Expertise in particle detectors, DAQ and digital systems is required. The post will be based at MANDELA (UWC), which has the aim of developing state-of-the-art multi- channel particle-detector systems that may be coupled with the newly acquired GAMKA Spectrometer at iThemba LABS or elsewhere. The chosen applicant will spend at least one month per year at UniZulu supporting their Nuclear Environmental Programme. MANDELA projects involve the development of a DAQ digital system and state-of-the-art multi-channel silicon and CsI arrays that will complement our Nuclear Structure and Nuclear Astrophysics programs. Applications for fellowships are considered on a competitive basis. The award is for two years (1 + 1 years, renewable upon progress work) and valued at a competitive R280,000 per year. Funding is provided by the Science and Technology Facilities Council in the UK as per initiative of the University of York and the South African Universities of UWC and UniZulu. The UWC Group is involved in Coulomb-excitation, nuclear lifetime, K600 spectrometer and beta-decay programs ongoing at iThemba LABS (Cape Town), MLL (Munich, Germany), RCNP (Osaka, Japan), TRIUMF (Vancouver, Canada) and HIE-ISOLDE (CERN) and is mainly composed of black South African students (Honours, MSc and PhD levels) from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. The motivation of working in such an enthusing environment at UWC, and the exciting prospect of developing the new MANDELA facility presents a superior opportunity.
