SPRING 2011 Defining your legacy PRIME TIME Remember Loaves & Fishes Centers in your estate plan, and help provide food and comfort to seniors in our community for years to come. Dorothy Bebek delivered Meals-On-Wheels for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for many years. In fact, as secretary to Neil Kelly Company President Tom Kelly, she coordinated all of the employees who delivered Meals-On-Wheels. She even convinced her son, Steve, to start delivering meals for our Two Rivers Center. Dorothy was a person of modest means, but great commitment to our vision that no senior will go hungry or experience social isolation. When she passed away recently, she left a legacy gift of $50,000 to Loaves & Fishes Centers. This was a gift she could never have made during her lifetime. Martha Rosacker had no personal connection to Loaves & Fishes Centers. But when she drew up her will, she was looking for a “good cause” and decided to leave a portion of her estate to Loaves & Fishes Centers to make sure we could continue to deliver hot meals to area seniors. That’s how we received her gift following her passing last year. You might be a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer or perhaps you have received meals from us. Think about including Loaves & Fishes Centers in your estate planning and defining your legacy. Maybe you need help creating a will, or would like someone to review your current estate documents. In either case, Loaves & Fishes Centers has resource material, and confidential planning assistance, that is free for those who need it. Please consider remembering us in your will or estate plan. Defining your legacy

PRIMETIMERemember Loaves & Fishes Centers in your estate plan, and help provide food and comfort to seniors in our community for years to come.Dorothy Bebek delivered Meals-On-Wheels for the Martin Luther King, Jr.

But when she drew up

her will, she was looking for a “good cause” and decided to leave a portion of her estate to Loaves & Fishes Centers to make sure we could continue to deliver hot meals to area seniors.

It’s easy to do and your gift will continue providing hot meals to seniors for many years to come. Anyone can leave a legacy—even you! For more information about leaving a legacy gift, contact Andrea Bruno at [email protected] or 503.953.8133.

Rose Festival Princess delivers mealsSeniors in downtown Portland may not know it, but they receive meals delivered by royalty: Heidi Henderson, Rose Festival Princess from Central Catholic High School. Here’s how she describes her experience:

“Every weekend I deliver Meals-On-Wheels. I drive along Burnside passing groups of homeless people waiting for food. There is a particular person on the downtown route who lives above Voodoo Donuts. There is always a long line of people waiting outside for a treat. Yet upstairs, there is a lonely, blind war veteran who struggles to survive. I always stop to chat for a few minutes. Unfortunately, there are more meals to deliver. When I leave, I look at the long line and wonder, ‘What would these people

do if they knew about the hungry people just 20 feet away?’

“Let’s all take a moment to think about how we can add to what we have. It doesn’t take super humans, tons of money or lots of extra time, compassion or love. Start with a smile or simply saying ‘hello’. Changing our community is only a matter of finding the inner confidence to do so.”

Congratulations Princess Heidi and thanks for serving seniors in need!

What would these people do if they knew about the hungry people just 20 feet away?

Eco-friendly trays better for our planetWe continue to look for ways to reduce our carbon footprint. That’s why we recently adopted the daily use of eco-friendly trays for meals. Manufactured by Bamboo Eco-Enterprises in Clackamas, the black three-compartment trays were manufactured specifically for Loaves & Fishes Centers to meet the specifications of our equipment and are made from 47 percent corn starch. We use 2,700 trays each weekday to serve homebound seniors throughout the greater metropolitan area.

“We knew we needed to get away from a polystyrene product, but until recently, there was no other product on the market that held heat as well and was cost-effective,” said Food Services Manager Tom Maier. “With these new trays, we are able to use a locally-made product made from renewable materials and save the organization $39,000 a year in packaging costs. It’s a win for the environment and a win for the bottom line.”

Stay ConnectedMore than a MealNoah Wasserman dines at the Belmont Center several days each week. “It’s not what Frank Sinatra would have had for lunch, but it’s good,” Noah says with a laugh. “The Belmont Center has become a focus in my day. The meals are important to me, but it’s the companionship that means the most.”

Fresh is bestThis spring and summer, diners at all of our 34 meal centers will enjoy more raw, roasted, steamed and sautéed vegetables at lunch. As we move into garden season, we are replacing prepackaged and frozen vegetables with all fresh produce.

Our kitchen staff participated in a special training session recently with guest Chef Bill Sterling from Hawthorne New Seasons Market, to learn new preparation and enhancement techniques. In addition, entrée salads have been added as an option in all dining rooms. It is anticipated that 300 to 400 pounds of fresh produce will be used weekly.

The move to fresh produce comes on the heels of the January 2011 release of new USDA/DHHS Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The new Guidelines encourage Americans to eat more

healthy food, like fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains.

Hazel, one of our Meals-On-Wheels

clients, had this to say, “My doctor told me I

was anemic and not eating enough vegetables. My son talked me into signing up for Meals-On-Wheels. It is just the best! The food is always good and I always get a vegetable or two. Now my health is much better.”

From the Executive DirectorSome people, who are touched by our services during their lives, have left gifts in their estates to be used to continue our mission of providing nutritious meals and social contact for seniors. During the past two years of economic challenges, these special bequests have made a significant difference in allowing us to maintain services to so many in need of nutritional support.

We have created the Jean Wade Society to recognize the individuals who have left a legacy gift to support future needs. Jean Wade was the original Multnomah County Health Department worker who identified the increased health risk of homebound seniors due to malnutrition. Some of our Jean Wade Society donors were beloved volunteers or cherished clients who experienced long relationships with Loaves & Fishes Centers, including Jim Durkheimer, Elinore Nudelman, Mrs. Charles Shi, Dorothy Bebek and Maybelle Clark Macdonald. It is

as though these volunteers are still with us to continue their work.

Some gifts come to us from people we have never met, like Mr. and Mrs. Rosacker. Our mission had personally touched someone dear to them or our vision that no senior will go hungry or experience social isolation resonated with their beliefs.

These legacy donors play a key role in making the difference during the difficult budget stretches. Their thoughtful gifts cushion the bumps and ensure the legacy that Loaves & Fishes Centers will not turn away a senior who requests a meal.

Consider remembering Loaves & Fishes Centers in your estate plan. It’s an easy way to leave a legacy and make an impact in ways you may never have thought possible.

A sincere thank you to all of you who are members of the Jean Wade Society and have remembered Loaves & Fishes Centers in your estate plan.

Our volunteers delivered nearly 4,000 Valentine-A-Grams throughout the metro area on Valentine’s Day, as well as 2,700 senior Valentine treats to our homebound seniors. We want to thank all who participated by donating products, purchasing a senior treat or volunteering to deliver. And a big shout-out goes to Steve Foltz and John Whittaker, and to our corporate sponsors Cinnabon, Jamba Juice, NW Natural, Seattle’s Best Coffee,

Thank you Valentine-A-Gram supporters!

Food Services of America, Sun Orchard Premium Juices, Sharis Restaurant and Pies, Stevens Printing and 1190 KEX. The sponsors donated their time and products to prepare and package these delicious boxes of goodies. Thanks again!

Giving comes full circlePat Earnest doesn’t drive. But that did not stop her from delivering meals to homebound seniors. In fact, Pat and two friends delivered our very first meals in February 1970. They heard about a new hot meal program for seniors that was starting in the basement of the Lincoln Street Methodist Church and came to volunteer.

“We had about 20 people who came in for lunch during those first few weeks,” Pat said. “I told the girls, ‘There are some folks down the street who can’t get out and would probably like a hot meal. Let’s wrap some up and walk over there.’ So we did!” Pat volunteered to serve and deliver meals weekly for several

years at the Lincoln Street location and then at our former location at Sunnyside.

Pat is 87 now and her husband, Jack, is 86. They still live in the house they built in 1950 and, for the past several months, Pat herself has received Meals-On-Wheels.

“I know how much our meals helped people in the years I volunteered,” Pat said. “And the meals we receive help us out now. Jack can concentrate on making me a good breakfast knowing we’ll get a balanced meal at noon.”

Thanks, Pat, for serving seniors for so many years. It’s our pleasure to serve you now!

Loaves & Fishes Centers four-star ratedCharity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator, gave Loaves & Fishes Centers another four star rating, the highest rating possible, for its financial health as a nonprofit organization.

Charity Navigator evaluates nonprofit organizations on two broad areas of financial health: their organizational efficiency and their organizational capacity. They use a set of financial ratios or performance categories to rate each of these two areas, and then issue an overall rating that combines the organization’s performance in both areas. The ratings show donors how efficiently a charity will use their gifts today, and to what extent the charity is growing

its programs and services over time. Ratings are provided so that donors can make intelligent giving decisions, and so that the philanthropic community can more effectively monitor itself. We work consistently to earn a four star rating.
