Principles of Compositional Design

The principles of design are the laws or recipe for a good work of art.  The principles combine the elements of art and design to create an aesthetic placement of things that will produce a good design.

1. Movement- the path the viewer's eye follows throughout an artwork. Movement is caused by using elements of art to guide the viewer's eyes throughout the artwork

2. Repetition (Rhythm, Pattern)-The recurrence of elements within a piece: colors, lines, shapes, values, etc. Any element that occurs is generally echoed, often with some variation to keep interest.

3. Balance: The equilibrium of all forces involved. Symmetrical balance: Arrangement of elements that are similar on either side of a vertical axis. They may suggest exact equity but are varied sufficiently to prevent visual monotony. Asymmetrical balance: Arrangement of the visual units on either side of a vertical axis that are not identical but are placed to create a “felt” equilibrium of the visual space.

7. Proportion- involves the relationship of size between objects- one part is relative to another-relationship between one element to another

8. Harmony- The adaptation of parts to one another so as to form a coherent whole.Harmony is achieved through the sensitive balance of variety and unity

9. Contrast- Change of stress and accent or emphasis to set off elements against each other.

6. Unity- The whole or total effect of a work of art that results from the combination of all of its component parts. Typically, a unified work is one in which the elements all work harmoniously together in support of the concept -ties elements together, how they fit and belong together. Unity helps the design to be seen as one design instead of randomness all around your design.

5. Dominance/Emphasis-focal point The relative importance of certain elements above others in the same composition. It establishes focus and supports unity by subordinating some elements or ideas in relation to others.-by contrast-isolation-placement
