A Message from Pastor Matt For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1) The famous passage of scripture from Ecclesiastes, and its following verses, speaks to the variety of life’s experiences, and the reality of change for all people and all things. Verses 2-8 list groups of phrases which provide opposite events of human life, i.e. a time to be born also shares a time to die; a time to kill is countered by a time to heal. The list is comprised of seven of these paired phrases, and is therefore, for the biblical reader, a symbol of “completeness” as the number seven was seen as a special number representing the same. Thus, in probably the most well-known portion of the wisdom book (thanks largely in part by its use as a song by the folk-rock group the Byrd’s in the 1960’s), we hear of the “complete” picture of human existence as one which is beset with change. As we ready ourselves to enter into the fall season, we in Maryland know that there will soon be many changes that will come our way. The Sun will set earlier. The days will slowly become cooler, then colder. The leaves will shortly begin to change color and drop to the ground. The long, lazy days of summer will become filled with the activities of school, sports, and fall and winter holidays. There is little one can do to stop the change of the seasons, and there is little one can do to stop many of the changes that happen to us and around us. But as a people of faith, we hold that through the changes, we know that we are held in the hands and care of a God who loves us. And that as the writer of Ecclesiastes has recorded, a God who uses every time and season of life known to

humanity for a purpose. And…that through our relationship with God in Christ, that ultimately that purpose is for the good of God’s people. Even when that purpose may be hard to see. Imagine someone who came to visit our area for the first time in the middle of a harsh and snow-filled winter. They might never even begin to suspect that a white and icy landscape would in no more than 6 months give way to a field of lush green grass, or beautiful and colorful flowers. The cold wind and bitterness replaced by sunshine and warmth. So too, in some of the tough and difficult times of life, we may begin to wonder if the season of “breaking down” or “weeping” or “mourning” could ever give way to the “building up” or “laughing” or “dancing” that is also promised. To remember that God’s promise is with us still and will not abandon us or leave us in such places forever, but will bring us through to new and brighter days. And we find ourselves in a place where our faith comes in to strengthen us and shine its life into our hearts. In the midst of irresistible change, to remember the irresistible “unchanging” quality of God and God’s love for God’s people. As we in our region go through and witness the seasonal changes of life around us, may we be reminded of the changes of human life which take place as well…and the promise of God which will be with us through them all. Yours in Christ, The Rev. Matthew Fuhrman

A Message from Deacon Al Streckfus

MARTIN LUTHER’S SEAL & THE EXPLAINATION

I received a book entitled “October 31, 1517” as a gift when I celebrated my 40 years from the congregation and would like to share an article that I read. It’s entitled “Martin Luther’s Seal”. The Author explains in the book that the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is our God” helped Martin Luther with the explanation of what the seal means to Christians. The central and dominant feature, of Course was the heart, but on it was an even more prominent cross, black because the cross “mortifies and should also cause pain.” Yet the heart itself, he went on, “retains its natural color,” red Why you ask because it does not corrupt nature, that is, it does not kill but keeps alive. Now comes the change of heart. Beyond the black and the red figures is a white rose, “for white is the color of the spirits and the angels (Matthew 28), according to Luther’s interpretation. The white Rose is “to show that faith in the crucified gives joy, comfort, and peace.” At this point repentance is far from being associated only with self-obsessed gloom. Luther goes on, ‘Such a rose should stand in a sky-blue field, symbolizing that such oy in spirt and faith is a beginning of the heavenly future joy, which begins already, but is grasped in hope, not yet revealed”. Luther completes its explanation by describing, surrounding it all, “a golden ring, symbolizing that such blessedness in heaven lasts forever and has no end.” It is “exquisite, beyond all joy and goods.” Luther called the seal a “compendium” or “summary of theology.” So my Brothers and Sisters in Christ the next time you see the seal take a few extra minutes to actually

look at it and remember the importance and meaning of what “Luther’s Seal” is saying to you. Peace Be With You Deacon Al Streckfus O.S.S.D

A Message from Michele Nitzel, Daycare Director

The leaves are turning colors and starting to fall, the air is getting

cooler and days will gradually start to get shorter.

October is Fire Safety Month. Throughout the month there will be

opportunity for the children to visit with fire fighters and learn

about the important role they play in our community. The children

have been practicing monthly fire drills in anticipation of a visit

from Golden Ring Fire Department who will soon arrive for our

official timed fire drill. If the children evacuate quickly (we only

have 60 seconds) they will see the fire truck and equipment a fire

fighter needs to stay safe up close.

October is a good time to practice home evacuations with your

family and don’t forget to change the batteries in your smoke

detectors.

We will travel to Chapel Hills Farm and Nursery where there will

be animals to see, a hayride, fruits and veggies to explore and of

course opportunity to choose the perfect pumpkin to bring home to

carve with mom and dad.

October is the perfect month for the children to explore through

taste, touch, smell, sight and sound. Pumpkins, apples and leaves

provide plenty of sensory opportunities to explore and learn using

all of our senses.

We would like to thank the wonderful men of POP

Church. You are always willing to help us with anything that

needs fixing around the Center. We greatly appreciate your talents

and all the help you give us. You keep our Center in tip top

condition!

We look forward to a Blessed and Bountiful Fall Season and we

thank you for your continued support and interest in the staff and

children.

Message from Bob DeJong

Council President

I wonder how many people actually take the time to read this? My boss sends out a weekly message and sometimes she puts somewhere in it a line that reads if you read this send me an e-mail to be entered into a drawing. Wish I could do that for you all. I usually get 1-2 positive comments a month. My hope is to be inspiring and challenging to you. Like this month. I have had many people ask me about help for Pastor Matt. We are trying our very best to find someone. Unfortunately we haven’t had any luck. Then I look at the budget and wonder if we can afford help? I was praying this year not to have written something like this. However, we are now $10,000 behind in our budget. Not exactly reassuring to someone evaluating us as a potential employer. Would you work for a company in debt? Now that summer is over and vacations are through, please pray about temporarily increasing your giving until we are back in the positive side. I would also challenge us as a congregation to pay off the organ by 12/31/2016. Let’s start the New Year on a sound note. (Pun intended!) So, show me you have read this by helping us end the year in the black. May God continue to bless us.

Prince of Peace Social Ministry We want first to extend heartfelt thanks to so many of our co-laborers in the Social Ministry field, who have kept our mission at the forefront of their minds and have helped in so many ways over the past weeks: • to all the people who made our first-ever Resource Fair such a success, especially to Sandy Hullihen who took the leadership role in this, and to all the people both within and outside of the church who contributed their time and resources. Eighteen needy households received information, lunch, and food to take home. This translates into 65 individuals that were helped. We are so grateful to the ELCA for the Domestic Hunger Grant that made the Resource Fair possible, and will also give us funds for Christmas turkey certificates for our Food Pantry clients. We hope to get this grant again and put on an even bigger Resource Fair next year. • to Clair Price and the Memorials Committee for keeping the Food Pantry supplied with nice paper bags that we can put a sticker on identifying that it came from Prince of Peace. Such a nice way to give out the food.

Page 14: Prince of Peace - Razor Planet€¦ · Mighty Fortress is our God” helped Martin Luther with the explanation of what the seal means to Christians. The central and dominant feature,

• to everyone who has contributed food or funds toward Food for Thought and the Food Pantry, especially the Daytimers who are sponsoring food for two of the children. Carolyn is working closely with Red House Run to make any “tweaks” needed in the bags of food we supply, and she is always looking for the best deals when she goes shopping, to make the funds go as far as possible. Everyone can feel really good about getting this program underway right here at the beginning of the year, so the kids who need that extra nutrition for the weekends can get it. • to members of Thrivent who have applied for Action Team grants to use for the Food Pantry and Food for Thought. A total of three cards have been received this year, amounting to $750. This is a huge help! Any Thrivent member can apply for an Action Team grant twice a year. To help our Food Pantry or Food for Thought in this way, see any member of the Social Ministry committee, or Pastor Matt. • to Martie Sonntag, Doris Shoul, and all the Hearts and Hands ladies who contributed both a quilt and an embroidered lap robe – that will be the main attraction in the basket that Prince of Peace is donating to Streets of Hope for the Chinese auction at the Bull Roast on October 23rd. For more information about this event, check out the flyer on the bulletin board or see Barbara Nock. • to all the people who gave Food for Thought a kick-start in the spring by contributing to the Mother's Day and Father's Day booklets, and to Dottie Staab for putting them together so nicely.

Looking ahead to the month of November, Social Ministry will again be hosting a Good Gifts Fair on Sunday, November 6, from 9 am – 1 pm in Ellenberger Hall. This is an opportunity for everyone to look at options for making your holiday gift giving really meaningful. Just select from

Page 15: Prince of Peace - Razor Planet€¦ · Mighty Fortress is our God” helped Martin Luther with the explanation of what the seal means to Christians. The central and dominant feature,

the many choices in the Good Gifts catalog, and that becomes a donation in the name of your loved ones, complete with a special gift announcement card and token gift you can present to them. The Good Gifts Fair supports outreach ministries of the ELCA, with the emphasis on World Hunger. Anyone can contribute at any time to these ministries, whether or not you use the Good Gifts catalog. However, on November 6 we will be paying special attention to the opportunity we have to make an alternative kind of gift to our loved ones, not one that “moth and rust consumes” but rather one that helps others in need both here and overseas. This is a powerful way to witness for our faith, and people see that our actions are in line with what we say we believe. So please start thinking about people you could honor with a donation to a Good Gift this Christmas, and bring your list to the fair on November 6th. Good Gifts catalogs will be available later in October. See you at the Fair!

WELCA

Hello from your WELCA Steering Committee members. Our Steering Committee has several projects and meetings scheduled October through December, 2016. Our Tuesday Morning WELCA meeting was held September 20, 2016. Three members attended the meeting with Sharon Ormrod leading the lesson about Jonah, the disgruntled prophet. Hopefully, my lesson didn’t make anyone else disgruntled. On Sunday afternoon, September 25, 2016, we held the WELCA meeting with lunch in Ellenberger Hall. Thirteen members attended for lunch, fun and a lesson, again about Jonah. Since I already got over my nervousness, I also did the lesson on Sunday, with a lot of encouragement from the participants. Hopefully, I didn’t scare away anyone from future meetings. BAKE SALE: October 2, 2016 in Ellenberger Hall starting at 8 AM and continuing between the services. We have at least 20 advance donations, but if you didn’t sign up in advance and want to donate a goodie, just bring your donation to Ellenberger Hall that Sunday. We welcome all donations. STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: October 7, 2016, 10 AM, Conference Room, 2nd floor Committee meetings are open to all members, so if you have a suggestion, idea or just want to see what we’re doing, please come. TUESDAY WELCA REGULAR MEETING: October 18, 2016 CANCELLED due to Daytimers trip to

Congratulations to all who celebrate! If you find an “active” member’s name missing, it simply means that our church records are incomplete. We will be happy to add that information as you provide it to the church office. For assistance, please call 410-866-8766. Let us know of any omission so that we may update the church record and not miss you the next time.
