Principal’s Message
Thank you to all students, parents and community members for their support during the first weeks of school. We could not have had such a smooth beginning without your cooperation. We are very excited to be back and are looking forward to a great school year.
If you missed the Lakewood High School Open House on August 20th, we want to make you are aware of two important initiatives this school year.
First, we are pleased to introduce Naviance Succeed and Family Connection, web-based college & career planning software designed especially for students and parents. Family Connection is a comprehensive website that you and your child can use to help in making decisions about colleges and careers. Family Connection is linked with College Planner, a service that is used in the guidance office to track and analyze data about college and career plans. College Planner provides up-to-date information that is specific to Lakewood High School.
Family Connection will allow you and your child to:
● Get involved in the planning and advising process – Build a resume, complete on-line surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers
● Research colleges – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted in the past
● Sign up for college visits – Find out which colleges are visiting our school and sign up to attend those sessions
To visit our school’s Family Connection site, use your web browser to connect to: http://connection.naviance.com/lakewoodhs or
look for the link on the LHS Home Page and Under “For Parents” Tab.
Passwords and detailed instructions on how to login and navigate Naviance are being mailed to your home. If you have any questions please contact the guidance department at 216-529-4032.
The guidance department will be holding a Naviance Parent and Student help session in Lecture Hall 2 on September 9th at 6:30pm.
Secondly, this year on October 14th, all sophomores
and interested juniors will be taking the PSAT during
the school day free of charge. October 14th will be a modified schedule day. Please look for more details soon, but mark your calendars!
The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are:
● To receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
● To see how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
● To enter the competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (grade 11).
● To help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
● To receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.
We are very excited this year to begin adding more tools so students and parents can begin exploring college and career options at any grade level.

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! It’s going to be an exciting year as we watch our three new elementary buildings
rise to completion and the high school make great progress toward its new wings. Academically, we started off our school
year with a professional development day that will help our staff provide the best instructional methods and education
technology tools to your students.
The District has adopted a number of new goals for this school year with the top goal always being improved student
achievement. Please take a moment to read these goals, which when accomplished will help continue us on our path to
becoming one of the top 20 Districts in the state.
2015-2016 District Goals
I want to take a moment to thank our staff members who worked through the summer whether it be getting our schools
ready for students, preparing our technology needs for our students and staff, teaching our students in summer school or
keeping our administrative offices running. Your efforts help us tremendously in getting our school year off to a smooth
start and our students prepared to learn on Day 1.
I look forward to working with students, parents and staff to produce another year of growth and learning.

Your PTA dues and Painless Project dollars at work…
Fresh Start Ice Cream Social – we purchase and serve ice cream to incoming freshmen and their families at this
orientation event in August.
Staff Appreciation Breakfast – a great breakfast to show our great staff how much we appreciate them
Student Conferences – a hearty dinner, before conferences (so the staff has time to eat and keep their strength up to
answer all our questions).
Educator of the Year – thank-you gifts and appreciation award to the best of our best. One teacher is chosen each year
in addition to one “Helping Hands” recipient, recognizing our wonderful administrative staff. Which is then sent to our
PTA Council and are recognized at that level.
Senior Recognition Day – reception for seniors to sign yearbooks & say farewells to their high school friends.
After Prom – financial support to keep our prom goers safe and happy
Reflections – Reflections is a National PTA sponsored Art Contest that covers art, photography and literature. Each year,
hundreds of Lakewood student from all grades participate to showcase their artistic talents. LHS PTA supplies our school
winners with a reception or a small token of recognition.
The Lakewood High School PTA contributes to the H2O Camp Fund, the PTA Council Scholarship Fund (each year
PTA awards four $1000 scholarships to LHS seniors), Pumpkin Palooza and the Speed Awareness Campaign (those
Brake for Kids signs). This past year we also contributed to H2O’s big fund raiser, The Tributary Bash.
Ranger Roundup – the PTA puts this newsletter together & ensures that the newsletter is complete & on time.
Special Projects – this past school year, the PTA donated money to the high school math department to purchase
calculators.
And this list doesn't even begin to address the National and State PTA organizations' child advocacy programs and
available information, resources and training.
What is a Painless Project??
IT’S A BAKE SALE…..without the baking! IT’S A CARNIVAL…..without the planning!
IT’S A BOOK, T-SHIRT, OR MAGAZINE SALE…..without the selling!
IT’S A WAYS AND MEANS PROJECT to support PTA activities…without the work!
And by which all parents can support PTA activities benefiting their students!
So please take a minute to donate the cost of a cake and frosting, or the price of a paperback book, and send in your
Painless Project donation today, along with your PTA dues to LHS, with your student, or mail it to: Lakewood High
School PTA at 14100 Franklin Blvd.
Then….sit back, put your feet up, have a cup of coffee
and forget the muss and fuss of a Ways and Means project because…
IT’S PAINLESS!

Guidance News
Dear Students and Parents,
The Lakewood High School Guidance Department welcomes new and returning students back to school this
year! As a reminder, guidance counselors are here to help students put plans into action. The LHS Guidance
Department consists of 5 counselors and our secretary, Mrs. Debra Diamond, who are here to support and
help students reach their full potential. This year, we give a warm welcome to Mrs. Roberta Marcinek, who has
joined the LHS Guidance Department. Mrs. Marcinek is new to the high school, but not new to Lakewood, as
she has several years of experience from elementary schools and LCA.

staff to use for college and career planning. Naviance
features a Family Connections portal to help with college
matches, career and personality inventories, scholarship
links, and so much more. The live website link for
Naviance can be found on our webpage or at

If students or parents did not receive log-ins at Open

CAREER SHADOWING…
WE’RE WAITING FOR YOU!!
Lakewood High School offers sophomores, juniors and seniors an opportunity to spend a day
“career shadowing” a professional in a specific career field that is of interest to them. Shadows
include but are not limited to: engineers, dentists, lawyers, police officers, nurses, physical
therapists, fire fighters…the options are endless!
The Career Shadowing Experience offers students exposure to an occupation which they may wish

requirements, expectations, education and training required in their career choices.
ALSO—IF YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO SHARE YOUR CAREER WITH ONE OF OUR
STUDENTS PLEASE CALL US!!!
For additional information and applications please contact Mrs. Ellen Pozek, Career/Enrollment Specialist West Shore Career-Technical Office Room B101- Phone 216-529-4346
Hello Parents,
This is the time of year when our photography students are scrambling to
find cameras for photography. The required camera is a 35mm Camera-
A single reflex camera (SLR), this is a very popular camera. Please check
with neighbors, friends, or family who may be able to donate this
equipment. The cameras that are donated will go to the LHS photography
program for students to rent out during the semester. We are also looking
for darkroom timers. All the cameras and timers donated will benefit the
students!
Thanks,
Ms. Dayna Kreider
