    Press Release-September 2011

ASFF and Partners Organise Training, Roundtable and Awareness on

    UNCAT in Lagos

In December 2008, the European Union and Avocats Sans Frontieres France

signed a grant contract for the implementation of the project United Nations

Convention against Torture Promotion and Implementation, for Its Full enjoyment

by the Nigerian Civil Society (ProCAT). The specific objective of the project is to

reduce torture and ill-treatment at all levels through the use of judicial processes

and provision of pro bono legal services to victims of torture. The project also aims

to raise public awareness towards promoting the principles of the United Nations

Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or

    Punishment.

As part of the activities geared towards implementing the specific objectives of

the project, ASFF in partnership with the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON) and

the Human Rights Institute of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA-HRI) has

organised another round of training, roundtable and awareness creation in Lagos

on the United Nations Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or

    Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT).

The five-day event comprised a three-day training, one-day roundtable and one-

    day awareness creation.

12 judicial actors who had attended the previous training were the participants at

the roundtable session conducted by ASFF and LACON resource persons. Among

the decisions reached was that other forms of investigation such as forensic

investigation should be deployed by law enforcement agencies, rather than

    torture.

13 participants among whom were media practitioners and nominees of the

International Federation of Women Lawyers attended the awareness creation

session. The participants called on ASFF and its partners to develop more channels

of public sensitisation on the UNCAT

The event peaked with a training attended by 19 judicial actors comprising judges,

magistrates, police officers, prison service officers and other para-legal experts

who were educated on national and international remedies to torture including
