INTRODUCTION.CHESS without the use of Queens and Rookssounds impossible. As a game it woulddoubtless be so; but so many excellent problemshave been composed along these restricted lines,that any solver who lost the Queens and Rooksfrom his set of chessmen would still have materialfor almost endless study. My good friend andcollaborator, H. Staerker of Bournemouth, Eng-land, recently sent me 2,500 positions in whichWhite's force, apart from King and Pawns, waslimited to Knights and Bishopsthe result of onlya few weeks' search. This book is largely basedon his collection. All problems in four or moremoves are omitted, and the restrictions as toforce are extended to Black; but even so the workof selection has not been an easy one. The re-sult should at least prove an interesting study ofthe interplay of the minor officers; and any solverwho masters all the problems should become anadept at handling his Knights and Bishops inmore complex positions. The problems are gradedin groups, according to the number of WhiteKnights or Bishops used. Pawn promotions haveconsistently been avoided, where they involvedthe making of the rejected officers. Nos. 1, 19and 48 are distinctly members of our class. Thepromotions in Nos. 17, 24 and 78 are rather in-

11 INTRODUCTION.cidental. Black Pawns cannot, of course, be pre-vented from claiming Rooks or Queens, but thepoint of No. 22 turns on the reply to the try,1. QSd5, and the problem belongs clearly in thecollection.No regular arrangement according to themeswas practicable, as the different problems touchat so many points. The restriction as to force,however, results in certain outline characteristics.The attack of a Knight is essentially diagonal, asis that of the Bishop; consequently problems in-volving flight squares will for the most part havethem diagonally. Indeed, there exists a wholemultitude of problems with only minor officers,in which the Black King has three or four diagon-al flights, usually on the move preceding the mate.They are very tame affairs, and repeat one anotherso often as to deserve relegation to the pigeon-hole of worn-out themes. Nos. 32, 38, 49, 54, 55are the best or earliest examples of the variousflight-principles involved.The most prominent strategic characteristic of

the collection is the self-blocks by Black. Theseoccur in every other problem more or less con-spicuously. They should especially be studiedand compared in the Frontispiece and in Nos. 25,30, 31, 48, 56, 60, 61, 64, 65, 74, 75 and 79.

Another element to be noted is the way inwhich the minor officers can be made to play forposition according as Black relaxes its guard invarious directions or furnishes convenient blocks.Nos. 44, 52, 53, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73 and 87 allillustrate some phase of this form of skirmishing.It will readily be seen from the last two groupsmentioned that in general the problems in th

INTRODUCTION. Illcollection must be of waiting, rather than threat,strategy; and this trait holds good throughout.

Less general resemblances and groupings canbe found by the reader according to his personaltaste; such comparisons will serve to make thebook something more than a series of isolatedpuzzles. A few hints may be given at random,to be made the starting-point for further com-parisons.

16. So many problems illustrate pure andmodel mates that it is useless to enumerate them.The following by English and American com-posers are noteworthy: Nos. 45, 72, 85, 88and 94.

It will be noticed that many of the problemsare of recent date. There is no question that asthe refinement of problem composition continues,similar results will be achieved with smaller andsmaller material, so that more and more themeswill be brought within the compass of the Knightand Bishop class. Take No. 33. The four mateshere combined have been published under differ-ent names innumerable times, certainly severalhundred times. No. 33 was the first example with-out a White Queen, but within the last three years,at least a dozen other renderings without a Queenhave been published. This modern craze for theexpression of ideas in their lowest terms andpurest forms has its advantages as well as itsdrawbacks. The drawbacks are the many anaemicpresentations of worn-out themes which no columnor magazine has as yet shown the strength ofmind to refuse its diagrams to. The advantagesare the occasional masterpieces of concise strategyand gem-like purity which I have tried to gathertogether in these pages.
