How to build resilience personally and in your kids There is no blanket rule for building resilience. What helps one person may be less effective for another, so it's important to find strategies that work for you. Below Dr Sharp shares his top tips. Keep your eye on the end goal "It's important, in life generally, to set and work towards meaningful goals," says Dr Sharp. "This is especially important during tough times because it can keep us focused on what's really important and help put the troubles in perspective." According to Dr Sharp, the positive feelings we experience when moving towards our goals can also help offset the sense of hopelessness and helplessness we sometimes feel during times of upheaval. However, don't forget that our goals must be important in our lives to have the right impact, he adds. Stay focused on what's important This can be a challenge, particularly during times of intense stress, says Dr Sharp. "But reminding ourselves of what we're working towards, why it's important and that we can achieve something is ... something that can combat the negative feelings we all experience during tough times." In her book Building resilience at work, Kathryn McEwen writes that one way to gain perspective is by using a rating system. "Rate the event you are experiencing on a crisis line from 1-10." According to Ms McEwen, a low rating (e.g. 1 to 2) would reflect a relatively minor event; a mid-rating (e.g. 5) would be something serious and a high rating (e.g. 9 to 10) would equate to extreme trauma, such as death. She writes: "In reality, most things that happen to us on a day-to-day basis are only around the 2 mark in overall life importance. Yet when we are stuck in a traffic jam on the way to an appointment or late with a report, our reaction can easily become a 7, a rating totally inconsistent with the importance of the event." So the next time a minor setback sends your stress levels into overdrive, rather than overacting, why not use the crisis line to remind yourself of what's really important? We use this strategy with kids when we use a catastrophe scale. It is amazing how our reactions can be so out of proportion to the seriousness of the event sometimes. Be realistic and optimistic Realism and optimism are linked when it comes to emotional resilience, and for good reason, according to Dr Sharp. "Realism is a most important part of optimism because if things are [bad] we need to acknowledge this but then face up to it and deal with it as best we can. Real optimists don't pretend things are great if they're not great; they acknowledge and accept the negatives they're facing but then look to find solutions (within themselves and within their social networks and connections)." Changing your outlook may take time, but it's worth a try. Claire McInerney Principal

Lest we forget, For all of the lost, The people that sacrificed their lives, That makes us what we are now, A multicultural country with peace and harmony, We used to be so lonely, But because of people, That fought in war, We are now happy, Which is why we should have a moment of peace, On the 11th of the 11th to remember what we are now, And to thank them that they went to war. By Jessica (4-29)

We will remember the soldiers that fought in the war, Their loved ones and their little ones were so desperate to see them again, But they doubted they would. Those soldiers were so brave, To fight and to save Those that were in need. Let’s all stand together to respect how hard they worked for us. When I got a letter, I let it out and cried When my Dad had died. Every single day I try to look At the bright side, but there is nothing left, I wish there was a life ref, But we still respect. Lest We Forget. By Chanel (4-29)

I will never forget the time I set out to go to war. The danger, the tortured people dying and will never forget my best friend who was shot and died. And I will never forget the boy who lost his leg. I miss my family, my wife and our baby. And I wish I could be there with you, but I can’t. I will never forget when I got shot and almost died and I lost a lot of blood. But thank goodness the war is over. By Alisha (4-29)

Date: November 19, 2015 Issue 35 SPORT McDonald’s Hoop Time Year 3-4 Basketball Tournament (Friday November 13th) On Friday November 13th PPPS sent 32 students (4 teams– A and B Girls and A and B Boys) to the annual Hoop Time Basketball Tournament at the Mill Park Basketball Stadium to play against six other schools within the district. We had year 5-6 students coach the teams on the day and they did a fantastic job. Out of the four teams entered all made the grand final and two out of the four won. Each school added up all their teams wins on the day and the school that had most wins were awarded the Premiers pennant. PPPS were crowned Premiers again for the 4th year in a row. At the tournament we had quite a number of students who have never played basketball and for me the big winner on the day was the game of basketball itself. We now have many students at recess and lunch that have taken to the game. A big thank you to Mr Lowes who attended on the day providing me with great support and encouraging all of our students. The scorers on the bench were provided by SEDA Basketball and they did a wonderful job on the day. This was greatly appreciated by the students and myself. All the students represented our school proudly and showed the school values at all times. The year 5-6 students are to be congratulated in the way they trained the players leading up to the tournament and then coached their respective teams on the day. Finally it was of enormous support to the students and myself to see so many parents come along and cheer on PPPS.
