FEBRUARY 2019
WALKERTON WILDCAT CONNECTION!
Principal's Report Winter has hit us and we will have a few days to make up. As I write this, we are expecting sub-zero temperatures a few days this week. PLEASE be sure your children are dressed appropriately for the weather - whatever it may be. The first semester was a great one. Students and staff have all been working hard and are gaining a lot of ground in all areas. We have taken our practice tests for the state assessments (which are in April) and students have done a great job. Our 5/6th grade girls basketball players and our wrestlers have been practicing hard and are looking forward to their first game/match. Not quite sure when that will be with the weather predictions. Be sure to look through the rest of the newsletter for some important information and upcoming events. TIM DAVIS
MESSAGE FROM YOUR COUNSELOR
I will continue in this newsletter to provide information from STEP Systematic Training for Effective Parenting. In previous newsletters information was shared about misbehavior that may be an attempt to meet certain needs such as attention or a power struggle, and the importance of setting clear limits and giving choices within those limits. An example of this may look like the following: Nine-year old Corey would leave his muddy shoes on when he came inside. Dad said, “Corey, please remove your shoes, or you’ll need to clean the tracks from the floor. You decide.” One day, Corey didn’t remove his shoes. So Dad handed him a sponge and a bucket of water.
In this month’s article I would like to address the importance encouragement in parenting. Encouragement helps children grow in self-esteem. It is a way to show children they belong and are accepted, capable, and loved. Nobody is perfect and we need to develop ways to encourage children that they are capable of making better choices. We can start by noticing your child’s efforts and communicating that you appreciate your child. To follow up with our previous example, you might say to Nine year old Corey, “Thanks for remembering to take off your boots.” All children have strengths-qualities and talents that make them special. Effective parenting notices and builds on these strengths. Words of encouragement may include saying things like, “Thanks, that was a big help.” “You worked hard on that.” “You are getting better at fractions all the time.” or “You did it.” Our parenting actions can also communicate encouragement. A nod, a wink, or a smile sends a message of encouragement. So does listening without interrupting, a hug, or pat on the back.
A final word about encouragement. It is very important as parents to encourage yourself. Having patience with ourselves as we try to do our best is very important. There is no such thing as a perfect parent. It is important that you set realistic goals and to stay positive with yourself. Encourage yourself for any small changes you make towards improved parenting.
I hope you find this information helpful, and I encourage you to contact me if you want to talk or need any assistance. In our next article we will look at the importance of listening and talking to your child.
Sincerely, Rich Stauffer Walkerton Elementary School Counselor
Celebrate Dr Seuss’ birthday on Friday, March 1 by wearing a Dr Seuss shirt, a Cat in the Hat hat, or another Dr Seuss costume! It will be 115 years since he was born. He wrote 44 books for children. Which is your favorite? Green Eggs and Ham? Grinch Who Stole Christmas? Horton Hears a Who? Or maybe another?
