29th November 2016 #38 Dear Parents Congratulations to the students who participated in the Triathlon on Sunday morning at Tobruk pool. Our students did extremely well. The Edge Hill Tri Academy has been very successful this year and we are pleased to extend the initia- tive to 60 students in 2017. The squad will be made up of 30 members in the per- formance squad and 30 students in the development squad. Well done to all the staff and students who have trained so hard this year. Last night the Performing Arts Centre was overflowing with families as we celebrated the achievements of our school’s instrumental music and choral program. It has been a very successful year with participation in Fanfare, Cairns Eisteddfod and school performances. Last Saturday over 100 members of the school choir participated in a concert at St Monica’s Cathedral. Our students have had amazing opportunities this year and it is rewarding to see how enthusiastically our students participate and the quality of their performances. Our music staff of Ms Hari, Mrs Richardson, Ms Ward, Mr Christodoulides, Mr McMenamin and Mr Barbagal- lo are amazing. At the School Council meeting last week we endorsed the establishment of Edge Hill Academies. This initiative will provide opportunities for students to go above and beyond what is possible in the normal school curriculum. The Academies will offer extension programs in music, physical education and STEM in the first in- stance. Information on the Academies is available on our school web page. As we look forward to the 2017 school year it is important that you advise the school if you are returning to school after the formal start of the school year on Monday 23rd January. This will ensure that you are able to maintain your enrolment. If you are leaving our school at the end of this year we would appreciate you advising the office as soon as possible. Semester Report Cards will be given out on the last day of school on Friday 9th December. Classes for 2017 will also be on display on the last day of school. Don’t forget end of year Disco on Thursday 1st December all details are on page 3 of the Newsletter. This week students for Prep in 2017 have been attending Prep Open Mornings. PREP Our days in Prep are numbered however there still seems quite a few things to do. This week we will be greeting new Preps with our current students helping them to navigate the classroom rituals and activities every morning. In addition groups of our current Preps will spend an hour or so in a Year 1 classroom, experiencing some new learning in preparation for 2017. Our swimming carnivals will be held on Thursday and Friday afternoon this week - a lovely hour to celebrate our achievements in the pool. You are very welcome to come along to this non-competitive event. On matters of house-keeping, any home readers or library books can be returned this week for the annual stocktake. We are always so grateful for your support.

are excited to be participating in a drama workshop this week. They are happily discovering their individual talents with performing in front of their class and role playing in a variety of characters and roles. Please remember that the End of Year Disco will be held this Thursday at 5:30-6:45pm. The children are encouraged to participate in the dancing and join DJ Dean Ashton with games. We would appreciate that all home readers are returned this week so Mrs Skinner can organise and amend current stock levels for 2017. Children are encouraged to keep reading and are reminded that although the school library has ceased all borrowing, the children can still borrow books from the public library.

Musical Notes

On Saturday students in the EHSS Choir performed at the Classical Favourites Concert at St Monica’s Cathedral. It was a wonderful venue to sing in and the students made a beautiful sound. As well as performing they were able to see some fantastic performances by the Cairns Concert Orchestra and items by local classical musicians. Last night we had the Celebration of Music where we heard performances by the choir, string orchestras and concert bands. The items performed showed the wonderful work and progress students have made in their ensembles in 2016. A special congratulations to the following students who did the most practise on their instruments and received awards. Strings Grade 3 –Zoe Turnour Grade 4 – Mikoto Kamata Grade 5 – Evie McMenamin Grade 6 – Eoghan Kuiper Brass and Woodwind Year 4 – Summer Warner Year 5 – Juno Hoshino Year 6 – Lian Walsh Percussion Grade 4 – Taichi Sato Joel Wilson Grade 5 – Skye Ozaki-Rogerson Grade 6 – Finn George-Newman

CHOIR, STRING ORCHESTRAS AND CONCERT BAND REHEARSALS HAVE FINISHED FOR THIS YEAR.

If your child has arranged for holiday hire of an instrument they are to see Mr Christo, Mrs Richardson or Miss Hari for a form (this applies to students who learn larger instruments)

Next week, Wednesday 7th December in the EHSS PAC at 2pm we have the Choral Concert for students in Year 1, 2 and 4. Students will be singing a range of songs that they have been learning in their classroom music lessons. Looking forward to seeing lots of Year 1, 2 and 4 parents at this free concert.

Library News All borrowing has finished for the year and it is great to see so many students returning their books. Students with overdue loans will receive a notice and we encourage you to look for these books and return them to the Library. Your child will not be able to borrow next year if they have outstanding items. In the event that the book has been lost payment can be made at the Front Office. The end of the year is often a time for reflection. This year we were interested to see how many items were lent across the whole school. A whopping 48 784 items have been scanned out to students and staff during 2016. This includes home readers, guided readers and kits in addition to our general library books. We have enjoyed seeing so many families enjoying the Library space this year. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday – take the opportunity to visit some of the Cairns Council Libraries. They are a great place to escape the heat as well as grab some holiday reading.
