Cross Database QueriesThis guide will cover the basics on how to create an external table reference for Cross-database querying Azure SQL Databases. For this guide to work, we will need two Azure SQL Databases, we will need at least one SQL Login in master database and a SQL user in the remote database that references the created SQL Login in master database. After this, we will proceed to create the database scoped credential, remote data source, remote table, external table reference and other settings that need to be configured before attempting to do cross-database queries in Azure SQL Database.

Talk to a SQL Database in Azure Gov from a Teams chat: Using Teams & Flow in the Government CloudBot integration in Teams isn't available yet in the Government Cloud [as of this writing], but we can still 'talk' to other systems (like a SQL database) using Flow. Let's consider the scenario where my friend Tony Stark and I are both a part of the Department of Transportation, and we're tracking the number of potholes on streets throughout the State. Tony decides to track and store the pothole data in a cloud-based SQL database that he has created in our Azure Government tenant. I'm a project manager who wants to query this data from my Teams environment, without special tools or having to understand database queries. Let's look at one approach.

Prevent the disaster of accidental deletion for your Postgres database on Azure There’s a special kind of sinking feeling in your stomach when you realize that you (or someone on your team) inadvertently deleted your database, especially your production database. You've been there before: you ran a command and as soon as you hit enter you realize what you've done. You cancel the command as fast as possible, but it's too late, the damage is done. Time starts moving in slow motion. Seconds seem like minutes, minutes like hours. How much data have you lost, can you even get things back up, are your backups gone?

UI testing for Windows apps with WinAppDriver and Appiu In another post on this blog we have seen how telemetry is important to implement a good DevOps story for your software projects. Another important piece of the puzzle is testing. In order to be agile and deliver fast, we need to make sure that the quality bar is always met. This is where automated testing comes in. When we commit new code to our repository, we need to make sure we haven't broken anything before releasing a new version of our application. When we implement testing, typically we focus only on the business logic side. This is why we often adopt unit testing, which takes our logic and split it into small pieces, which are tested separately and independently. However, client applications aren't made only by business logic, but also the user interface plays an important role. The business logic of our application, in fact, can be bug free, but there may be visual issues that we have missed because they happen only on a specific combination of resolution, screen size, etc. For example, if our UI doesn't fully support devices with high DPIs, an important button or another actionable item might not be visible, preventing our customers to use the application.

Reservoir Simulation on Azure: HPC for Oil & Gas Reservoir simulation is a key computational workload in the Oil & Gas (O&G) industry. Given the fundamental importance of being able to predict the availability and production of hydrocarbons, O&G operators and service companies strive to employ high fidelity models and sophisticated algorithms to provide high confidence to critical business and engineering decisions. Hence, reservoir simulation, along with seismic imaging is very computational-resource hungry. This motivates the application of high performance computing (HPC) to these workflows to optimize the time to solution within the constraints of technology and available resources (personnel, financial).

Background threads in ASP.net applications (Part 1 – the concept application) When debugging memory dumps from customers, I have come to see, quite often, a pattern that you should not use in your application if you don’t want to run into trouble. This pattern can be resumed in a simple rule: thou shall not create thy own threads in thy application! To show you what I mean, through a series of three blog articles I will create a simple application and show you what happens when we transgress this rule.

Background threads in ASP.net applications (Part 2 – threading side effects) In the second article of the series on the dangers of ASP.net background threading, to illustrate the dangers of such an architecture, I will start by introducing one more modification to the code of the sample application. This modification will be added to the code of the Global.asax that starts off the infinite loop thread that runs outside of the ASP.net thread pool. Here is the listing again, but notice the lines of code that have been added.

UI testing for Windows apps with WinAppDriver and Appium - Azure DevOps In the previous post we have learned how, thanks to WinAppDriver and Appium, we can perform UI testing against our Windows applications. In that post we have created a sample WPF app and then we have tested some basic user interactions, using the local WinAppDriver service running on our machine. However, the most interesting scenario is automating these tests so that, in the context of a CI/CD pipeline, they can be automatically executed every time we commit new code to our repository. The recently announced integration with Azure DevOps makes the task easier to implement, since the WinAppDriver service is already up & running on every Windows hosted agent. However, you may find some challenges in implementing the workflow since UI testing is quite different from unit testing and it has different requirements.

Not all Postgres connection pooling is equal Not a week goes by that I don't have a conversation about connection management in Postgres. Connection management itself is admittedly a sore spot for Postgres, but it is also a confusing one for many. The cost of connections in Postgres has been talked about a few times before. The short summary is that each connection into Postgres is going to consume about 10 MB of memory from your database. If you have 50 connections, you're using about 500 MB of memory on just having those connections. The wasted memory is one thing, but the other is that even when a connection isn't doing anything there is some additional overhead for Postgres itself.

Advanced security for any app in your organization In today’s modern enterprises, apps run the workplace. While we see an average of 129 IT-managed applications, discovery data from our Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) shows that the total number of apps accessed by employees in large organizations exceeds 1,000. In addition, we see that a hybrid app environment is a reality for many organizations. You likely still have on-premises apps alongside your modern cloud apps, as well as a wide range of custom line-of-business apps, that all need to be equally integrated into your security strategy.Event Recording - Demystifying Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams Migration With the recent announcement around end of life for Microsoft’s Skype for Business the transition from SfB to Microsoft Teams is top of mind for many organizations. Organizations that have not already started down the migration route are now taking a long hard look at how to prepare and execute on a migration. To help customers prepare Microsoft’s HLS group has an upcoming live webcast to address this. In this recorded webcast Microsoft’s Pete Anello covers “Demystifying Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams Migration”. Perfmon for IIS and ASP.NETOne regular question posed to our team deals with the performance counters set-up to ensure IIS and ASP.Net application(s) are working properly. However, as every web-application and hence every IIS Server, will behave differently depending on what will be executed, obviously the threshold for which performance will be impacted will vary a lot. Thus, it's essential to define those key values before putting your application in production. By doing a progressive load test, you should be able to identify when the application performance is degraded. Once you've

determined the threshold limit before degradation and the threshold where everything is working well, you just must collect the performance counters and you'll get your key values.

Application pool gets recycled due to anti-virus? It's not the first time that I heard of my customers complaining about their anti-virus: after a certain activity (such as a regular scanning for system files), their application pools get restarted automatically.

ASP.net segment heap sizes – or how much virtual memory my web-app will need Many times, customers come to me saying they have a feeling that their ASP.net application takes up more memory then it did before, especially if they are migrating from the .Net 2.0 Runtime to the .Net 4.0 Runtime and from a 32 bit architecture to a 64 bit architecture.

IIS web-servers running in Windows Azure may reveal their private IP for certain requests. Internet Information Services (the handy web-server from Microsoft) runs on Windows server OS but also in the Microsoft Azure Cloud. If you are building virtual machines and deploying them to the cloud (IAAS – Infrastructure as a Service) or using Cloud Services from Windows Azure (PAAS – Platform as a Service), you will basically be using an IIS web-server in behind the scenes to host your service.

The complete list of changes to make to activate Client Certificate Mapping on IIS using Active Dire Setting up client certificate mapping in IIS 8.5 and above using Active Directory has never been very complex, however, I find that there is little to no documentation that walks you through the entire process from A-Z. In this article, I intend to look at setting up Client Certificate Mapping, and explain how client certificate mapping settings should work to give you more insight into this type of authentication.

Hunting for reconnaissance activities using LDAP search filters The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) protocol is heavily used by system services and apps for many important operations like querying for user groups and getting user information. It’s a prime target for Active Directory attacks, Kerberoasting, and other reconnaissance steps after attackers have infiltrated a network.

SQL Server CPU usage available in sys.dm_os_ring_buffers DMV starting SQL Server 2019 RC on Linux Sys.dm_os_ring_buffers DMV has been a key DMV used for monitoring SQL Server by built-in tools as well as third party monitoring utilities. When SQL Server 2017 was released on Linux, unfortunately this DMV did not return correct CPU usage information by SQL Server process. SQL Server team is glad to announce that the starting with SQL Server 2019 release candidate, the sys.dm_os_ring_buffers DMV returns SQL CPU utilization correctly. This improvement should benefit the SQL Server monitoring ecosystem on Linux by providing a way to monitor SQL Server CPU usage and enable decision making to engage corrective action if required.

Each tier is differentiated by the amount of compute in vCores that can be provisioned, the memory per vCore, and the IOPS guaranteed. You can scale a server between the General Purpose and Memory Optimized tiers. However, today there isn’t an automated way to change a server from the Basic tier to the General Purpose or Memory Optimized tiers. You can use the bash script (provided) to simplify migrating existing databases from a Basic server to a General Purpose or Memory Optimized server.
