2. Meet Our Team 3. Meet Our Team Andrew Sterner Emily Askwyth Ellie Farber Olivia Temple 4. Intro Climate change is a serious issue that is happening in our world today and affecting all of us. Our team would like to share with you all whats going on, and inspire you to recognize this problem and do your part in helping our planet. We will teach you all about Extreme weather, Ocean Pollution and Air pollution to prove that climate change is a real issue which we can all work to stop. 5. Andrew Sterner Extreme weather 6. Cities across the US setting record temps Increased risk of stroke, heart attack, etc. Deaths due to water shortages Heat waves 7. $2.2 Billion dollars in agricultural losses Unprecedented water restrictions In-N-Out and Chipotle raised their prices! California Drought 8. Brief, more extreme winters 9. Frequent, destructive hurricanes Up to 20 more hurricanes a year Intensity of individual hurricanes rising 10. Violence Slight changes in heat cause spikes in violence Drought causes drop in economy All correlation, causation isnt proven 11. Ocean Acidification Ellie Farber 12. Ocean Acidification Carbon dioxide is absorbed by seawater Chemical reactions occur that reduce seawater ph, carbon ions, and saturation 13. Ocean pH Problems pH has dropped 0.1 pH units since Industrial revolution Future prediction: ocean will absorb more C02 and become more acidic In the next century C02 will cause pH level to raise 150 percent This is more acid than the ocean has contained in 20 million years. 14. Ocean pH Levels 15. Calcium Impact Acid causes problems with Calcium Calcium is the building blocks skeletons and shells in marine bio 16. Biological Impact Impacts ocean creatures in various degrees Photosynthetic algae will benefit from higher C02 levels Will affect calcifying species: oysters, clams, sea urchins, coral, shellfish 17. Petropods Eaten by most organisms What happens when placed in pH water 18. An Emerging Problem Impossible to calculate percent acid in ocean water; just beginning to monitor it Hurting the food chain Hurting underwater ecosystems 19. Any substance that people introduce into the atmosphere that has damaging effects on living things and the environment is considered air pollution -National Geographic o Gases, fumes, dust odour 22. Two Different Kinds of Air Pollutants Primary Pollutants: Gases and particles put into the air Ex: Carbon Monoxide Secondary Pollutants: When those pollutants mix together and create harmful chemicals Ex: Smog 23. Seen Any Smog Lately? Smog is a mixture of air pollutants and fog It can be invisible or visible Both are equally as harmful Both contribute to global warming 24. Smog Doesnt Just Hurt the Earth, it Hurts Us Affects the body the same way smoking cigarettes does Health Problems: o breathing issues o asthma o better chance of catching the flu o risk of eye infections 25. Proven Harmful Effects of Air Pollution in China: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSyc72cE3 2Q 26. How Can We Prevent Air Pollution? Examples of how we can reduce: Conserve energy o Turn off lights and electronics Use your car as little as possible o Carpool o Do all errands at once o Actually use your car Use dishwashers and laundry machines only when full 27.
