In today’s economy, we are challenged to do more with less. In the laboratory this translates to processingmore samples with fewer analysts while spending less money on instrumentation, consumables and supplies. Often, when you compare analytical instruments, you find you must choose between performance and price; seldom will you find one that offers both. On the other hand, if you focus on your analytical needs, you may discover a product that meets your requirements at an attractive price; the Prism ICP from Teledyne Leeman Labs.

Surprisingly, many laboratories have very similar needs. Most want an easy-to-use ICP with useful automation that supports a high degree of unattended operation along with easy-to-learn software. To get accurate results reported on time, labs ask for short warm-up times, fewer interferences, high samplethroughput and good long-term stability.

Let’s face it: any lab manager understands an ICP only earns its keep during operation; durability anddependability mean better productivity with less time spent on maintenance and repair.

Practicality and Performance

What do you need in an ICP?

A High Performance ICP withoutthe High Price

It is the design integrity and performance of the spectrometer thathave the greatest impact on resolution, wavelength range, stability, immunity to stray light and detection limits. See why Prism deliversexceptional performance in all matrices.

Axial, Radial or Dual View Prism is available in axial, radial or dual view configurations; eachequipped with a computer controlled source mirror for automatedoptimization. In dual view mode, the mirror automatically selectsthe view and optimizes plasma viewing position in each mode. Itensures you are running at peak performance all of the time.

Drift-Free AnalysisPrism treats the plasma torch as an optical component. WithPrism’s Image Stabilized ICP, the torch is mounted directly to thepolychromator and is held in place with the same integrity as anyother optical component. This eliminates drift in the position ofthe plasma relative to the entrance slit and contributes to Prism’sunmatched long-term stability. Superior stability means fewer QCfailures and higher productivity.

The component most critical to the analytical performance of any ICP is the optical spectrometer.

Low Stray Light for Exceptional Detection Limitsin Real World Matrices Prism’s Long Focal Length Spectrometer results in significantlylower stray light levels than other ICPs. This translates into lower detection limits and superior performance in real world matrices.

Unmatched Image Quality The resolution of a spectrometer is not only dependent on thecharacteristics of its grating, input slit and focal length, it is alsodependent on the quality of the image (focus) at the detector surface. Prism’s Echelle spectrometer uses advanced torroidaloptics and a long focal length (800 mm) to ensure unmatchedimage quality and resolution across the focal plane. Many shortfocal length spectrometers suffer from significant degradation ofimage quality and resolution as one moves away from the centerline of the detector. The plot below shows that Prism’smeasured resolution is nearly identical to its theoretical resolution at all positions across the detector surface.

Extensive Wavelength Coverage

Prism’s high dispersion Echelle spectrometer and Composite,Programmable Array Detector (C-PAD) provide continuous wavelength coverage from 175-400nm while the remaining areacontains active regions for commonly used visible wavelengths. The C-PAD detector has innovative in-pixel* processing and is fullyprogrammable so it can adapt to changing sample matrices andnew analytical requirements quickly.

Prism’s measured resolution is nearly equivalent to its theoretical resolution across the detector surface (i.e. wavelength range).

*In-Pixel ProcessingC-PAD transfers the charge between two storage locations within each pixel, so it can measure the signal at the pixel ofinterest without affecting the signal collected in any other pixel.C-PAD reads each pixel non-destructively, so small signals areprocessed at their optimum signal to noise while large signalsare processed quickly to prevent saturation. This approach isfast, provides wide dynamic range and optimum signal to noisefor all signals. This means you will complete your analysisquickly and with fewer over-range measurements.

In contrast, charge coupled devices (CCDs) move charge fromthe pixels of interest (analyte peak or background) to a remoteamplifier to measure signal. As this transfer occurs, all pixelsmust be processed or the signal is lost. This approach is slowand provides inherent limitations to the dynamic range and signal to noise ratios that can be obtained.

This table shows the scattered light from a 2% calcium solutionhas almost no impact at primary arsenic wavelength (193.759nm).
