A few months ago I was sitting on my porch lamenting the state of the world. I was excited about the digital programming we were planning for the Fall of 2020 but my heart was heavy knowing that audiences wouldn’t be able to enjoy live performance together in the near-term and that the magical exchange between performers and viewers would be absent from our work. I looked towards my neighbour’s porch and then out at the curb and it suddenly dawned on me that live music could still happen over the summer with built-in safety and social distancing using our porches as opera boxes and the sidewalk as the stage.

Certainly an intimate concert from your porch is a far cry from the energy created when 1000 people gather together at Koerner Hall or at the Winter Garden Theatre. But with its own intimate magic, we hope that PORCHSIDE SONGS will remind all of us – even at the most precarious of times – how special it is to witness art live.

May your concert bring you a sense of connectedness and a reminder of the healing power of great songs and stories.

WELCOME TO PORCHSIDE SONGS

L A N D AC K N O W L E D G M E N TThe Musical Stage Company performs in venues both traditional and surprising. With gratitude and respect, we acknowledge that Toronto is in the “Dish With One Spoon Territory.” The Dish With One Spoon is a treaty between the Anishinaabe Nation, Mississaugas of the New Credit, and Haudenosaunee Confederacy that bound them to share the territory and protect the land. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples, Europeans, and all newcomers, have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship, and respect. We recognize the presence and endurance of all Indigenous people on and off this land, both recorded and unrecorded, upon which we are privileged to be able to live, work, and play.

BEAU DIXONFor The Musical Stage Company: CAROLINE, OR CHANGE (2012); PASSING STRANGE.

Beau is a multi-award-winning actor, playwright, music director, and sound designer. His first gig with The Musical Stage Company was as apprentice music director for CAROLINE, OR CHANGE (2012, co-produced by Obsidian Theatre). In 2017, he received a Toronto Critics Award for best lead actor in a musical for his performance as the narrator in PASSING STRANGE, also a Musical Stage Company & Obsidian Theatre production. Beau has performed at Stratford, Shaw, Tarragon, Factory, Crow’s, Soulpepper, Vertigo, ATP, Lunchbox, Arts Club, TNB, Neptune, Thousand Islands, 4th Line and other theatres throughout Canada. Not only does he get a kick out of acting and composing music, but he’s also written a few plays. He is Artistic Director and co-founder of Firebrand Theatre. In 2011, he was inducted into Peterborough’s Pathway of Fame for his leadership in the arts. You can check out Beau’s music on www.itunes.com, and read his plays at www.playwrightsguild.ca.

VANESSA SEARSFor The Musical Stage Company: CAROLINE, OR CHANGE (2020); PASSING STRANGE.

Vanessa is beyond grateful for the opportunity to perform as theatres across Canada have closed. Music continues to provide a sense of freedom and release during uncertain times and she is happy to share some light and love – from a safe distance.

A Dora Award, Toronto Theatre Critics Award, and Critic’s Pick Award-winning actress, Vanessa most recently appeared as Emmie in CAROLINE, OR CHANGE at the historic Winter Garden Theatre (Musical Stage Company and Obsidian Theatre). Her other selected credits include: Edwina in PASSING STRANGE (Musical Stage Company and Obsidian Theatre); Mary Poppins in MARY POPPINS, Dorothy in THE WIZARD OF OZ (Young People’s Theatre); Mum in BILLY ELLIOT, Ronette in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (Stratford Festival); Polly Plummer in THE MAGICIAN’S NEPHEW, Flaemmchen in GRAND HOTEL, Zoe in AN OCTOROON (Shaw Festival); Nicola in the Canadian Premiere of KINKY BOOTS (Mirvish Productions).

Asian Riffing Trio will perform a collection of songs that are close to their hearts, including some brand new original music. Chris Tsujiuchi, Kevin Wong, and Colin Asuncion make up the vocal supergroup Asian Riffing Trio (or ART, for short). These three multitalented queer Asian artists subvert the boyband format. With their characteristic soulful vocals and innovative musical arrangements, ART has established itself as a true artistic force and one of Toronto’s best-kept secrets.
