JustaboutthetimeIthinkthatourhotsummerswillneverend,MotherNaturesplashescolor—albeitinsmalldoses—indiscriminatelyalongourroadways.Thesweet-gumsandthetallowsareamongthefirsttoblush.ThenonemorningIlookthroughmykitchenwindow,andtheleavesonthebiggesthickoryinmywoodsaregoinghead-to-headwiththemorningsun’sbrilliantrays.Ilosemybreathatthesight. JustaboutthetimeIreallygetboredwithcerealandmuffinsforbreakfast,Irealizeit’spumpkinbreadtimeandsetabouttobakeacoupleof loaves.That,myfriend,slath-eredwithcreamy,softbuttersetsthetoneforaperfectdayandmakeseverythingrightwiththeworld. It’shardtohurryoff toworkwhenallof MotherNature’sgloryisplayedoutinthesewoods.Ipouranothercupof coffee,sit,notintheswingontheporch,butonmyfrontsteps,andsipandlisten.Thebirdssay“thankyou”tothegranddameof natureinmelodiesnothingcanmimic—andIjustsitthereanddrinkinallthatshehastooffer...andIrealizejusthowgoodsheisatwhatshedoes. MotherNaturegrabsmyattitudebyitsthroatand
yanksitoutof myentirebeing.Itchanges...justlikethat.Iwanttowalkinthewoods,gathertwigsandpinecones,andsitlongerinthefreshair.Whenshereachesdownintohergoodybagandbringsupahandfulof Fall,sheis,inmyopinion,atherfinest.It’ssortof kintowhenyouknewyou’ddonesomethingyoushouldn’thavedone,andinsteadof gettingpunished,Momhugsyouandsayseverythingisokay.Wow.Yourememberthatfeeling? Ishowmyself tobereadyfortheseasonchangebyhangingamost-welcomingwreathonmyfrontdoor.I’llgetanewclutchof Indiancorn,tieitwithcalico,andhangitonthebackdoor.I’llfillmygreat-grandmother’swoodenbowlwithyellowandredapplesandputitonthecoffeetableandbegintopulloutmyaging,butmuch-lovedcollectionof homedecoratingaccessories.There’llsurelybeachangeinmymenus;mybeverageof choicewillbeapplecider,andI’llsipitthroughastraw. Wecanliterallywashourhomeswithawholenewarrayof colortakendirectlyfromMotherNature’swhims.Theyarealljustoutsideourdoors.Areyouready?Iam.

NovemberandDecemberareconsideredmagicalmonthsbymanypeoplebecausetherearefamilygath-erings,dinners,parties,secrets(gifts),andanticipation.IloveThanksgivingbecauseitisnotascommercial-izedasChristmas,anditismostlyaboutfriends,family,food,andappreciatingourblessings!Somewomengetstressedouttryingtopreparetheperfectholidaymeal,butI’mprettyhappyif minemakesittothetablewith-outadisaster. AfewyearsagoIinvitedaunts,uncles,cousins,kids,andgrandkidsforThanksgivinggumbo.Ihadpreparedtwobigpotsof seafoodgumboinanticipationof hun-gryappetites.Itwasreadybeforeourguestswereduetoarrivesomyhusbanddecidedweneededtoemptythepotsof gumbointoagiganticcrock-pot.Itriedtousealadletotransferthegumbo,buthewantedtodoitfastersohegrabbedupaheavy,hotpottopouritoverintothecrock-pot.Idon’tknowwhathappened,butmyhus-banddroppedthepotof hotgumbo!Ithittheceramictilefloorwithacrashandsplash.Beforeithitthefloor,itmusthavebouncedoff thestovebecausehotgumbowaseverywhere—eventheceiling!Wewerestandingingumbo.Itwasdrippingoff ourhairandfaces.Ashrimpwasdanglingfromhisglasses.Westoodlookingateachotherinconsternation,andbeneaththegumbo,IsawhisfaceturningredsoItoldhimIwouldcleanupthemesswhileheemptiedtheRainbow(vacuumthatcleanswithcirculatedwater)beforeeverybodygotthere. Mynot-so-helpfulkitchenassistantwastakingthebasinof dirtyRainbowwateroutthedoortodumpitwhenthedoorbellrang.Again,Idon’tknowhowithap-pened,buthedroppedthebasinfilledwithtwogallonsof dirtywaterrightinfrontof thedoor.Hisimmedi-ateresponsewasnotfitfortheearsof achild,buthe
openedthedoortofindthatmostof ourguestshadar-rivedatthesametime.SinceMr.SupremeMess-makerwasn’tinamoodforcheerfulwelcoming,Idrippeddarkrouxanddirtywater,smiledsweetlyandinvited,“Y’alljustslidethroughthewaterandgumbotowhereveryoucanfindacleanspot.” Idon’tthinkeverybodyatetheirfillthatThanksgiv-ingDaybecausewewereshortongumbo,butitcertain-lywasoneof themostmemorablefamilydinnerswe’veeverhad. DuetotheEditor’s Notelastissue,I’vereceivedanumberof e-mailsfromwidowswhosaythattheyhopeI’llincludearticlesandinformationfortheminfuturemagazines.Theysaywidowsandwidowersareleftoutof manyevents,targetgroups,andmediafocus.And,Ithinktheyarerightbecauseinallmyyearsasawriter,Idon’tthinkI’veeverwrittenfororaboutwidows—priortomyownwidowhood.Thisgroupisasilentbutlargeentitythatdeservessomeattention. Wegrandparentsareconsideredeasypreybecausewearepronetodoalmostanythingforourgrandchil-dren.Icallit“grannyscamming,”butitcanhappentograndfathersaswellasgrandmothers.Fortunately,IhadreadaboutitsomewherebeforeIgotthecall. “Hello,”Iansweredthephone. “Hi,Grandma,thisisBud,”hesaid.(I’musing“Bud”here,butthescammerusedtherealnameof my22-year-oldgrandson,wholivesmilesawayinanothertown.) “Bud!”Irepliedexcitedly,asIwasn’tquitesureyetthatitwasnotBud. “Haveyouheardaboutmytrip?” “No,whattrip?” “Well,IhadtocomeupheretoBaltimoreformyfriend’sfuneral.” “That’stoobad!”Iplayedalong.IknewbynowthatitwasnotBud. “Yeah,itwasunexpected.” “Bud,youdon’tsoundlikeyourself.”Ithoughtthatwouldscarehimoff,buthewasreadywithapreparedreason. “Well,Igotinacarwreckandbrokemynose.ThatmaybewhyIsounddifferent.” “That’sterrible!”Isympathizedwhilesilentlylaugh-ingtomyself.“Areyouinmuchpain?”Icontinued,becomingmoreandmoreinterestedinwhatthescam-mermightsay,andbeganlisteningforhisspiel. “No,”hereplied,“anditwasn’tmyfault,either,buttheyputmeinjail.Theyallowedmethisonephone
call,soIthoughtI’dletyouknow,andseeif youcouldsendmesomemoneysoIcanmakebailandgetoutof here.” Verygrandmotherly-like,feigningbelief andspeak-ingslowlyandthoughtfully,Isaidtohim,“Well,Honey,yougotyourself intothismess,soyou’lljusthavetogetyourself out.I’mhangingupnow,goodbye!” Hedidnotcallback. ThenIbegantryingtofigureouthowhehadgot-tenmygrandson’sname,knewIwashisgrandmother,andhadmycorrectphonenumber.Irememberedthat“Bud”hadrecentlyobtainedanewiPhoneandthatheusedittotelephoneme.IconfirmedwithhimthathelistsmeasGrandmammainhiscontacts.TheseInternetprovidercompaniesemployyoungtech-savvypeople,andIsuspecttheyhavetheabilitytoaccessthatinformation.Someof themmaynotbeaboveeitherus-ingitorsellingittoothers.Mygrandsondidnotsoundtheleastbitworriedaboutit. Theyoungergenerationseemstohaveacceptedthefactthatpersonalinfoisnolongerprivate;andthataccesstotechnology’spleasureandconvenienceout-weighstheirdesireforprivacy.

Aroseisaroseisarose,butanoldwomanisnotalwaysanoldwoman.Afavoritesayingof minecon-cerningageis,“It’snothowoldyouare,it’showyouareold.”AsAndyRooneyhassaid,“Youcan’thelpgrowingolder,butyoudon’thavetogrowold.” SoI’mwonderingwhatitisthatmakessomefolksagewellwhileothersdonot.Notmanyyearsago,if arestaurantcashieraskedme,“Areyouasenior?”I’djok-inglysay,“Howrudeof youtonotice.”Theydon’taskanymore,theyjustgivememytenpercentdiscount. Ialsowonderif one’sdispositionhasanythingtodowithaging.Iamabornoptimist,andI’vebeentoldIamsometimessohappilygiddyastomakeapersongag.EveninmysaddestdaysIcanusuallyfindsomethingtobegladabout,andIhavebeencalled“Pollyanna”manytimes.Mamataughtherchildren,“There’snothingsobaditcouldn’tbeworse.” Enteringmykitchenrecently,Iheardasizzlingnoiseandsawsmokecomingfromthedoorof thehotwatertankcloset.WhenIfoundtherewasaleakinthetankandthatthesmokewasjuststeam—andmyhousewasn’tonfire—IwassohappyIdidn’tevenmindhav-ingtobuyanewhotwatertank.Infact,Iconsideredmyself lucky. Beingpoormightmakesomefolksagelessthangracefully.Wegrewupinnearpoverty—threeboys,threegirls,anabsentfatherandaBaptistmama—andwhilewereallyweredestituteforawhile,sowasevery-onearoundus,anditdidn’tseemsobad.DuringtheGreatDepression,itwasn’tabigdealwhenwe,likemanyfamiliesweknew,wereforcedtoacceptwelfarebenefitsforatime.Nocashwasforthcoming,butwedidreceivedonationsof potatoes,driedbeans,flour,sugar,meal,bucketsof syrup,andgallonbucketsof lardandlittlepacketsof somethingsquishycalledoleomargarine.Itbecamebutterafterwestirredinyel-
lowfooddye.Ihatedthatstuff anddidn’teatevenrealbutteruntilIwasgrown.It’squiteobviousI’vemadeupforitsince. Sometimeslife’sadversitiesmakepeopleagebeforetheirtime.Mymotherwasbadlyburnedandsufferedterriblyforsixweeksuntilshedied;myhusbandwasasuicideatage47;andmybeautifuldaughterdiedof melanomacanceratage30.Somehow,Inotonlysur-vived,Igrewstronger.AndthestrongerIbecame,theyoungerIfelt. Wakingat3amrecently,Isatstraightupinbed,thinking,“Goodgosh,if Ishouldwakeupdeadonemorning,somestrangemedicwouldtakeonelookatmyelderlyremainsandnotrealizehowactivemybrainwas,howvibrantmydreamswere,orwhatpleasureIgotfromliving.Hemightsay,“Well,she’sold.She’slivedalonglife.It’stimeforhertodie.”And,thenhewillcartmeoff tothemorgue. WRONG!Itwillneverbemytime!Ilovemylife,mychildren,andmygrandchildren.Ilovemywritinggroups,myfriends,mybooks,mymusic,andIdelightingraciousdiningandgoodconversation.I’mnotnearlyreadytogiveupanyof thosewonderfulthings.Iwonderif anyoneeverfeels,“It’stime.”Ithinknot.I’monthesharpedgeof 80andIdon’tconsiderthatold,nordoIfeelold.Youwouldn’tbelievehowyoungIaminside. Aroseisaroseisarose,butanoldwomanisnotalwaysold.

Tounderstandthecostof dementia,considerthatif dementiacostswerecompanyprofits,globaldementiacosts—estimatedtobe$604billionperyear—wouldoutpaceeverycompanyontheplanetincludingExxonandApplecombined.Theseestimatedcostsareconser-vativeandrecognizedtobeunderreportedbecausetheyaredifficulttomeasure.It’sdifficulttomeasurethelosttaxrevenuesorcascadingfinancialinstabilitywhenfam-ilymembersleavetheworkplaceearlyandunder-fundtheirownretirement. Tounderstandthescopeof dementia,considerthateverynationwithanagingpopulationisfacingatick-ingtimebomb.Some,likeChina,haveexacerbatedtheproblemwithextremeeffortstocontrolbirths,leavingfeweryoungerfamilymembers,bypercentage,tocareforagingrelatives.Manyhaverightlybeenconcernedwithhowtoprovidefood,housing,energy,andhealthcareforgrowingworldpopulations.Buttheunintendedconsequenceof fewerchildrenisfewerpeopletopro-videforexplodingpopulations. Tounderstandthestatistical riskof dementia,con-
siderthatwhilemostdementiapatientsarediagnosedafterturning65,somearediagnosedorwereshowingsignsasearlyastheirfifties.After65,theriskforde-mentiadoubleseveryfiveyears.Inthefastestgrowingpopulation—those85andabove—dementiastrikesoneoutof two. Patientsandfamiliesareatthemercyof adysfunc-tionalhealthcaresystemtryingtocontrolbudgetsbymakingbenefiteligibilityrulesdifficulttoaccessorun-derstand.WehavehadtousetheopenrecordslawsinstatestoobtaininformationfromMedicaidthatbelongstothepublicandwhichMedicaidroutinelyattemptstowithhold.Wheneligibilityinformationisn’tbeinghiddenfrompublicview,itisoftenincompleteandincomprehensibletotheaveragepersonaswellasmanyprofessionals.StatesoftenaddrestrictionsthatviolatefederalguidelinesdraftedbyCongress.Whencrookscontheelderlyoutof theirsavings,werecognizetheinjustice.Whentheelderlyaredeniedinformationthatcouldkeepthemfromlosingmostof theirlife’ssavingsif theyneedlong-termcare,weshrugandcallitbureau-cracy. Makenomistake!Dementiaistheworld’sbig-gesthealthcrisisthatfamiliesdon’twanttotalkabout.Astheholidaysapproachandfamiliesgather,theyshouldtakenoticeof whoisbecomingmoreforget-ful,repeatingthingsfrequentlyorgettinglostgoingto

PaulOberlebeganscubadivingin1964,andsincethenhehasmadecloseto5,000divesallovertheworldincludingtheRedSea,Australia,and
Thailand.HeisaretiredCaptainof theShreveportFireDepartment,andin1969FireChief DallasGreenaskedhimtoestablishaSFDdiveteam,whichhedid.Today,Oberleisfeaturedinthebook,Diving With Legends. Inspiteof heartproblemsandnon-Hodgkin’slymphoma,Paullivesanactivelifewithhisfamilyandoverseeshisbusiness,TheSwimSchool,thatteachesswimmingtoallages,includingsenioradults. Itwasduringheartsurgerythathisphysiciandiscov-eredOberle’scancer,andhehasbeenapatientatM.D.AndersonCancerCenterinHouston,Texassincethen. Mostof hisinstructorsareformerstudents,andPaulcomesdowntotheschool,locatedonTexasStreet,toteachadultswimclassesacoupleof daysaweek.AnaverageweekatTheSwimSchoolseesaround600students,andinthesummertheyhave1,000studentsperweek. Paulbegandevelopinghismethodof teachingswim-mingtoadultsin1969whenhefoundthatmanyof hisscubadivingstudentscouldnotswim.AtthattimePaulownedAdventureSportsinShreveport,anInstructorCertifieraffiliatedwithScubaSchoolsInternational(SSI).Theearlydaysof scubadidnotincludeequipmentsuchasinflatablevests,thereforeswimmingskillrequirementsweremuchmorerigid.Pauldiscoveredthatbyinitiallyputtinganon-swimmerinvest,mask,snorkel,andfinstodeveloptheirconfidence,andthenreversingtheprocess
andremovingtheequipmentonepieceatatime,aper-sonlearnedtoswimwithconfidence.HehadhisstudentsbeginbywearingaBeginner’sSafetyVest(BSV)withwhichtheycouldnotpossiblysink,whilelearningthefreestyleandmorein-watertech-niqueswhichbuiltupaswimmer’sconfidence. TheSwimSchoolofferstwolevelsof adultswimlessons:AdvancedSwimmersgrouplessonsdesignedforadultswhocanswimbutwanttobecomebetterswimmers—inthislevel,swimmersareintroducedtoallfourcompetitiveswimstrokes;andBeginnerSwimmerlessonsforadultswhocannotswimandwhomaynotbe

withhergrownchildrenonthisdayof days.Shejustfloatedaroundthegroup,backandforth,takingevery-thingin.Therewasnotalotof touchingorhugging.Shewasjustcontentthatwewerethere.Andprobablythinkingof howshewouldbragtoherfriendsthenextweek. Aboutfouro’clockintheafternoon,Mamaalwaysbecamerestless,walkingaroundoutside,checkingoutthecarstoseewhowasn’tblockedinthatshecouldasktodriveherthetwelvemileshome.Shehadhadherday,shehadseenallherchildren,andshewasreadytogo. BeforemovingtoShreveport,VickiLebrunandherhusbandBillylivedinasmallhousefilledwithVictorianfur-niturethatVickihadcollectedovermanyyears.TheirhomeinVivian,Louisiana,wasnextdoortohermother’shome,alsofilledwithacollectionof turn-of-the-20th-Centurytables,chairs,andbric-a-brac.Vickidreamedforyearsof livinginatrueVictorianhousewherehercollectioncouldbeenjoyedandshowcasedtoitsbestadvantage. AlthoughshelivedinVivian,VickiworkedinShreveportandfromtimetotimewoulddrivepastthelarge,desertedhouseat725AustinPlaceknownas“theLoganMansion.”Thehousehadbeenvacantandunattendedformorethansixyearswhenin2005onawhim,Vickicontactedtheownertoseeif hewouldbeinterestedinselling.Thoughreluctantatfirst,asfatewouldhaveit,theowneragreedtosell,believingthatVickiandBillyLebrunweretherightpeopletorestorethehousetoitsoriginalbeauty.WhentheLebrunsboughtthehouse;wornshagrugscoveredtheexquisiteparquetfloors,fluorescentlightshungfromitstallceilings,andasteeldeskwastheonlypieceof furnitureinthehouse.Noneof theoriginalfurnishingremainedinthehouseandsomeof thefixtures,mantels,fireplacegrates,andstainedglasswindowshadbeenremovedorvandalized.Pilesof coaldustinthefireplaces,brokenandboardedwindows,tornwallpaper,andpigeondroppingsgreetedthenew
owners.BillyandVickicontactedpreviousownerswhohadremovedsomeof thestainedglasswindowsandconvincedthemtoreturnthewindowsbacktothehouse. Anotherarti-factthattheLebrunslocatedwasthenewelpostlampfromthegrandstaircase,seeninoldphotosof thehomebutmissing
whentheypurchasedthehouse.Vicki’ssteadfastnesswasrewardedwhenthelampwaslocatedstoredinabarninArkansas.TheLebrunspurchasedandrein-stalledthelampinitsoriginalplaceonthepostof themahoganystaircase.Sevenyearslater,theLebrunshaveturnedtheonce-abandonedhouseintotheirhome.TheyarerestoringtheQueenAnnehouseoneroomatatime,doingmostof theworkthemselves.Althoughallseventeenroomsinthehousearenotyetrenovated,Vickiisgladtoshowvisitorstherestoreddownstairsparlor,library,diningroomandkitchen,andupstairsmasterbedroomandguestbedroomandbaths,alongwithroomsthatarestillworksinprogress.Thehome,withrefurbishedwallcoverings,isfilledwithVickiandhermother’scollec-tionof Victorianfurniture,accentpieces,lamps,perioddraperies,andpaintings.TheLebrunsenjoysharingthehistoryof theman-sionandofferguidedtoursof thehome.Theyliketoencourageotherswhoareinterestedinrestorationprojects.“Ilovetosharethebeautyof thehouseandencourageotherstonotgiveupontheirdreams,”Vicki

said.“Sometimesthetasksseemoverwhelming,buttheendresultsareworththeefforts.”Thehousewasoriginallybuiltin1897byLafayetteRobertLoganandhiswife,Libby.Thoughthehomehashadnumerousresidentialownersandvariousotheruses,includingaresidentialrentalhouse,aboardinghouseforteachers,achurchyouthcenter,aradiosta-tion,andaneighborhoodrescuemission,thefloorplanof thethreestoryhomeisexactlyasthearchitectde-signed.ThelateShreveporthistorianEricBrockwroteinanarticlethattheLoganMansionis“thegrandestsurvivingworkof NathanielSykesAllen,Shreveport’spremierlatenineteenthcenturyarchitect.”(ForumNewsMagazine,October3,2001)WhentheLogansbuiltthehouse,noexpensewasspared.Awealthybeerdistributorandicemerchant,Loganimportedbird’seyemaplefortheparquetfloors,mahoganyforthegrandstaircase,andcurlypineandburledwalnutforthepanelingandpocketdoors.Miraculously,noneof thewoodinthehousewaseverpaintedoverandisinexcellentcondition,retainingtheoriginaleleganceandbeauty.Attheturnof thecenturywhenhomesof promi-nentShreveporterssurroundedthedowntownarea,theLoganhomewasavenueforsocialeventsandmeetings,withatleastonehistoricalaccountof afamilymember’sweddingtakingplaceonthegrandstaircaseintheentrancehall.Weddingsareagainontheagendaforthebeautifuloldmansion.TheLebruns’sonwasmar-riedonthefrontporchof thehomeinAugustof thisyearandmoreweddingsarescheduledforthefuture.InadditiontobeingtheresidencefortheLebruns,themansionisagreatplaceforcateredchildren’sbirthdayparties.Vickisetsaneleganttablewithspecialbirthdaychinaandcrystal.Littlegirlsselectfromanarrayof dress-upclothesforastyleshowandteaparty.Fortheboys,thepartythemeisSherlockHolmes,withtheappropriateattiresupplied.Cluesaregivenandthechildrentreasurehuntfortheirpartyfavors.TheLeb-runsencourageparentstostayforthepartiesandenjoytheexcitementof exploringthemansion.Duringtheholidayseason,VickidecoratesthehousewithlargeChristmastreesineachroomandhercollec-tionof Victorianornamentsandfloralarrangements.Thisyear’sdatesaresetforherannualChristmastoursforSaturday,December22andSunday,December23.Toursstartat2:00pmand6:30pmonbothdaysand

Vicki Lebrun has loved Victorian period furniture for many years prior to moving into the Logan Mansion, and the parlor is the perfect
setting for her collection. When the Lebruns purchased the Logan Mansion, its parquet floors were covered with shag carpet.
The carpet probably helped preserve the floors’ original beauty.

DeanandDorothyMuligcelebratedtheir57thanniversarywhiletheytouredHawaiiwithagroupof 51Shreveport/Bossier-areasenioradults. WhentheyarrivedinHonolulu,theyweretakenbybustothehotelandsawmanybeautifulflowersandexotic-lookingtreesalongtheway.Amongtheirmanyactivities,theywentonatourof aDolePineapplePlantation;visitedtheKilaueaVolcano,ablacklavaflowareathattheywereabletowalkon;andtouredmanybeautifulwhitesandandblacksandbeaches.Thewaterwasdifferentshadesof blue. Theyboardedacruiseshiptotourtheislandsof Maui,Kona,Kauai,thenbacktoHonolulu.TheylearnedthatMacadamianutsisHawaii’smajorcrop,replacingpineappleandsugarcane. TheyalsovisitedPearlHarborwheretheyviewedoldnewsreelscenesof thebombingof PearlHarbor;andtheyweretakenouttotheUSSArizonaMemorial.Thiswasaverytouchingtimeforthisgroupbecausetherewereseveralveteransamongthem. Eachpersonwasabletopickandchooseotherexcursionsdur-ingeachislandstop.SomechoicesweretoattendaLuau,takeheli-copterflights,watchHawaiianstyledancing,andgoscubadiving.

Chappyunloadedtheracecarfromhis40’trailer(he’ddoanythingforhisgranddaughter)andcheerfullyreloadeditwithallthecollegeapartmentgoodies.WethenheadedouttoTara’shometoloadmoretreasuresandbeganthecaravantoMonticello,Ark.…homeof theUniversityof Arkansas-MonticelloBollWeevils!!! MuchtoChappy’sdelight,Peyton’sroommate,Bonnie,hadlinedupsomeunloadinghelp.Herboy-friendandacoupleof hisbuddiesweretheretodotheheavy-liftingpart.Thetrailerwasquicklyemptied,andweweresoonplacingfurnitureand“decorating.”Asthedayworeon,Bonnieandthemoverswerebusyputtingherbedroomtogetherwhiletherestof uswereworkingonPeyton’sbedroomandtherestof theapartment. Attheendof theday,Bonnieremarkedthatherroom,“didn’tlooklikemuch.”Oneof themov-erssaid—ashewalkedfromBonnie’sbedroomtoPeyton’s—“Yourroomlooksgood,Bonnie…andyourroommate’smotherisMarthaStewart!” IsmiledasIrealizedanotherof life’smilestoneswascomplete.NotonlyhaveIsuccessfullypassedalongmyMother’sobsessive/compulsivetendenciestomy

WolfeMemoriesChristmas Christmasof mychildhoodmemoriesincludethelonghikesinmygaloshesupthehilloutonourplacelookingfortheperfecttree,withmybrothercarryingtheax,andMamaandmepickingarmloadsof red-berriedbranchestodecoratewithwhenwegothome.Irememberthescentof cedarandpinethroughoutthehousebecauseof thetreeandothercuttingswebroughthomefromthehill.Thetreehadtobejustright,atleastsixfeettall,butneverfullandbushyliketheonessomepeopleprefer.It,usuallyapinetree,hadtobeshapedacertainwaywithenoughspacesbe-tweenthelimbstoallowlightsandornamentstoshowthroughfromallsides. ThetreestandDaddyusedwasreallyaheavytruck-wheelhubturnedsotheholewouldaccommo-dateatreetrunk,whichhesecuredbypound-ingwoodenshimsinallaroundthebase. The“silverbells”weremadeof paperDixiecups,andwhatfunwehadpaintingthemsilver,stringingthemwithaneedleandthread,andhangingthemup-sidedownfromthetreebranches.Wemadeorna-mentsbysprayingsweet-gumballswithgoldandsilverpaintandtyingthreadsonthemsothey’dhangprop-erly.Fluffy,realistic-lookingsnowweflockedthetreewithwasmadefromaboxfulof IvoryFlakesandwater,whippedwithahand-turnedeggbeateruntilitwassothickwecouldscoopitupwithourhandsandlayitonthebranches. TherewasamangersceneIplayedwitheachyear,arrangingallthetinyfigurinesjustso,thenre-arrangingthemseveraltimestogivealltheangels,animals,andwisemenagoodviewof Mary,Joseph,andthebabyJesus.Asugarplumtreealwayssatontopof therefrig-erator.The“tree”wasathornbushlimbthatMama
somehowsecuredtoabase,sprayedwhite,andtippedeveryoneof thenearlytwo-inch-longthornswithmulti-colored,frosty-looking,pastelgumdrops. Eveningswerespentaroundourkitchentableshell-ingpecanspickedupoutof theyardtoputinfudgethathadtobecookedtothe“justright”temperature.Thefudgewastestedwhenatinybitof bubblingchoc-olatedroppedintoabowlof waterwouldformalittleball,indicatingitwasreadyforbutterandvanilla.Thenitcooledsomemore,wasbeatsmooth‘tilyouthoughtyourarmwouldbreak,nutswereadded,andthecandywasdroppedbyspoonfulsontothewaxedpaper. Shimmeringreflectionsof lightedcandlesplacedneartheglass-toptable—decoratedwithred-berriedgreeneryandahammeredaluminumpunchbowllined
withdeepblueporce-lain—wasfilledwithdeli-cioushomemadeeggnogandringedwithadozencranberry-coloredhandle-lessglasscupsthatcaughtthelights.NotestoSantaClauswere“mailed”byfloatingthemupthechimneyinthedraftof aroaringfire. WehungGranny’slong,opaque,blackstock-
ingsbythefireplaceuntilChristmasmorning,whenwefoundthemalllumpy,filledwithlargeoranges,grape-fruits,kumquats,andotherraretreatsnotthencom-monlyavailableatoursmalllocalstoresintheNorth-westMississippiDelta. WhenItappedintomemorybanksof Christmasespast,thesementalpicturescametomefastandfuri-ously,floodingmymindquickerthanIcouldwritethemdown.Later,Irememberedafewgiftsreceived;butitissignificantthatthefirstthingstoemergefromthesubconsciouswerenotvisionsof gifts,butrather,simpleitemsandactivitiesof theseasonthat,evennow,aretreasuredChristmasmemories.
