think about itWe have been using paper with dark lines for ages. You probably already used it in school as a child, perhaps tried to put a small minus sign just above the line to make it visible? At work you may have made notes from a meeting and not been entirely sure what a syllable or word meant because the ink from the pen clashed with the dark line crossing over it. Without us even realising it we have always had to put in extra effort to separate the dark lines of the paper from the pen marks when we read. These clashes reduce our concentration and distract us. The dark lines have been around for very very long, actually since medi-eval times! That is history.

The ingenious idea of having paper with white ‘non-conflict’ lines occurred to Swedish designer Olof Hansson when he was sketching a design for another product on traditional graph paper. Olof got irritated because the dark lines really made a mess of his sketch. It was then the idea of having white lines struck him. White lines would still help him with the graphical support but without any interference with what he wrote or drew.

Whitelines® was founded in January 2006 in a small apartment in Stockholm with one ambition – ‘to make, through innovation, a con-tribution to a better world, no matter how small’. The three founders of Whitelines® believe that true innovation is about helping people without there being any negative downside to any third party, situa-tion or the environment. Why not take one of the mainstays of everyday life and improve it ? The means to this end was a simple but very effective idea – a new kind of writing paper which, through its remarkable clarity, could support everyone‘s writing, drawing and thinking.

environmental policyYou have stopped using the Zero Carbon Footprint label, are you still an ‘eco-company’?

We are not an ‘eco-company’ and have never looked at ourselves as ‘eco’. We just do what we think all companies should do: take all possible responsibility for the environment. Just that simple.

We talk about the life of the planet here and it’s of course a no-brainer, we must all strive to eliminate the harm we cause! This statement shouldn’t be considered specifically ‘eco’ but just common sense.

As some of you already know we were among the first, if not the very first paper company in the world to mark all our products with a Carbon Footprint label and later on also with Zero Carbon Footprint. We can’t do that now. We are in a sourcing situation where we don’t have all data for the Life Cycle Analysis which is the foundation for a Carbon Footprint label. And as we don’t want to

claim taking responsibility for something we can’t guarantee we will instead focus on other actions.

Whitelines® will continue for the time being to use a Swedish totally Carbon Free Paper in most of our products. (This means a paper where no Carbon Dioxide from fossil fuels is being emitted during production, a very good thing actually). In those cases we are not able to keep this level we use FSC paper as our lowest level for paper. Note! You will find a declaration for each product in the back of this catalogue.

By the way, no one would be happier than we if other companies would be comparable with us in terms of taking this responsibility. Imagine if we all make the responsibility for the environment an essential.

It may come as a surprise but Whitelines® has produced something that looks like a classic. With hard cover and linen cloth this book looks similar to many others on the outside but differ of course on the inside. Whitelines® Hard Bound Cloth books comes with orange and gray covers, with orange marker ribbons and in two sizes. 8 mm lined inlay in the A4 and 6 mm lined inlay in the A5. (Clever thing to point out here is probably that all Whitelines® books now are made to lay flat when opened.)

No matter how conceptually abstract you do it, when you strip down the Whitelines® concept to the bone you will probably end up with a sheet of white lined fairly tinted paper. It’s easy on the eye and through the absence of dis-traction it allows you to pay full attention to your ideas. To simply manifest our concept we made Orange Glue. You could say it´s a nude product with the paper fully exposed and only with an orange glue keeping the sheets together.
