by Marty HarrisFive years ago Kirkwood resident

Loretta Seltzer, a retired Affton HighSchool teacher, decided to join anexercise class.

I wanted to exercise my leftknee. It was going arthritic and thedoctor said the best thing for it wasexercise, said Seltzer, who is in herearly 70s.

Seltzer found a class at ConcordiaLutheran Church, convenientlylocated across the street from herhome. The class, now called Fitand Be Fit, is sponsored by MarthaRounds and meets on Monday andWednesday mornings from 10 to 11a.m.

God must have sent this anexercise class less than a block away, she said. But she admitted she didhave a few reservations.

My rst thought was that I was in

my 60s and I thought all the womenwere much older what would wehave in common? she said. Im up

for anything so I thought Id try the

class for a year and see what thedoctor said.

After that rst year, Seltzer not

only got a good report from the doctorbut she got to know the girls in theclass, most of whom are in their 70s,80s and even a few in their 90s.

When people exercise, they talkabout their husbands, their achesand pains, Seltzer said. Pretty soonwe began to get together outside ofexercise class.

Now the ladies not only exercisetogether, but they celebrate eachothers birthdays, go out to dinnerand do seasonal events such as aChristmas and spring luncheon.

They also look out for one another. If somebody doesnt show up

for class, we normally know aheadof time, but if we dont they worryabout it during class, said AlaneFrankeneld, the class instructor for

about eight years. When Kirkwood resident Joyce

Carlson, 84, had a heart valvereplaced three years ago, Seltzer wasat the hospital sitting with her.

Last week Seltzers husband felland broke his hip. Seltzer receivedphone calls from classmates plusdaily calls from classmate ConchiDominguez to nd out how her

husband was doing. It means a lot to me, Seltzer said.Other participants feel the same

way. This class has such a camaraderie

and love for one another, saidCarlson, who has been exercising for

    40 years.

I really like the class, saidMarilee Steger, who has been in theclass since about 2003. I come morefor the socializing. Its like anothergroup of friends. You see the eachweek and keep track of each other.

    Lifestyle Exercise

    Frankeneld also enjoys the class

and its activities. But she takes herrole as an instructor for these seniorladies seriously.

My goal is to work with themas far as lifestyle to keep them intheir homes, said Frankeneld. She

called the class more of a lifestyleexercise. The class starts off inchairs with stretching, using weightsfor osteoporosis, working on balance, lower body strength and coordination, plus slow aerobics.

About 18 women are enrolled in theclass some come only on Monday orWednesday. On a recent Monday, 10ladies did the chair exercises, liftedtheir weights and then stood besidethe chairs doing lunges and squats.Throughout the class could be heard afew comments: Youre really workingus today, Its like youre relentless,a few students commented to theinstructor.

    But when Frankeneld asked if

they wanted aerobics, the ladies saidyes.

Alice Clark of Kirkwood, whos inher 90s, however, decided to sit outthe aerobics, saying it made her heartbeat too fast.

I think its good exercise andtheres a lot of pretty interesting

women, Clark said, taking a breakwhile others did aerobics. She saidshe also enjoys the outings.

Youre not sitting around at home.Thats deadly, she added.

    A Social Network

With some of the participantsgetting older in the mid to upper90s, they arent able to come to classany more, but still enjoy the socialactivities, noted Marilyn Keil. At 71shes one of the youngest in the class. She started exercising with the classabout 12 years ago when she had aknee done and the class met at St.Joseph Hospital.

Keil of Valley Park, also praisedthe teacher.

We feel lucky to have her, Keilsaid.

    Frankeneld, who has been

teaching exercise for 19 years, wouldwelcome new participants.

Its (exercise) important something older people need to dofor health and well being, saidFrankeneld, whose mother Carol

    Fisher attends the class. Frankeneld

grew up in Kirkwood and now lives inBallwin.

As people get older their group

of friends gets smaller. This isone way to get them out and in anenvironment where they can socializeand dont end up homebound,Frankeneld said.

    NORC

Seltzer would like to see the socialand caring network she has foundthrough this class expand to whatshe called a naturally occurringretirement community (NORC). Hermother-in-law, 97, is involved in sucha program in Creve Coeur where shelives. NORCs are organized groups of

seniors and others who enable seniorsto stay in their homes. Some groupseven receive some government help,Seltzer said.

    For now, Seltzer nds inspiration

from the women. Its a very uplifting to see women

in this stage of their lives exercisingphysically and moving the way theyshould be, Seltzer said. She said

people think when someone is in their80s or 90s, they should almost be in awheelchair.

I feel very good when I leave(class), Seltzer added.

Anyone interested in joining theFit and Be Fit class can come to classlocated on the rst oor at Concordia

    Lutheran Church, 505 S. KirkwoodRoad.

As president of the Mehlville SchoolBoard, Thomas Diehl, has a keen senseof the needs of young people. That

sense of social responsibility mesheswith his awareness of the needs ofolder people.

And that awareness led to hisaccepting a position on the Mid-East

Area Agency on Aging (MEAAA) Boardof Directors earlier this year.

Diehl sees the MEAAA boardsbiggest challenge as getting theMissouri Legislature to fully fund thebudgets for states area agencies onaging.

Especially the meals program, said Diehl. He added that MEAAAsMeals on Wheels and senior centerhot lunches play a key role in allowingseniors to live independently.

Without proper nutrition, too manyseniors suffer from illnesses that landthem in nursing homes. In many cases, the taxpayers end up paying for theircare through Medicaid, he said.

Diehl brings his experience as aprofessional fundraising consultantto the MEAAA board and stresses theneed for the community to support theagencys programs.

Although most of MEAAAs fundscome from the federal and stategovernment, the 10 percent of theagencys budget that comes fromprivate donations is becoming moreand more important, Diehl noted.

    Diehl urged residents to contact

their state legislators and ask themto fully fund area agency on agingprograms. But, he added, they can also

become involved as volunteers at theirlocal senior centers.

    MEAAA operates 26 senior centers

and Meals on Wheels programs inthe counties of St. Louis, St. Charles,Franklin and Jefferson. Area seniorcenters are located at:

many the agency offers to helpseniors live independently. It offersa comprehensive information andassistance service to connect people

with any service available for olderadults in the St. Louis metro area. These include services MEAAAoffers directly, such as Meals onWheels, as well as contract services transportation, adult day care and in-home assistance.

MEAAA also runs a support programfor caregivers of people age 60 andolder and for grandparents and othersenior relatives raising children. TheMEAAA information and assistancestaff can also refer seniors to servicesprovided by other agencies, such as
