Children and youth today spend any-where from 5 to 7 waking hours a day in school. After the bell

rings, they must face a second round of duties, including homework. The pressures of high-stakes testing and increasing academic competition have prompted a rise in the amount of time children must spend on homework as-signments and study during out of school hours. Setting aside the issue of homework quality--that is, the appropriate purpose and nature of the assignments—homework overload can result in family stress and decreased student motiva-tion, especially if the homework is not monitored or is not engaging.

To remedy this, Grasp has designed a unique after-school experience for students in grades K-8 that focuses on personalized homework sup-port under the guidance of Learning Coaches. Our low coach to student ratio (max. 1:5) guarantees a high level of quality and accountability. As students complete their home-work, Learning Coaches teach key strategies ranging from organization and planning to studying for tests or learning new vocabulary. The focus is on the individual student’s needs, no matter where she is in her learning journey.

Because we know learning does not stop after the bell, we are committed to providing children with opportunities to extend their learning in joyful and supportive environments. This means that our students will have access to “curated” digital resources, supplies, study aids, and most important, to a caring and competent team of Learning Coaches whose mission is to unleash a joy of learning in their students.

For more information on Grasp locations, feel free to contact me at [email protected], or call at 786-763-3780.

I n 1938, Luther B. "L.B" Sommers and C.W. "Doc" Abele turned a successful summer camp into a res-idential proprietary boarding school for boys. This

year marks Miami Country Day School’s 75th year of outstanding education and longtime commitment to educating the whole child.Today, the school is a coeducational, nonprofit, in-terdenominational school with approximately 1100 students in Pre-K3 through 12th grade, representing approximately 32 countries. The 16-acre campus located near Miami Shores on the scenic Biscayne Canal boasts beau-tiful gardens, technology-integrated class-rooms, the Abess Center for Environmental Studies, the Koch Family Athletic Complex, the Nathan Hurst ’89 Amphitheater, and the Katherine E. Franco Center for Learning Resources. The Country Day experience is one that develops the intellectual, physical, aesthetic, social, emotional, and spiritual potentials of every student, every day. At a time when technological advances happen daily and the world as we know it keeps changing, Country Day is helping students develop not only the academic skills they will need in the future, but also a worldview they will use to con-tinually seek understanding and thrive in any situation.

Beyond the classroom, students have the opportunity to partici-pate in athletics, fine arts, and clubs. They are encouraged to be active in their community with each middle and upper school student giving at least 25 service hours of their time a year. Stu-dents can also participate in the Comprehensive Outdoor Educa-

tion Program, which provides students with academic, physical, and individual and group leadership de-

velopment, or take advantage of over 15 sum-mer camps and programs. The school’s College Counseling Office facili-tates the college admission process through individualized and personalized guidance so that students are able to matriculate to a col-

lege that is a good match for them. According-ly, graduates attend a wide variety of schools,

including highly selective colleges and universities throughout the country. Two-thirds of the graduating

class of 2013 qualified for a Florida Academic or Medallion Scholarship with Florida Bright Futures. What makes Country Day so unique is the combination of our mission, a diverse student body, dedicated faculty and staff, and a supportive community of parents and alumni.

BENEFITS oF PRIvATE EDUCATIoNFocus on values

Private schools focus on the essentials--that which provides purpose and meaning to life. The sad reality is that our society is marked by a great fear that fundamental values are coming undone. Within that context, a growing number of parents desperately desire the opportu-nity to choose schools whose primary purpose is to provide youngsters a sound moral and religious education. Private schools are the only schools we have that can assist parents with the religious and spiritual development of their children--a sphere of development so essential for their complete and proper upbringing. www.Capenet.org

Academic StandardsSt. John Neumann Catholic School’s curriculum is designed to meet the spiritual, intellectual and physical needs of the students. We be-lieve that children are individuals created in God’s image. Thus, inte-grated throughout the curriculum, respect for self and others is taught, in order to promote students’ development into self-disciplined, pro-ductive, moral members of society. We provide a demanding, yet well-balanced education with a strong emphasis on academics, while integrating the latest in technology. There is a commitment to the teaching of Catholic values in a safe, healthy and nurturing environ-ment of academic excellence which provides specialized academic programs that include advanced classes, enrichment, and a pull-out resource ESE program. Service is at the root of our values; therefore we also encourage and provide opportunities for our students to serve others through service projects based on community needs

Mission StatementSaint John Neumann Catholic School provides a quality Catholic ed-ucation, rooted in the Gospel, committed to academic excellence, faith formation, and service to others, developing active community members who model Christianity in both words and actions

Fidgetingboosts the brainBecause the natural behavior of children is fundamental in the design and

function of classroom chairs, students need furniture that can help them twist, rock back and forth, and swivel around. Resulting from normal sub-

conscious activities, fidgeting is a natural strategy the brain relies on to insure

the physical and mental survival during periods of sustained concentration and

immobility. Therefore by allowing small movements during class, teachers and

ergonomic furniture can increase a student’s ability to concentrate and develop

normally.

Unfortunately, our society is used to the constraints of tra- ditional furniture, so

it will take time for people to begin think- ing outside the box.

The design of the human working space is based on the knowledge that the body,

and particularly the growing body, is not made to sit still for long periods of time.

Because a sitting student is in a constant physical relationship with one’s chair,

school chairs need to be able to accommo- date a range of natural movements –

not hinder them. This need can be met by an ergonomic roll-swivel chair with the

seat surface that offers three dimensional movements.

The seat adjusts to all subconscious position changes of the student’s body and

simultaneously encourages the body to change itself. This active seating has a

natural rhythmic effect on the entire postural system.

Students aged...

6-10 can’t sit still more than 5 minutes on average.

11-15 can’t sit still more than 15 minutes on average.

15-20 can’t sit still more than 25 minutes on aver

A new nationwide survey reveals the extent to which mobile de-vices have become an inextricable part of students' and fami-lies' lives—while also indicating that parents see potential

benefits, and drawbacks, to those technology tools.By the time they enter high school, 51 percent of all students are carrying a smartphone to school with them every day, the survey of parents shows. Nearly a quarter of all students in K- 12, overall, are doing so, while 8 percent of students in grades 3-5 are bringing a smartphone to school. It's unclear, however, whether that tech usage results in benefits for students during the school day. Just 16 percent of all K-12 parents say their children's schools require students to use family-owned devices in classrooms.Nearly the same portion of parents, 17 percent, say their children's school requires students to use at least one portable device or mobile device in school. Those results suggest that "there are a significant portion of mobile devices that are just being turned off when students get to school, or are being used under the radar," Peter Grunwald, the president of Grunwald Associates LLC, told Education Week. His organization con-ducted the survey of parents, in coordination with the Learning First

Alliance. The survey found that parents were largely optimistic about the po-tential academic benefits of mobile devices. But they were also cau-tious about the pitfalls that come with using those tools.

What is Grasp Learning?

Grasp is an innovative learning company focused on "taking the work out of homework" for students and families.Grasp recognizes that daily homework and other academic and extra-curricular demands can cause stress, and that families need high quality solutions for their children. Grasp is that solution. We focus on providing students with the strategies and skills that underpin learning in general. As such, we teach them how to learn. Over time our students become independent and confident learners who enjoy the process and the benefits of effort.

What is Grasp Learning's mission?

The Mission of Grasp is to unleash a joy of learning, promote pride in academic accomplishment and reduce family stress by taking the "work" out of homework.

What inspired you to create Grasp Learning?

According to a survey released in September by Google and the National Center for Family Research, half of parents in the US can't help their children with homework. Our curriculum team immersed itself in current research to design effective, family-friendly solutions to this problem. We learned that "out of school" time is key in helping to support all types of students, not only struggling children. Grasp is a learning community where children not only complete their homework under the guidance of Learning Coaches, but also build learning resiliency, which is highly correlated to academic achievement: the ability to return to tasks despite past failures.

Who developed Grasp Learning?

Our team is made up of educators, psychologists, and other professionals who want to make a difference in children's lives.

What differentiates Grasp from other tutoring programs?

Many factors distinguish us from typical tutoring programs. We look at the overall needs of the child, and focus on the process of learning, not just the content. In short, we teach the thinking and planning skills that characterize solid learning, while integrating 21st century skills through blended learning (digital and in person); digital literacy; and motivational tools to engage learners in the process.

What would you say are the biggest

concerns in the minds of parents?

Parent concerns vary. From experience, we know many parents can't

handle the subject matter or learning approaches required by the

classroom teacher. Other parents don't have the time, or are juggling

many responsibilities. Our experience and focus groups tell us that

frustration over homework is a family concern. The range of concerns

goes from an emphasis on better grades, to student confusion and

disinterest, stress over performance expectations, and in many cases,

boredom. Grasp helps students complete assignments, plan ahead for

studying, and preparing for short- and long-term projects. Children leave

a Grasp session with a sense of satisfaction and completion.

What is the cost of your program?

Cost is $30 per 75 minute session, with most families signing up for 2 or

3 sessions per week.
