTH SAILS-designs.The Australian born former World Cup sailor, together with the R&D team, has created a range of sails which impressivelyunderlines his competence. Kai, who in the beginning was responsible for the wave and freestyle sails, already achieved a realstroke of genius with his first race-sail: the WARP F2004. He instantly catapulted Micah Buzianis into pole position and togetherthey took the PWA Formula World Champion 2003 as well as the Formula Windsurfing World Champion 2004 overall title.

TT.TOP - improved control in strongwinds. Designer Kai Hopf has takenthe TT.TOP directly off the F2004PWA-Racing victory sail. The uniqueconcave outline results in a 3-dimensional top-twist. Means instronger puffs the top not only twistsin a horizontal direction but alsovertically now. Puffs get completelybuffered and the rig remains neutral.

MAST.SLEEVE.OPENER - makes iteasier to insert mast into the sleeve!A genius trick to speed up rigging –a rubber logo above the boom cut-out slightly opens the mast sleeveso that the mast can be inserted inone go.

EASY.T - keeps the sail rolled up.A simply genius strap which keeps thesail tight after rolling up.

INTELLIGENT.BATTEN - individualbatten setting for improved perfor-mance! As each batten in a sail hasa different function we use differentbatten styles. Achieves 100% draftstability in the center, optimum twist inthe top (both horizontally and verti-cally) and reduced top-weight foreasiest handling.

BOX.BATTEN - extremely stiff, extre-mely light! Stop the draft from moving!Our ultra-stiff BOX.BATTENS areunbeatable in terms of stiffness. 30%reduced weight due to the hollow-construction and the high breakage-resistance makes these battens thebest we have ever produced.

UNIVERSAL.TACK.FITTING - mini-mizes the downhaul-forces. The 3integrated rollers reduce the down-haul-forces down to a minimum. Thesecret for the reduced friction arethe rust-free brass-rollers. When usedwith a pulley-hook the rollers can beeasily removed. Racer-heads can alsoexchange the rollers into high-endroller-bearing rollers.

NORTH SAILS INTELLIGENT.CONSTRUCTION - makes your sail longer lastingwhile still keeping the weight low! – To make a sail durable by just constantly addingmaterials and reinforcements is easy. On the other hand the weight easily rises up to thepoint where a 5.0 sail has the weight (and feeling) of a 6.5. At NORTH SAILS we offerthe highest possible quality and longevity (proved through our unique 5 year warranty)while still keeping the weight on a very low level. Years of experience have lead to a con-struction that eliminates weak spots as well as over-engineering. For example on aFreeride sail we use our strong TRIAX cloth as a frame effectively reinforcing the sail,instead of extensively using (heavy) X.PLY at unnecessary spots just to generate optics.NORTH SAILS IC – we know what we do!

DURA.LUFF.PATCH - long-term luffprotection. The area around theboom cut-out is exposed to extremewear and tear as the luff-panel getsfolded when inserting the mast. This"accordion-effect" can lead to tears inthe luff-panel after a while. The newflexible DURA.LUFF.PATCH reinforcesexactly this area making for a softtransition into the monofilm to avoidfilm-breakage.

INTEGRATED.TACK.PROTECTOR -protects the board and feet. Nowall sails feature an extended integratedmast protector which is double-padded in the upper area. It avoidsdents when the mast hits the deckand effectively protects the feet frominjuries.

FLIP.ROTATING.SYSTEM - no pull,no hard rotation! Takes away thedreaded pull during rotation as thebattens do not touch the mast.

3D.TECHNOLOGY - guarantees anabsolute accurate profile! Superioraerodynamics and absolute profile-accuracy through laser-cloth-cutting,complete fold- and bubble-free gluingof the panels on 3-dimensional mouldsavoiding any tolerance variation. Theresult is a monocoque-corpus with abuilt-in profile.

DURATECH.FOOT - long-term-gua-rantee for the foot area. The sail footgets constantly dragged over theanti-slip especially on modern wide-style boards. To avoid the anti-slipdestroying the seams and cloths weuse our patented DURATECH.FOOT-construction where the seams are run-ning within a plastic channel.

CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT - powerand handling perfectly combined! Theintelligent solution, which lowers thedraft and at the same time supportsthe wide boom area. Allows for apowerful profile without affecting thehandling!

VTS-VISUAL.TRIM.SYSTEM - per-fect trim and maximum range ofuse! You can’t trim faster and moreaccurate! Just pull the downhaul untilthe loose leech wrinkle in the top hitsthe "min wind-limit" or "max wind-limit"(according to the wind-strength) – offyou go. The patented VTS® acts liketurbo-charger and allows for maxi-mum performance and range of use.

HYPER.LEECH - makes speed-oriented sails even faster! Inspiredby airplane-wings. Exactly definedspot from where the top reacts extre-mely sensible. Means: improved loose-leech-twist for more control andimproved stability in puffs and whengetting over-powered.

HTS-HARNESSLINE.TRIM.SYSTEMForget about wrong-positioned harness-lines! Stop pumped-up fore-arms and the never-ending try anderror method to find the correct harnessline position! The print on the sailshows exactly the center of the harnessline position. Just position both endssymmetrically left and right from theprint and off you go.

CROSSRIDE SUPERCROSS/FREERACE NOCAM

Here is our fastest no-cam-sail, which combines sensationalspeed with the advantages of camberless sails in terms ofhandling and ease of rigging. It is a completely new develop-ment which Kai Hopf gave a progressively twisting TT.TOPand a forward-oriented draft position. This improves the righandling, extends the wind range and remarkably improvesthe draft stability. No wonder the brand-new CROSSRIDE isthe first choice of our SuperCross team. By the way allCROSSRIDE sizes fit on one 460-25 mast (one mast fits all!).

R.TYPE FREERIDE WIDEBODY

The brand-new R.TYPE was designed to work on all kinds ofFreeride and Widebody boards, covering an incredibly widewind range. Due to its low-end profile and the new TT.TOP itdevelops enormous low end power, gets planning extremelyearly and easily planes through lulls. It is the ideal weapon fordays where the wind falls below planing force. The 2 super-soft rotating HYPER.CAMS keep an aerodynamic shape crea-ting a rock solid profile, which in contrary to no-cam-sails islocked in even without wind pressure. This greatly improvesthe stability. To keep the weight at an absolute minimum theR.TYPE uses only 6 battens (except 9.5 and 10.5), of which 4are extremely stiff BOX.BATTENS.

NATURAL FREEMOVE/FREERIDE

The new NATURALs have been drastically improved, especiallyin handling, comfort and low end power. Kai Hopf "copied" alot from the DISCO without reducing the top end speed. Theresult is an extremely balanced sail, where sizes up to 6.2focus on handling and draft stability (freemove) whereas thelarger sizes focus on planing and handling (freeride). TheNatural is the perfect synthesis of speed, acceleration andcontrol. This makes Windsurfing much easier and less com-plicated and the question: "What is the right sail for me?"becomes obsolete.

DUKE CROSSOVER FREESTYLE-WAVE

Powerful, direct and extremely versatile: hardly any other sailcovers such a wide range of use from waves to flat water free-style as the new DUKE. Strong acceleration and ample powerpush you through mushy onshore conditions as well asthrough speed dependent tricks. A slightly flatter profile andthe new TT.TOP improve the high end control and handling sothat the Duke is more neutral down the line or during difficultfreestyle moves. A real sensation - all sizes can be used withone 430-21 mast only.

DISCO FREESTYLE

Ambitious freestyle sailors swear by the DISCO. The full-ontrick sail is focused on easy handling, maximum low endpower and an extremely wide wind range. They prefer theboosting acceleration as well as the absolute neutral handling.Through the integration of the new TT.TOP and a reworkedtwist pattern Kai Hopf improved the comfort and high windcontrol. You realize this especially in gusty conditions as thesail is much less nervous and easily planes through lulls.

SUPERSTAR WORLD CUP WAVE

The legendary SUPERSTAR in the 2005 design. Extremelyaggressive, very direct and due to a reduced pre-shaping andboom length it is now even more neutral when going downthe line. This also supports the new twist-active TT.TOP whichimproves the high end control. Also new is that all sizes can besailed on one (400-19) mast only! The Superstar is designedas a World Cup wave sail meaning it’ll perform as good inHookipa as in Sylt or Gran Canaria.

VOODOO HARDCORE WAVE

A completely new designed and much lighter VOODOO iswait-ing for you. Just 5 battens and the intelligent mix ofX.PLY and TRIAX cloths reduce the weight to improve thehandling and response. Yet the hardcore durability remainsunchanged. It still remains one of a very few monofilm-freesails surviving even the most hardcore days. Due to its uniqueelastic Vinyl window the VOODOO is also the perfect sail forextreme nuking and gusty conditions. On top: “One mast fitsall” (400-19) – the complete sail range can be used with onemast only!

INSTINCT WORLD CUP WAVE

The INSTINCT has also been radically changed, to cover aneven wider variety of wave conditions and surf styles. With thenew TT.TOP Kai Hopf increased the top-twist increasing theelasticity. In combination with the shortened boom length, thisimproves the handling remarkably. The new Instinct also feat-ures an increased amount of X.PLY in the top area furtherincreasing the durability.
