Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

• Born: 10.June.1921 as Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark.

• Family:

o his mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg.

o Father was Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark.

o He also had four elder sisters Margarita, Theodora, Cecilie, and Sophie.

Education

• Philip was first educated at an American school in Paris.

• In 1928, he was sent to the UK to attend Cheam School.

• In 1933, he was sent to Schule Schloss Salem in Germany

• After the rise of Nazism in Germany, he went to Gordonstoun School in Scotland.

Royal Navy and meeting Elizabeth

• After leaving Gordonstoun in 1939, Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy.

• Next year he graduated the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

• During the Second World War, he continued to serve in the British forces.

• In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth toured the Royal Naval College.

• Elizabeth fell in love with Philip and they began to exchange letters.

• (Elizabeth was 13 and Philip was 18 )

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s wedding.

• In the summer of 1946, Philip asked the King for his daughter's hand in marriage.

• Before the official engagement announcement, he abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles.

• The King gave him, the style of His Royal Highness and the title Duke of Edinburgh.

• Philip and Elizabeth were married in Westminster Abbey, on 20th of November, 1947.

Education

• In his early years, he was educated by his governess, Catherine Peebles

• Age of 8 went to Hill House School in West London.

• and later Gordonstoun boarding school in Scotland.

• After Gordonstoun, Prince Charles went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he received a lower second class degree for Anthropology and archaeology.

• He also spent time at the University of Wales, where he began to learn Welsh.

• He later served in the Royal navy, from 1971 to 1978

First marriage

• In his early 30s, his parents put pressure on Charles to choose a wife and get married.

• He met Diana Spencer - a young nursery assistant.

• Charles was taken by her kindness and warm-heartedness.

• Prince Charles proposed to Diana on February 1981

• Married in St Paul's Cathedral on 29.July.1981

• (Diana was 20 and Charles was 33 years old )

• The couple's age difference (almost 13 years), as well as Diana's concern about Charles's affair with his previous girlfriend Camilla.

• Charles and Diana divorced on 28 August 1996.

• 31 of August in 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales was killed in a car accident in Paris.
