Editors Letter
Welcome to the May issue of Princes Risborough View magazine. As you will see, we have a very different front cover this month and that’s because the Music Festival is coming to town and we are very pleased to promote it. This is a brand new event that will appeal to all ages, so if you are interested in something new and a great day out why not go along to Risborough School, Top Field on Saturday 2nd June and ‘boogie on down’! (see centre pages for full details).
There are definitely a busy few months ahead for Princes Risborough and our community pages are certainly packed full of exciting events, with something to suit everyone.
Also, without doubt worth a visit, will be the Horses, Hounds and Heroes Family Fun Day on May 6th (see p26) and, hoping to entice many more entrants to their Annual Show this year, is the Horticultural Society (also p26).
Not forgetting of course, the Risborough Festival which starts on July 7th. It is never too early to mention this main town event and we are extremely pleased to have been asked to produce the Festival programme this year. So, if you are organising an event or activity during this week or would simply like to donate to the Festival or take out an advert, please get in touch with us here at Princes Risborough View (07500 048230 or [email protected]) We would love to hear from you.

Recipe of the Month
For those who’ve only ever considered asparagus as a luxurious accompaniment to a main course, it’s time to think again. This delicious recipe is simple to cook and the mild flavours of the mozzarella and eggs mean that the asparagus is still the star of the dish.
INGREDIENTS:
• 275g new potatoes• 450g asparagus• 5 large eggs• 200g buffalo mozzarella• 50g Parmesan, grated• 2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley• 2 tbsp olive oil• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
METHOD:
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water.
2. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time.
3. Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato.
4. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears.
5. Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned.
6. Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up.
7. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm.
8. Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.
Preperation time 10 minutes, Cooking time 20 minutes
Asparagus Frittata Serves 4-6

It’s time to crown the new May Queen and dance around the Maypole. Heavily rooted in the pagan and the celtic, celebrations are taking place across the land. This magical time of year is all about nature, fertility, tradition and folklore. Make yourself a daisy crown, sprinkle on some fairy dust and dance barefoot in the moonlight. Or failing that, find a patch of sunlight and let a book lead you on a merry dance…
Lob, Linda NewberyThe original inspiration for Newbery’s ‘Lob’ was a stranger she saw on her way to work; ‘the man who walks the roads’. Where was he going and where had he come from? This image, combined with those of the ‘green man’ in English Folklore who appears in carvings as a face amongst leaves and branches, lead to her to create her garden helper ‘Lob’. Lucy ‘s grandfather tells her about Lob and all the ‘Lob-work’ he does around the garden. You can only see him if you believe in him. It’s a beautiful and heart-warming children’s book which has great appeal for adults.
The Most Amazing Places of Folklore and Legend in Britain: Where to Discover Our Living Heritage and Traditions, Readers Digest. If you’ve ever thought that Britain is lacking in tradition and folklore in comparison with our European neighbours, think again! This is a travel guide that will take you deep into the heart of the countryside and the legends that abound. From the solstice celebrations at Stone Henge to the yeti-like Beast of Bolam in the wilds of Northumberland, this is a land that’s teeming with folklore. Use this modern guidebook to take a step back in time and into a land that you may not recognise.
Arthur, High King of Britain, Michael Morpurgo. This is the second children’s book we’ve selected but it’s a wonderful way for kids and grown-ups alike to hear some of the magical stories of King Arthur and his mystical round table. Michael Morpurgo’s tale begins with a boy, marooned on a sandbank with the sea lapping perilously close to him. He wakes up in a strange bed and finds he has a visitor: King Arthur himself. The legendary figure then recounts tales of Camelot, sorcery, knights on mighty steeds and betrayal. Prepare to be transported back in time.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William ShakespeareMischief abounds in one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays which has three main, interwoven plotlines. The story centres around the marriage of Theseus, The Duke of Athens, and the Amazon queen, Hippolyta and is set in woodland as well as the magical realm of ‘Fairyland’. One of the most memorable characters is undoubtedly the fairy court jester ‘Puck’ who dispenses his magical juice which, when sprinkled on your eyelids, means you fall in love with the next thing you see. This is one dream from which you won’t want to wake.
The Heart of Robin Hood, David Farr. This is a brilliant reworking of the classic tale of the outlaw and his band of merry men. This time though, Robin and his men have grasped the idea of stealing from the rich, but have not yet signed-up to the principle of then giving it to the poor. It isn’t going down well with the poverty-stricken around Nottingham Forest. In David Farr’s adaptation, it’s Maid Marion who has to blaze the trail and convince Robin to follow his heart and not hold onto his swag, for the sake of the country.

The Princes Risborough and District Horticultural Society is no more. However, the annual show was always a highlight of the Risborough Festival and there is a determination to continue with it. A committee has been formed therefore to organise and run a “Town Show” on the second Saturday of the Festival Week (14 July).
The intention is that the re-born show will be a balance between competition and fun with the emphasis on fun. It
will follow the pattern of its predecessor and will include not only the usual horticultural classes but also classes for floral art, a range of domestic skills, crafts and hobbies. There will also be a few classes for children - the gardeners of the future.
It will be a true local show that will provide opportunities for everyone to have a go. But it is up to you take the opportunity. The Show Schedule i.e. the full list of classes, the simple rules for exhibiting and entry forms will be available in June.
Entering is easy, simply complete the relevant entry form and send with the entry fee to the address on the form then bring your exhibit along on the morning of the Show. Entry fees are modest (25p per entry) and so are the prizes (75p for 1st; 50p for 2nd; 25p for 3rd) but there is also a lot of silver-ware to be won and retained for a year.
If the above cannot entice you to enter an exhibit, come along to the Show anyway. Entry is free and remember, we think we serve the best tea and cake on the day.

Diabetes and how it can affect your feet
Diabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels in the body are higher than normal. This is usually because the body cannot make enough insulin or it can’t use the insulin that it does make.
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas which helps our bodies to use the sugar and distribute it to the cells of our bodies. If this function is impaired there can be health complications
one of which can be a loss of sensation in the feet. This is known as peripheral neuropathy and occurs because Diabetes affects the nerves in the feet. There can also be a reduced blood flow to the feet which can affect the ability to heal and fight infection. Consequently it is very important to look after your feet if you have been diagnosed with Diabetes.
Some top tips:
• Check your feet every day. Look for colour changes or damaged skin.
• Always wear shoes so that your feet are protected.
• Don’t sit with your feet close a fire or a hot water bottle if you have some reduced sensation.
• If you have corns or hard skin visit a podiatrist to have them treated professionally.
• Have your feet checked at least once a year by a podiatrist
The podiatrist is in a position to give you appropriate advice and treatment and to assess the risk of any complications developing.
For further information on any foot related conditions, or to make an appointment, please phone The Luxton Clinic on 01844 352200

There are many steps you can take to help prevent containerised plants drying out, first and foremost, choose the correct growing medium, a compost specifically created for this purpose will of course have water retentive properties along side an additional amount of fertiliser. We, at Askett Nurseries, always recommend adding a spoonful of water gel to your compost and at the same time add some slow release fertiliser in granular or pellet form as this will sustain your plants for the whole season. Mix these products in prior to planting and the roots of your plants will find the precious water stored in the gel which is a great saviour if occasionally you skip watering.
When planting up wire baskets use a good quality pre-formed liner, or if you prefer to use moss or sisa moss, don’t skimp, use a thick layer to keep the moisture in, and don’t forget to line the inside with a round of plastic with some holes made for drainage.
Now you can get creative! Choosing the right plants for your container or basket is really important especially if it has to cope with a dry, sunny spot. Plants that tolerate a short period of drought include the
highly colourful Zonal (upright) geraniums and the trailing, ivy leaved pelargoniums, petunias, including the wonderful trailing surfinia types, often scented, and some with double flowers - also in this group are the very popular, smaller flowered “Million Bells” also known as Calibrachoa. These produce a trailing mass of blooms all summer long. An interesting, vigorous trailer is Scaevola, now available in many shades of blue and white and is a real tough customer, a great alternative to lobelia, which can be a little delicate for a south facing position. Use coloured foliage plants to break up all the colour. The helichrysums come in all shades, silver and gold are popular, they also have large and small leaves, the smaller cope better in the dry.
One of our favourite annual bedding plants that is not drought tolerant is the Impatien, or Busy Lizzie. Perhaps the timing is fortuitous, as this year, due to a countrywide problem concerning a highly debilitating mildew these highly popular plants will not be available. The plant industry is working very hard at eradicating this and we are hopeful that next year they will be back on sale.
Any way don’t be put off bringing some welcome summer colour into your gardens this year, we have lots of drought tolerant plants and some tips and advice to help you through the hose-pipe ban.
Happy Gardening.See you soon,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russelland all at Askett Nurseries.

Paper Trails
By Mike Payne
One excellent source of facts and information amongst historians comes from ephemera, described in the dictionary as ‘Items designed to last only for a short time, such as programmes, papers or posters’.
In their pages, old newspapers and other publications can provide memories of long forgotten businesses, buildings and events through their adverts and articles. And it is amazing to think of someone keeping till receipts and bills for 50 plus years and more, but that is exactly what some people do, and occasionally these things turn up and prove very revealing.
At one of our Heritage Society meetings recently one of our members gave me a promotional leaflet for an offer at ‘Sketchley the Cleaners’, when that company was in the Princes Risborough High Street. As many of you will
remember the shop was situated next to what is now K & B Family Butchers at the top of town. It proves that Risborough ephemera is still very much in evidence by way of leaflets, pamphlets, shop bills, tour guides, postcards, old papers, postcards, school documents and even some limited edition collectable cards.
A while back I received a bag full of old receipts from one Risborough resident and inside there were printed and hand-written bills from the likes of Easts, the Coal Merchant, Newitts, the Sand and Ballast Merchant, Steels the Bakers, Ellis’s the Furniture Store, Wycombe Electrical Store and many more besides. It all made for fascinating reading, if only to compare prices from then until now.
There are actually dealers out there who buy and sell such artefacts, although they are generally looking for older ephemera, in fact the older the better. I’m sure that many of you will have some of these items tucked away in a drawer, or in a box in the loft, and it is important to realise how invaluable they are when recording the history of the town. Hoarders of the world unite!
Another document that I was given recently was a programme from the 1968 Risborough Carnival. Hard to imagine that document is 44 years old now,
but it is full of interesting pictures and adverts from businesses long since changed or gone. One lovely picture shows the Market Fish Restaurant in the days when there was a sit-down restaurant inside, where you could enjoy a fish and chip meal. I’m sure many of you will remember that, but again, it’s hard to imagine it now. Looking at the shop today it begs the question, were we all smaller in those days? And still on food, one lady gave me the receipts from her wedding reception. Again it was from the 1960’s and the prices are very eye-opening. Four dozen sausage rolls for 19/6d was particularly noticeable!
I have included pictures of some of the receipts and a programme from a 1958 Fete, to raise funds for the building of the Royal British Legion. So, do have a look around the house and see if you can find any such interesting pieces of ephemera. If you do, then please give me a call.
Email Mike at [email protected] or ring 01844 347511if you have any information or photos you would like to share, or if you would like to fi nd out more about the Heritage Society.

Princes Risborough Town CouncilRAF High Wycombe, at Walter’s Ash, hold the freedom of High Wycombe and to recognize this, every four years they march through the town bearing arms and hold a parade. Recently they were given the freedom of the whole Wycombe District, and as with the town freedom, they will recognize this every four years, but each time in different parts of the district. Princes Risborough is honoured to have been chosen as the first town in the district to be visited in this way. On Monday 28th May, RAF High Wycombe will march through the town, parade and attend a church service. It is doubly pleasing that this should be taking place close to the date of the Queen’s diamond jubilee.Risborough Youth Club – Open For Business!Following Bucks County Council’s withdrawal of funding for youth services across the county, it is great that local volunteers have managed to set up ‘Risborough Youth Club’ and have now re-opened at the Hawthorn Road Youth Club building on Monday nights. The now locally run Youth Club has been very busy since re-opening and with a new dedicated Youth Leader in place and a small team of enthusiastic volunteer helpers it looks like the young people of Risborough have a safe and organised venue for evening activities again. In fact the first few weeks have been so popular that it is hoped the club will soon be able to open up on a Wednesday evening too.The new youth workers and volunteers have been very busy planning a range of activities for the coming months and have found their Monday nights very rewarding and great fun too. Their enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment has been rubbing off on the rapidly growing number of members. Membership is open to any young person from in and around the town between 11 and 18 years of age.New Youth Leader, Emma Lewis, has said “I’m amazed how good for the soul working with Risborough’s youngsters is proving to be. Although often very lively, they’re a great bunch.”Can you help?As always, more help is needed and would be welcomed. If you feel that you could offer some help, little or lots, whether it’s running around kicking a football, exploring some dj’ing and music skills, or just helping man the tuck shop occasionally, the Risborough Youth Club team would be very keen to hear from you. Training and CRB checking can easily be arranged and you’d be guaranteed a varied and enjoyable few hours. For further information, or to contact the Youth Club, you can visit the new ‘Risborough Youth Club’ facebook page, or via the Town Council.
