As a tool for reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) activities and enhancing reliability of the substation, condition monitoring has become an essential process.

It involves continuous diagnosis of the equipment in service, record-keeping of historical data of performance parame-ters, trend analysis of events, and suggesting necessary cor-rective action to keep the equipment working effectively.

Conventional surge arrester monitors display only the num-ber of surges discharged by one specific surge arrester, and some of them also the instantaneous leakage current through it. This data is displayed locally, at the surge arrester, inside the substation. Such data give a vague picture of the surge arrester’s condition.

ABB Ability™ Wireless Monitor for surge arresters changes this. Along with recording the magnitude and timestamp of the discharge current, it also records the leakage current. For enhanced event investigation, the device also measures the ambient temperature and humidity. Data is tracked over time for trend analysis, paving the way for understanding and optimizing a substation’s lifetime.

ABB Ability™ Wireless Monitor for surge arresters provides meaningful infor mation on surge arrester condition and substation performance, enabling users to put intelligence into their maintenance. This cuts maintenance costs and re-duces unplanned outages. Likewise, there are opportunities to optimize the maintenance of other equipment in the sub-station gaining knowledge of the overvoltage stress occur-ring during switching operations.

ABB Ability™ Wireless Monitor for surge arresters can be installed on the ground lead of any surge arrester. There is no need for any power supply or additional wiring.

Even old surge counters with electromechanical counter display can be easily replaced with this new surge arrester monitor within one day. As easy as Plug & Play. This device is compatible with all type of surge arresters from ABB and other makers.

—ABB Ability™ Wireless Monitor for surge arresters does not need any protective enclosure for on-field installation. It comes in a highly sealed enclosure with IP67 protection rating.

With reliable and safe on-board power supply, in form of redundant Li-ion batteries and solar panels, there is no need for installing a separate AC or DC power arrangement for this device.

Monitoring accuracy and data collection frequency of ABB Ability™ Wireless Monitor for surge arresters are higher than con ventional surge arrester monitoring systems. With a wide array of measured parameters, the new Wireless Monitor offers substantially more advantage to users.

The LoRaWANTM specification is a Low Power, Wide Area Networking (LPWAN) protocol designed to wirelessly connect battery operated ‘things’ like sensors, to the inter-net in regional, national or global networks, and targets key Internet of Things (IoT) requirements such as data com-munication, end-to-end security and localization services. Data can be transmitted via public or private IoT networks.

—Using a single LoRaWANTM gateway, the data can be transmitted over a wide area, with a radius of at least 10 km.

The measured and recorded data from ABB Ability™ Wire-less Monitor for surge arrester is transmitted to a cloud- connected or on-site server, in a secure, encrypted format. From this server, the data can be accessed by the SCADA system, asset management or maintenance planning system of the user, or through an ABB Ability™ Ellipse APM (Asset Performance Management) platform.

—ABB AbilityTM Wireless Monitor for surge arrester measures key operational and health parameters, collecting data.

As interest for online monitoring is growing, ABB offers a wireless, IoT-enabled surge arrester monitoring system. It measures surge currents instantly along with total leakage current, ambient temperature and humidity – far more frequently than conventional methods based on recurring substation maintenance records.

This device has been tested for EMC and for harsh environ-mental conditions, and is suitable for MV, HV and GIS surge arrester installations.
