Principal’s Message
Congratulations and farewell to our 2019 graduating class of Year 12 students. I have been so proud of how they have conducted themselves in recent weeks. The commitment shown to complete assessment, maintain high standards and support each other to the finish line has been fantastic. Many teachers have gone above and beyond in their support of our students to ensure all work is completed. Our support staff who often sit behind the scenes have been putting in extra to make sure results were published today and the Indoor Sport Centre set up for the farewell dinner this evening. I am pleased to announce that 100% of our year 12 students have achieved a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) or Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA). Heath Barry, Year 12 had a remarkable result finishing second in the Double Team Racing in the Taiwan International Gymkhana Prize last week. Congratulations to Couper Smith on your selection in the Queensland U15 Golf team. Best wishes for success at the Australian Championships. Ebony Burchill-Schonenberger and Ellie Zillfleisch have had the most amazing experience in Sydney this week along with teacher Thomas Vinter as part of the Big Ideas Forum. The experience of our students working with scientists on real world problems has opened up future connections and networking opportunities. Thank you to our emergency services for the realistic response to a ‘car accident’, as part of our Year 12 program. You may have heard the ambulance, police and fire truck sirens along with helicopter landing as they arrived on Thursday. The follow up debrief and talk aimed to raise awareness around safe driving and the impact accidents can have. Our Industrial Technology and Design area has now been fully gutted, new concrete laid outside and preparations made to start the new renovations. The temporary classrooms have allowed students to continue participating in these practical subjects. Students from Year 7-10 continue to focus on learning and are now entering the next assessment phase. Year 11 students have the opportunity to review their results and have started their next unit. 2020 will see our first cohort in the new QCE system and students receiving an ATAR to gain university entry. If you would like to provide feedback on our strategic direction for the next four years please contact the school. Kind regards
Michelle Lyons Principal

Four ways to make stress work for you
1. Read your body differently
Start to read your stress response as being there to help you prepare for the
challenge. Instead of seeing it as a threat, try to see it as a coping tool. When you are
experiencing stress, you can say to yourself:
I am feeling a lile uncomfortable; my heart is beang faster, but my body is
geng me ready to compete.
2. Reframe the meaning of the event
Rather than framing exams as a threat, try to frame them as a challenge. Part of the
reason they are seen as a threat is because your whole future, identy and worth
appear to be at stake. This is not true. Exams are one very small part of your life that
does not decide your whole future.
There are always other opons, different pathways and opportunies. Vera Wang
failed to get into the Olympic ice-skang team and became a world famous dress
designer. Somemes the path we imagine looks a li(le different.
Not all journeys are straight, and the best ones can have diversions.
3. Accept stress and nega0ve emo0ons
Some common ways people approach stress is to try to relax, ignore stress and try to
reduce it. These approaches actually reinforce that stress is “bad” rather than
accepng it as a natural and helpful response. These approaches also lead to poorer
performance and emoonal exhauson.
Rather than ignoring the emoons, it’s be(er to feel them, accept them, and then
try to use them to your advantage. You can say to yourself:
I feel this way because this goal is important to me, and my body is responding this
way because it is geng me ready to perform.
4. Add to your resources
Clearly, changing your mindset is only helpful if you have the resources to cope. It
would be like an athlete who is about to compete but has not trained. Put me into
study, study in different ways (read, write ideas in your own words, talk about the
ideas, draw them) and give yourself me to pracse these ideas.
When you have done this, your stress response then draws on these resources.
Stress will always be present in our lives as we take on new challenges and grow as a
person. When we see low-level stress as a threat it becomes one. It becomes a red
flag that we are not coping, that these feelings are wrong and we should retreat. This
is not true.

QParents is here! Great news: Mossman State High School is providing our parent community with the opportunity to register for QParents.
The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians of
Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents will have secure, online access to their
child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.
QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student
information, including:
• Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
• Positive behaviour information
• Academic report cards
• Class timetables
• Downloading exam timetables and assessment planners
• Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
• Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address
• Enrolment details
QParents will assist both staff and parents in sharing and responding to information in an efficient and effective way.
QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to
communicate with us.

TK Goes Top 5 out of 22,000 Graduating Mossman State High School Student, Tkoda Hewett was recently in receipt of one of the highest academic honours afforded to high school students across the state.
Her response to the 2019 Queensland Core Skills Test Writing Task exam is among five to be published in the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority Retrospective. Twenty two thousand candidates from state and private schools sat the test this year as the external component of attaining an OP score.
Less than one percent of students (about 200) were awarded a score of ‘1’ on the test and TK was then selected as being in the top five even in this rarefied company. I have marked the test at state level for many years and there are some truly exceptional writers among students in Queensland. To be among the absolute best is exceptional.
Exceptional but not entirely surprising. TK is a brilliant young writer across several genres and is currently being considered to undertake a degree in the field at Columbia University in the United States.
TK is the second student from Mossman High to achieve such a remarkable honour. Amy
Willing was published in 2011.
