Formato do Material Didático

Sequência Didática

Público Alvo Alunos do 9º Ano - Ensino fundamental

A produção dessa

Segundo Vani Moreira Kenski:

compreendê-los melhor e a olhar a professores construção do conhecimento sob

lhes significados;

Conhecer a diferença entre festa e feriados;

Ampliar o vocabulário;

Utilizar as novas tecnologias como ferramentas de aprendizagem;

Socializar os conhecimentos pesquisados por meio do Facebook;

Party – A party is an event to celebrate people or important facts. The most

common types of parties are birthday parties (which usually take place once a

year, especially on the day that one is born) and religious parties (to celebrate

one’s beliefs). When a party reaches a great variety of people, it becomes a

festival, attracting more public and becoming more evident in society.

Task 3

Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving goes back a long time in North American history. It started with

some of the earliest settlers. In 1621 a ship carrying 100 people left Plymouth,

England. It landed on the east coast of America at a place now called Plymouth,

Massachusetts. The ship was called The Mayflower.

The people who came on this ship were Puritans. They were also

“separatists”. They wanted to separate from the Church of England and start their

own church. These people are now called the Pilgrim Fathers.

The first winter in America was a very difficult one. The Pilgrim Fathers had to

learn how to grow food in the new soil. Also, the climate was too cold for some of

them. Nearly half of them died.

However, they had some help. The Indians taught them how to grow corn and

maize.

The Pilgrim Fathers were very happy when they had their first harvest. It was a

time to celebrate. They cooked a big turkey dinner.

This was the first Thanksgiving dinner. The Pilgrim Fathers continued to

celebrate the harvest in this way every year.

Later, the Americans made Thanksgiving Day a national holiday. It falls on the

fourth Thursday of November every year.

Task 4

Halloween

Halloween is a holiday in some English-speaking countries which is celebrated

on the night of October 31st. In the USA, as well as in other countries, children wear

costumes and go to people's homes saying "Trick or treat!" to ask for candy, which

is called sweets in the United Kingdom; that way, people traditionally give it to them.

This practice originally involved a treat. A treat is when someone says that they will

do something bad to you if they do not get what they want. In this case, the threat

could be explained as: "Give me a treat or I will play a trick on you."

Children today usually do not play tricks if they do not get treats. However,

some children still get up to mischief (pranks or things to make fun of people; like

putting toilet paper in trees; writing on windows with soap or throwing eggs at

people's houses). People sometimes dress up as ghosts, witches, goblins and other

scary things for Halloween. In Brazil, this day is often celebrated in schools or TV

programs for children.

Task 5

Valentine’s Day

In Brazil, Valentine's Day is known as "Dia dos Namorados" and is celebrated

on June 12, when couples exchange gifts, chocolate, cards and flower bouquets.

This day was chosen probably because it is before the "Festa Junina", when

traditionally many single women perform popular rituals, called simpatias, in order to

find a good husband or boyfriend.

The February 14's Valentine's Day is not celebrated at all, mainly for cultural

and commercial reasons, since it usually falls a short time before or after Carnival, a

major floating holiday in Brazil that has been long regarded as a holiday of sex and

debauchery by many in the country. The "Dia dos Namorados" is not only a time for

romance but also for making money, as it usually helps to boost sales - buying

presents is a part of relationships . If you're dating, don't forget to do something to

make him or her feel special: show how much you care without expecting anything in

return.

Task 6

Saint Patrick’s Day - March 17 th

An Irish holiday who converted the Irish to christianism around 430 DC nobody

really knows his place of birth, but it’s believed it would be in Scotland ( around 373

AD). At 16 years old, he was kidnapped by pirates and sold as a slave in Ireland. He

remained captive during 6 years, working as a sheep shepherd and started to have

religious visions that allowed him to find a way to escape on a ship to France, country

where he became a priest and later on, a bishop at 60 years old, Saint Patrick came

back to Ireland and decided to preach Christianism and end the Paganism.

As the Irish couldn’t understand the meaning of Hole Trinit, Patrick used a

shamrock as a metaphor to explain the concept of Trinity ( Father, Sonand, Holy

Spirit). Saint Patrick is considered the Ireland Patron saint, but this date isn’t

considered an official holiday in Ireland.

The first Saint Patrick’s celebration in America was made by the Irish

immigrants in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1737. Besides the religious meaning,

nowadays Saint Patrick’s Day is a date to use green in everything, clothes,

ornaments and even in foods and drinks the green dye is utilized, everything to honor

the Irish saint.

The Leprechauns – dwarves witch make part of the traditional Irish customs

are another symbol of this date, representing guardians of the gold pot that could be

found over the rainbow.

b) What is the important color in this date?

c) Where you can find the pot of gold?

2) If you could find a pot of gold at the rainbow’s end, what you would like to find

besides money? Write on the coins below:

One of the many traditions involving Saint Patrick’s Day is the habit of

sending friends and family “Irish Blessings”. There are blessings for many

kinds of occasions, especially weddings, and the most famous ones are

attributed to St. Patrick.

2) Search for some of these blessings on the internet. Each group must make a

poster, writing an Irish Blessing. To finish the activities, students will spread the

posters around the school, wishing their friends good luck.
