Priyadarshini – “Good to look at”
Man is born of woman ; he is flesh of her flesh and bone of her bone
Yet the irony is that we treat woman as a weakling , due to brute force
That is how , Priyadarshni welfare scheme was launched, to woman to stand up to say “ I am shakti & I demand respect”
‘May I help you?’
For every 1000 men, there are only 800 women
If this isn’t alarming, what is?
Ultimately, it's all about breaking barriers and changing mindsets so that women's
capabilities too can be tapped for the benefit of the tourism sector
The Undesirable Child
“Indian society, like most of the societies world over, is patriarchal. A man has to be reborn as a man to attain moksha (redemption). A man cannot attain moksha unless he has a son to light his funeral pyre. Also, it says a woman who gives birth to only daughters may be left in the eleventh year of marriage.”
Women’s Empowerment and Livelihood Programme in the Mid Gangetic Plains (MGP)
Priyadarshini Scheme
(Project Priyadarshini - christened after erstwhile Prime Minister Indira
Priyadarshini Gandhi)
Background Significant proportion in population.
Measures by Constitution and Government of India.
On 30.01.2006, Department of Women and Child Development was upgraded to an independent charge of Minister of State for Women and Child Development, marking an important milestone in this field.
The Programme is assisted by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Objective of the Priyadarshini
The objective is to empower in holistic and sustainable manner vulnerable groups of women and adolescent youth in the project area through promotion of improved livelihood opportunities through formation of women’s Self help Groups.
Important focus on addressing the women beneficiaries.
The whole idea behind Project Priyadarshini is to address the key issue of gender bias in our society.
The scheme is aimed at making the women self-reliant through their Self Help Groups(SHGs).
The project will focus on capacity building in the tourism sector.
The scheme certainly behaves well for women's employability in India. Even in the rural workforce, the balance is skewed - out of the 310 million workers, only 111 million are women.
Scope of Priyadarshini
The project will cover the District of Madhubani and Sitamarhi in Bihar and Shravasti, Bahraich, Rae Bareli and Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh and would be expanded to other districts as well.
To start with, two blocks each in the six districts, would be taken up under ''Priyadarshini' scheme involving 600 SHGs which would benefit about 9000 families.
