PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parent(s):
It’s time to get out those warm coats, scarves, gloves and boots to prepare for winter!
November weather is upon us and that reminds us to anticipate Student Council’s Hallowe’en
Happenings Dance and Pumpkin Carving Contest, Remembrance Day activities, Student Progress
Report Cards (coming home November 1st). Of course, there are many more activities at Green
Glade Senior P.S. that will be referred to in other sections of this Newsletter. Creating a
vibrant, active school is one goal that we strive to achieve in many ways. Our mission, vision,
values and collective commitments keep us focused on our central purpose – student success –
“be the best you can be”. At Green Glade Sr. P.S., we are committed to helping every child build
a foundation for future success in our ever changing world. The teachers strive to ensure that
all the children have the essential skills of reading, writing, mathematics and co-operation while
developing a positive self-esteem and love of learning.
We believe that learning is a partnership between home and school. At school, the teachers
work with the children on many skills. At home, there are many ways that you as parents or
guardian can help your child:
You can read with your child at home.
You can read and talk with your child about what he/she has read.
You can make sure that your child has a quiet place to do his/her homework.
You can ask your child about homework and help with it if needed.
It is helpful to talk to your child about school every day and to talk to your child’s teacher
regularly, not only at report time.
Working together supports all of us at the school and you at home to help our children become
life-long learners. Thank you again for your on-going support of your child(ren)’s learning
throughout the year. Parental input and questions are always welcome and the next opportunity
to do this will be at the School Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12th at 7:00 PM in the Library.

FROM THE OFFICE
PARENT VISITS We encourage strong parent/teacher communication. In most cases, this is best facilitated
through the student agenda. From time to time, it may be necessary for a more in-depth
conversation with the teacher(s). If this is the case, please call the school to arrange for the
teacher to call you and set up a convenient meeting time. Please do not drop into the school at
the end of the day with the expectation that the teacher will be available. Please call ahead and
book an appointment time to avoid frustration. When parents visit the school, they are
requested to come to the office first to get a visitor identification tag. Your cooperation in this
is much appreciated.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
Students will be presenting our Remembrance Day Ceremony this year. Please
join us on Monday, November 11th at 10:00 A.M. in the gym. Poppies will be
available for students to wear. A coin donation will be solicited. The poppies are
worn on the left front of the persons’ garment closest to the heart in
remembrance of those fallen. Donations will be collected from students and poppies distributed
on November 11th. If you plan to attend our ceremony, we would suggest that young children are
better left at home with a care-giver, as this is a very solemn occasion.
TERRY FOX WALK- KEEPING THE SPIRIT ALIVE! Thanks to our energetic walkers, runners and hikers here at Green Glade,
our school raised $5,543.85 for cancer research. We had perfect
weather for the event – cool and sunny. Our assembly earlier this month
featuring cancer survivor Daisy Harminck helped put a human face on the
campaign. The Terry Fox story has all the character attributes that serve
to both inspire and model for our students- courage, giving to others,
pursuing a dream and perseverance. It was a perfect event to kick-off the
new school year! The students also dedicated the walk to someone in their life who has been
affected by cancer. Students walked through the Village of Clarkson underneath the Green
Glade Sr. P.S. flag for nearly two hours. Their behaviour was excellent (and enthusiastic)
throughout the event. This was a very successful event for both our students and the few
parents who joined us for the walk. The Walk was followed up with a spirited Spirit Day
highlighted by a music concert, barbeque and a “bouncy” obstacle course, and lots of other
activities- and all for a good cause! Many thanks to Mr. Ferrin and his committee for all the
planning, support, and leadership to make this a very successful event for all!
SOMETHING NEW IN FUNDRAISING Your School Council is again trying a new fund-raising idea this year. We will be asking for a one-
time donation of only $50.00 to support students learning in the areas of classroom libraries,
science equipment, math resources, and Grade 8 Graduation. Please look for the brochure
package being sent home next week. Please support your child’s learning and help us reach our
goal of $5,000.00!
EXTRA SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS In middle school, extra support may be assigned by teachers or the office for a variety of
reasons. At Green Glade, we have lots of support available. In some cases, remedial sessions are
scheduled during lunch time, but there may be occasions when it is necessary to have your child
come early or remain after regular dismissal time to access remedial support or work on
behaviour management issues. Counting On You sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
still have openings! The sessions run from 2:45 until 4:00 pm and are supervised by Green Glade
staff. No formal lessons take place during the session, but teachers are available to help out our
students with daily homework and/or long-term assignments. Also, Homework.ca is now available
for students in Grades 7 and 8 who require extra help with mathematics. The Ministry of
Education site has live tutoring, as well as on-line lessons on specific math concepts. Use your
child’s OEN number on the top right-hand corner of their report card to sign-in. Register at
ontario.ca/HomeworkHelp. Your support in our efforts to assist your child is valued. If you
have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS We were thrilled to kick-off our school year with our first School Council Meeting
last month. Many topics including Student Success Planning, School Council
responsibilities and staffing updates were discussed.
If you have any questions & concerns about the Peel Board of Education and/ or
current educational issues, please plan to attend. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 12th.
Congratulations to our newly elected School Council:
Catherine Fitzpatrick, (Chairperson), Fouzia Reza, and Randeep Singh Virdi
Principal-Norm Black, Teacher Representative- Greg Ferrin
We welcome any and all parents to our next meeting on Tuesday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m.
ART CLUB ENTERS NATIONAL POSTER COMPETITION On November 11, in the 11th hour of the 11th day, we take a moment of
silence to remember those who have died for our country. The Art Club has
been busy during the month of October designing a poster for Canadian
Royal Legion based on the subject of REMEMBRANCE. All members of
the club have been challenged to demonstrate their initiative and create a
poster on this theme. The Poster Contest, part of the Legion's Youth and
Education program, is meant to foster an understanding of the sacrifices
made on our behalf by many young men and women in World Wars I and II, and the Korean War
and peace keeping missions.
The entry may be either drawn in Black and White or Colour. The two types will be judged in
separate contests. When are the contests held? Contests are held each year just prior to
Remembrance Day at our local Legion branch in Port Credit. Winners of local contests have the
opportunity to compete against other branch level winners at district, provincial and national
levels. The opportunity to have their “talents” judged at the National level, with the prize being
to represent Canada’s youth at the National Remembrance Day Service in Ottawa, is an added
incentive for them to participate. In previous years Green Glade has always won at the
branch level and made our way to provincials. Since our posters will be at the Legion for
Remembrance Day and not be on display, a special power-point presentation will showcase each
poster that the Art Club members have submitted. This power-point will be on the school
website if any parents miss the chance to see our assembly. The Royal Canadian Legion Poster
Contest provides all students in Canada the opportunity to participate in a project, that not only
provides them with an outlet for their art and literary talents, but also teaches them the
significance of Remembrance. Our students have been very reflective this month and it shows in
their symbols and illustrations, as well as motivational messages in their artwork.
At Green Glade, our student’s strive to be Ambassadors of Peace and Remembrance!
THE SPORTS REPORT Both our girls and boys Flag Football teams saw action this past week at the annual South Peel
tournament. Both teams braved the cooler temperatures and demonstrated lots of school spirit.
The boys competed very well against 27 other schools, many of them with 800 to 1,000 students.
The girls won 2 of the 5 games and lost the remainder by less than a touchdown. Both teams
competed well and Coach LiYing reported, “We were the happiest team at the tournament!”
Later this month is the South Peel Fun Run hosted by Green Glade at Jack Darling Park. If you
have a moment, drop by the park on Monday, November 28th and cheer on our hard working
runners!
JELLO ANYONE! Our Grade 8 science students were busy creating some educational and edible cell models this
past week. The jello was set at home and assembled in class under the scientific eye of our Mr.
LiYing. Students used fruit, candy, vegetables, eggs and onions to represent the organelles of
the cell- le paroi cellulaire, la membrane cellulaire, les chloroplastes, les corps golgi, les vacuoles,
and les ribosomes. This hands-on and tasty learning task makes associations and relationships
with scientific information using a highly motivating and visual medium.
OUR NEW AND IMPROVED WINIT PROGRAM To prepare our students to be global citizens in the 21st century, the skills of cooperation,
responsibility, teamwork and perseverance will be critical. To support our students to become
well-rounded and critical thinkers, we have re-vamped our Winit to reflect these values. The
students will earn Winits through high achievement in academic subjects and Learning Skills, as
well as through club and team participation. Community service Winits are also available again
this year! Students will then assess what category the Winit falls under. The categories are;
Success, Perseverance, Integrity, Responsibility, Initiative and Teamwork. For Grade 8 students, 15
Winits are required, 1 Winit in each SPIRIT category. Graduating after 2 years, 30 Winits will be
required with at least 2 Winits in each category. For further details, check out our web-site.

ROCK CLIMBING WAS ROCKIN’ As most of you already know, this was the month that students let their inner monkey out! Green
Glade had the company 'Junglesport Inc.' come into the school to bring their fun, exciting and
safe rock climbing walls, ropes and equipment for the students to enjoy. Our two instructors for
these activities were Jared Fishel and Jon Fairley. They kept the kids excited and moving.
Junglesport has been in business for ten years in the province of Ontario and Quebec. They have
run programs for over 100 000 students in schools, as well as various summer camps. They
ensure that the structures are fully engineered and self-supporting for a safe experience that
is UIAA approved. This program is available to primary schools all the way to high school.
Junglesport came to Green Glade for 5 days, and all of the students who climbed, could honestly
say they'd want to do it again next year. The price was fifteen dollars to climb for each student
on the five day program. If you wish to contact Junglesport, you can visit their website at
www.Junglesport.ca or call 1-888-541-3343. Junglesport also has a Facebook and Twitter
account if you want to check them out there.

Register for Extended French by Jan. 31, 2014
Are you thinking of registering your child for Extended French (EF)? For the 2014-15 school
year, parents must register children for entry into grade 7 Extended French by 4 p.m. on
Friday, January 31, 2014.
The registration date will help determine the number of grade 7 Extended French classes at
each school for the following September. The board can then hire the appropriate number of
qualified staff. As well, because the registration date happens earlier, the intention is that no
new EF classes will be created at reorganization time in September, so the level of student
disruption will be reduced.
Registration
Registration for EF will be done through an online registration form that will be
available on Nov. 22 at www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration
What is the EF program like? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the program?
How can you tell if it is the right choice for your child?
One way to help answer these questions is to attend the information meeting at the EF school
your child would attend. Meet the principal and some of the teachers from the school. Hear
about the program and have an opportunity to ask questions. Talk with some parents whose
children are now in the program. A parent information night will be held at each EF school in
Peel on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
How to get more information
Visit the Peel board website—www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration.

Register for French Immersion by Jan. 31, 2014
Are you thinking of registering your child for French Immersion (FI)? For the 2014-15
school year, parents must register children for entry into grade 1 FI by 4 p.m. on
Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.
Registration for FI will be done through an online registration form that will be
available on Nov. 22 at www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration.
What is the FI program like? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the program?
How can you tell if it is the right choice for your child?
One way to help answer these questions is to attend the information meeting at the FI school
your child would attend. Meet the principal and some of the teachers from the school. Hear
about the program and have an opportunity to ask questions. Talk with some parents whose
children are now in the program. A parent information night will be held at each FI school in
Peel on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
Registration process
A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for
students entering grade 1 FI. If the number of students registered by the deadline exceeds the
number of spots in grade 1 FI, a lottery system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into
the grade 1 FI program.
All students who make the registration deadline will be placed in a lottery and assigned a rank using
a computerized random selection process. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served
basis. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again
in rank order, on the school's waitlist.
Some students will be automatically placed in grade 1 FI. To find out if your child does not need to
participate in the lottery, and for more information about the lottery and waitlist processes, visit
www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration.
