The Work Programme addresses the entire set of issues through 4 inter-linked elements:

1. Advanced vehicle/vessel and infrastructure concepts

2. Standardised design and manufacturing systems

3. An Integrated Transport System aiming to:promote modal shift to cleaner and safer

transport meansincrease safety and capacity of infrastructure

4. A collaborative research system assured by theEuropean Research Area (ERA)

Gradually break the link between growth of transport and economic growth, principally in three ways:

• Re-balance of transport modes• Eliminate bottlenecks• Place users at the heart of transport policy

Objectives of the White Paper

Page 10: Priority 1.6.2 : Sustainable Surface Transport Outline presentation 12 NOVENBER 2002 HEYSEL,BRUSSELS Research, technological development and integration

Objective I.1: New technologies and concepts for vehicles/vessels and infrastructure

•Objectives:·Maintain or even improve the quality and efficiency of transport mobility·Put on course the transition towards an environmentally caring transport system based on renewable fuels (20% fuel substitution by 2020)

•Focus:·To smooth the transition from present situation towards an eco-friendly transport system (KYOTO, EURO V)·To link research on vehicles with long term prospects

on energy supply
