Competition for Cellists - Woluwe-Saint-Pierre 2018

Prize Edmond Baert

Article 1

The competition for cellists of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre is open to young cello performers aged from 9

to 26 years. Candidates must be attending or must have attended a Belgian or European musical

educational institution (musical Academy, Conservatory or private education for the categories A

and B).

Article 2

The competition is organized into 4 categories of candidates.

Category A : candidates aged from 9 to 13 years and following studies in a musical Academy, in an

equivalent institution or in private education.

Category B : Category B : candidates aged from 14 to 26 years, studying in an Academy or having

obtained the final certificate / diploma before June 30th, 2017. Candidates following studies in an

equivalent institution or in private education.

Category C : candidates aged from 15 to 18 years and following studies in a Royal Conservatory or in an

equivalent institution (including students registered in a Conservatory as "Young Talents")

Category D : candidates aged from 19 to 26 years, following studies in a Royal Conservatory or in an

equivalent institution and not holding a final diploma (Master degree or equivalent).

Article 3

The public rounds are preceded by a pre-selection round behind closed doors, based on the viewing of

the videos submitted by the candidates. For these screenings, only the registrations of candidates whose

dossiers will be complete or admitted administratively by 10 March 2018 will be taken into

consideration. Candidates will be individually informed of the pre-selection results by March 31, 2018.

Article 4

The competition is divided into three stages : the first round is to choose the candidates who will be

admitted to the semi-final round on Friday 11th of May 2018. The semi-final determines the finalists on

Saturday 12th of May 2018.

Article 5

Each candidate will provide a live video recording – a body picture recorded from a fixed point. Each

piece must be recorded in one take (no editing).

The program of the recording will necessarily include a part of the works presented to the Competition

and will not exceed 10 minutes for the categories A and B and 15 minutes for the categories C and D.

The recording will be of good quality under penalty of not being validated by the jury of Competition.

Article 6

The candidates are divided into 4 categories (according to their age).

The programme is composed entirely of original works and is organised as follows :

Category A

Pre-selection round (video recording - maximum 10’) :

Two pieces at the choice of the candidate stemming from the program of semi-final / finale.

Semi-final round (maximum 10') :

Imposed : Paul Bazelaire - Variations sur une chanson naïve, op. 125

(Theme and Variations 1 - 2 - 5 and 7)

One piece at the choice of the candidate

Final round (maximum 10') :

Imposed : Gabriel Fauré - Sicilienne, op. 78

One piece at the choice of the candidate (different from the one presented at the preliminary

round)

Category B

Pre-selection round (video recording – maximum 10’) :

Imposed : Johann Sebastian Bach - Prelude of one of the first three Suites for cello

One piece at the choice of the candidate stemming from the program of semi-final/finale

Semi-final round :

Imposed : Johann Sebastian Bach - Prelude of one of the first three Suites for cello

Imposed : Eric Feldbusch - Phantasmes (edition Andel Uitgave 8400 Oostende and available at

the price of 10,50€ - postage charges not included)

Final round (maximum 15') :

Imposed : Joseph Haydn - Minuet in C (transcription Alfredo Piatti - Ed IMC 551)

First movement of a concert work at the choice of the candidate and not exceeding 10'

(in accordance with the Direction of the Competition)

Category C

Imposed : Johann Sebastian Bach - Prelude of one of the six Suites for cello

One piece at the choice of the candidate stemming from the program of semi-final/finale

Semi-final round :

Imposed : Johann Sebastian Bach - Prelude of one of the six Suites for cello

Imposed : François Servais - La Romanesca (edition "the François Servais Association" and

available at the price of 5,40€ - postage charges not included) + a study to choose from the 6

studies for cello and piano (edition "the Servais Association" and available at the price of 16,20€ -

postage charges not included).

Final round (maximum 20') :

Imposed : First movement of a classical concerto

A concert work to choose from the attached list (see appendix 1).

Category D

Pre-selection round (video recording – maximum 15’) :

Imposed : Johann Sebastian Bach - Prelude of one of the six Suites for cello

One piece at the choice of the candidate stemming from the program of semi-final/finale

Semi-final round (maximum 20’) :

Imposed : Johann Sebastian Bach - Prelude of one of the six Suites for cello

One piece at the candidate's choice (maximum 10’) - in accordance to the Direction of the

Competition

Imposed : Eric Feldbusch - Movements 2 and 3 of Mosaïque (edition A. Van Kerckhoven and

available at the price of 10,00€ - postage charges not included).

Final round (maximum 20’) :

Imposed : First movement of a classical concerto

A concert work to choose from the attached list (see appendix 1)

Article 7

The different rounds and tests will take place at the Cultural and Congress Center of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre

- Salle Fabry - located Avenue Charles Thielemans, 93 in Brussels 1150.

Article 8

The jury is composed of : the alderman for Culture of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre ; the alderman for Education

of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre ; four outstanding personalities, educationalists or renowned instrumentalists

from the world of the cello including Mister Edmond BAERT, Honorary Professor at the Royal

Conservatory of Music of Brussels ; Caroline Descamps, Director of the Music Academy of Woluwe-Saint-

Pierre ; Pierre Brunello, Professor at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Brussels and pianist-

accompanist of the Competition.

Article 9

The jury's deliberations are strictly confidential. The jury has the exclusive authority on the tests and its

decisions are final with no appeal. If one of the jury members has been or was the teacher of a

competitor, the performance will not be assessed by the mentioned teacher.

Article 10

The jury is entitled to shorten any performance if the time given has been exceeded.

Article 11

The candidates must provide the jury with the musical scores of the repertoire presented.

Article 12

The candidates must present themselves at least one hour before the performance. The candidates that

present themselves late for tests won't be admitted to compete.

Article 13

All the rounds, except the pre-selection process, are open to the public.

Article 14

The candidates can present the Competition with an accompanist of their choice or call the official

accompanist of the Competition. In this case, they are required to get in touch with the secretary and the

accompanist before March, 10 2018 (registration deadline).

The rehearsals with the accompanist will take place on Thursday, May 10 (the day before the preselction

round) at the Cultural and Congress Center of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre – Salle Fabry - located Avenue

Charles Thielemans, 93 in Brussels 1150.

Article 15

Registration for the Competition must be sent to "Secrétariat du Concours de Violoncelle de Woluwe-

Saint-Pierre" C/O Académie de Musique, 2, avenue Charles Thielemans - 1150 Bruxelles. The

attachments that must accompany the registration are a recent photo, a double-sided copy of the ID card,

a certificate of the education level, a curriculum vitae of the candidate resuming his artistic background

(studies, schools, names of professors, ...) and a description of the programme presented (subject to

approval by the Direction of the Competition). The deadline for sending the application is March 10,

2018 - date as per postmark.

send your record via: Wetransfer, https://www.grosfichiers.com/fr/, any other website allowing big

data transfer, Youtube, DVD, SD card, USB stick, …

Article 16

The registration fee is 25,00€. This amount must be transferred to the account :

IBAN BE67 0910 0019 9887. BIC : GKCCBEBB - Administration communale de Woluwe-Saint-Pierre -

with the communication "Concours de Violoncelle de Woluwe-Saint-Pierre" + the name of the candidate .

The registration is absolutely non-refundable. The registration fee must be received on the account

of the Municipal Administration by 10 March 2018 at the latest.

Article 17

The registration will not be accepted if one of the documents required for registration is missing or if the

registration fee has not been paid by March 10, 2018.

Article 18

An acknowledgment of receipt shall be sent to each candidate whose application is complete with all the

attachments required : the programme presented by the candidate, the application form, a recent photo,

a double-sided copy of the ID card, a certificate of the education level, the curriculum vitae resuming the

artistic background of the candidate, (schools, studies, professors, …) a bank receipt or a bank statement

to the name of the candidate (for the granting of the prize).

Article 19

The candidate selected after the pre-selection will receive a notice of admission for the semi-final. The

time of passage will be communicated to him later.

Article 20

The prizes awarded for each category are :

Category A :

The first Prize worth 150,00€

The second Prize worth 100,00€

The third Prize worth 50,00€

Category B :

The first Prize worth 200,00€

The second Prize worth 150,00€

The third Prize worth 100,00€

A special prize worth 100,00€ shall be awarded by the Eric Feldbusch Foundation to the

candidate giving the best performance of the musical work "Phantasmes".

Category C :

The first Prize worth 500,00€ - Prize of the Minister Marie-Martine Schyns shall be awarded by

the Ministry of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation for the category "Young Talents" aged between

15 and 18 years.

The second Prize worth 250,00€ - Prize of the Friends of the Musical Academy of Woluwe-

Saint-Pierre.

A special Prize worth 250,00€ shall be awarded by the Servais Association to the candidate giving

the best performance of the imposed works by François Servais.

Category D :

The first Prize worth 1.000,00€ - Prize Edmont BAERT

The second Prize worth 500,00€

The third Prize worth 250,00€

A special prize worth 400,00€ shall be awarded by the Eric Feldbusch Foundation to the candidate

giving the best performance of the musical work "Mosaïque".

Article 21

The jury is sovereign and is entitled to decide whether a prize shall be awarded or not. It may consider

that the general level of the Competition is too low. The decisions of the jury are taken by a majority vote

- the President will have the deciding vote. The decisions are proclaimed immediately after the

deliberations of the jury by the President himself.

Article 22

A first Prize winner can no longer compete in the same category.

Article 23

The Direction of the Competition is entitled to make a non-commercial recording (sound or video) of the

performances presented by the candidates.

Article 24

The Direction of the Competition cannot be held responsible for any physical or material damage that

might occur due to the participation or the attendance in the Competition.

Article 25

Taking part in the Competition implies full and unconditional acceptance of the present rules. In case of

dispute, only the French version shall prevail.

Article 26

Any unforeseen circumstance or event arising from the present rules shall be settled by the Direction of

the Competition and its decisions will be final with no appeal.
