The water is neither good nor bad, moral nor immoral. It’s like money that way. There are always those who misquote the Bi- ble by saying, “Money is the root of all evil,” when the verse really says, “The love of money is a root of all sorts of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Even when Pe- ter spoke of the water of the flood, knowing the world-wide devastation it caused, he pointed to that water as symbolic of the waters of baptism. Why? Because just as the waters of the flood drowned the sinful world and also lifted up the ark and those in it, saving them from destruction, so in baptism our sinful nature is drowned daily in repentance and the new life of faith in Jesus, in whom we have salvation, is raised up again (1 Peter 3). Peter was doing fine on the water. Think about how incredible that is: He was walking on water! No special shoes or floatation devices. Just…just…what? Some would say, “Just faith. All he had was faith.” That’s not entirely wrong, but it’s not entirely accurate. We love to talk about faith, but in doing so we some- times avoid talking about Jesus. We even make faith and Jesus two very dis- tinct things. While they aren’t the same, there is a connection. There must be, or faith isn’t faith. The connection isn’t hard to figure out. Faith is never its own thing, even though some speak of it that way. It always has an object. If it doesn’t have an object, it’s not faith. Peter’s faith was in Jesus and his Word. Peter said, “If it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus did, so Peter did. And it worked! But it’s not Peter’s faith that held him up and kept him from sinking. It was Jesus. Faith played a part: he trusted Jesus. But when he “saw the wind,” which likely means that there were waves around him which made the “ground” he was standing on look very unstable and, in fact, impossible to stand on, Pe- ter began to sink. TREADING THE DEEP WATERS OF CHRIST When the disciples saw (Jesus) walking on the sea, they were terrified

and cried out in fear, “It’s a ghost!” 27 But Jesus spoke to them at once, saying, “Take heart! It is I! Do not be afraid.”

28 Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

29 Jesus said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat, walked on the water, and went to-

ward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid. As he be-gan to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God!” (Matthew 14:22-36).

It may seem that I’m mixing my metaphors. It seems the better title for this arti-cle, considering the Scripture from Matthew, would be, “Treading the Deep Waters of Doubt.”

But I want to be fair to the water. The water is neither good nor bad, moral nor immoral. It’s like money that way. There are always those who misquote the Bi-ble by saying, “Money is the root of all evil,” when the verse really says, “The love of money is a root of all sorts of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Even when Pe-ter spoke of the water of the flood, knowing the world-wide devastation it caused, he pointed to that water as symbolic of the waters of baptism.

We love to talk about faith, but in doing so we some-times avoid talking about Jesus. We even make faith and Jesus two very dis-tinct things.

Church News From the Pastor (continued from page 1)

Could Jesus have kept Peter from sinking even with Peter’s doubt? Sure. But Jesus wanted to make a point, that where our trust lies is important. Peter doubted, which meant that he trusted in the power of the winds and waves to sink him, and thus make the sea his watery grave, more than he trusted Je-sus to keep him treading on top of the water. Jesus once told his disciples, “Whatever you ask for in prayer, as you believe, you will receive” (Mat-thew 21:22). We could say that, in a sense, as Pe-ter believed, he received. He believed in sinking, so he began to sink.

Of course, these words of Jesus can be twisted in unbiblical ways. But here’s my (hopefully) simple point: Faith is important, but just as important is the object of faith. The object of our faith is Jesus, which also means that we should believe all that he says.

None of this should suggest that faith in Jesus is anything less than a miracle of God. It is God the Holy Spirit who creates faith, and if people reject the Spirit’s work, they will not have faith.

But, again, the point is that while our doubts can run deep – as deep as the waters of the sea – the foun-dation of faith runs deeper. We have far more rea-son to trust Jesus than to doubt him. And the power of both his work and his words of promise is far greater than the power of those things that cause doubt. Unfortunately, we forget that sometimes and fail to go to the Word for the power that strengthens us.

So the encouragement is simple and something you’ve heard a million times: read the Word, hear the Word, study the Word. If you want some help or suggestions on doing that, just ask me, and re-member that you are welcome to join Bible study at church whenever you can. As the Word works in you, your trust will grow and you will experience “sinking” far less often. And even when you do sink, Jesus will continue to hear your call for help and lift you up. Remember, the foundation of your faith, Jesus and his Word, is solid as a rock.

SCHOOL BATHROOM REMODEL

After several years of dreaming and planning, we are excited to report that the boys’ and girls’ bathrooms at school will be receiving a much-needed renovation this summer. New partitions, fixtures, ceiling and lighting are all in the plans.

We are looking for some help to remove the old parti-tions as soon as possible, so that the plumbers may begin the fixture removal and installation. If you can help, please call the church/school office at 464-3212. Thank you.

CALLING ALL DYI’ERS!

There are several odd jobs/fix-it projects around the church and school that need to be done before the start of the new school year. These include:

• Floor tile installed under the sinks in the

church basement bathrooms.

• Vinyl baseboard repair at school.

• Small painting projects.

• Small carpentry projects.

• Grounds work and minor fence repair.

If you can help, call the church school office at 464-3212. Thank you.

The end of the school year has come While we are entering

the summer months, we are already looking ahead to 2019- 2020.

What does God have in store for St. Paul’s Lutheran School? Will the

Word of God still be taught daily to its students? Will our students

use the “opportunities” God gives them to share his Word with oth-

ers? Will our students and teachers share in the many blessings of

Christian education? The answer, of course, is YES to all of the above.

There will be some changes in the faculty, but God will bless

the efforts of whoever is called here to serve. We have a growing

Early Childhood Ministry with our Afterschool Care program. Our

students excelled in the arts this past year by either singing, playing

piano, or playing an instrument at various festivals. Our athletics pro-

gram promotes Christian attitudes both on and off the court. As we wrap up this school year and start

planning for next year, we ask God for his guidance in all matters. We won’t worry about who is

called or how many students will be in each room. God is in control of all things. We will instead focus

on teaching and spreading God’s Word. We will, along with the congregation, use God’s Word in a

Christ centered education to assist families in training students for Christian lives on earth and for eter-

nity. May God bless the efforts of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School as it uses every “opportunity”

to spread the Gospel.
