This report, the Prime Bank Foundation’s third compre-hensive CSR Report, captures the actions we are taking today that are shaping a sustainable future. It highlights our achievements and portrays the performance trends of past few years from which we will grow further and improve as we continue to evolve from a non- profit subsidiary of Prime Bank for its CSR activities to one of the leading sustainable development organisations for making significant contributions in the country’s development process focusing more on education, health and a few other areas of social, environmental and community problems. PBF is dedicated to being a high-performing organisation built on the foundation of a diverse and inclusive workforce, with individuals and teams working to blend a wide range of talents, experiences and perspectives in pursuit of shared purposes. A culture that strengthens this foundation is essential to unlock individual potential and build social business success. Sustainability principles are the framework that guides how we develop and provide solutions to common social and community problems we focus on for our target populations in a manner that tailored to their needs and rewards them. Within this framework we examine what we do – our operations and our service’s end use – and seek better solutions to the economic and societal needs we prioritise. As Prime Bank’s non-profit subsidiary, Prime Bank Foundation has a unique role to play, providing leadership and making a difference for CSR in the country. For us, it is all about meeting some of the basic needs. We have always focused on providing and/or making need based services available for our priority target population. Now, we are expanding our field of vision to include the challenging realities of our country’s huge unmet needs and our understanding of the relationships among economic, natural and human systems. Getting these basic needs also requires us to think beyond the usual boundaries of our work. PBF’s evolution is progressing at an opportune time as we face economic and social challenges. We believe that PBF may be the nexus of good solutions to these challenges – solutions that successfully address the intersections of costs and the availability of services. As we progress toward our responsibility for our society and its people, we will keep you apprised of our performance. Starting in 2009, we will be reflecting on our key CSR performance indicators on a regular basis. We believe this represents an evolution in our CSR reporting process from static data presentation to dynamic information exchange; from corporate statement to visible outcome and impact on beneficiaries; and from statistical figures to testimonies. In addition, this level of disclosure and reporting will provide invaluable feedback loops to help us achieve the goals set in our long term CSR strategy. We look forward to your comments and feedback about this report and your engagement with us as our transformation continues. Sincerely yours, Dr. Iqbal Anwar Chief Executive Officer Dr . Prime Bank Foundation’s commitment to CSR is grounded

in the values that define our community: humanity, humility,

veracity and excellence. Keeping the consistency with the

past two years, in the reporting period, the focus has been

identical with the ethics of service—the desire to share our

strength for the common good.

Commitment, collaboration, stewardship and growth are

the pillars on which Prime Bank Foundation team was built.

It is now our bequest of progress and innovation, blended

with diverse experiences that have lead to our success to

date. It is our exchange of ideas and our ability to

implement them that will continue to fuel our growth into the

future. We are passionate about investing our skills, ideas,

and energy to create positive change on a local and

national scale. We also realise that good financial support/

investment builds capacity and makes an enduring impact.

Listed below are some of the projects Prime Bank

Foundation is proud to continue to implement with direct

support.

Education Support Programme

Taking education as a tool for social change, Prime Bank

Foundation is proud to have another year of success of its

Education Support Programme launched in 2007 to

remove the access barriers of many economic hardship-hit

deserving students to their desired level of education.

It is a long term, renewable scholarship programme for

underprivileged but meritorious students from across the

country for persuasion of their graduation/post-graduation

level studies rather than providing one time recognition

awards to good performers. Through this project, we

engage to build self-esteem and capabilities to make

career, educational and life-changing journey. Throughout

the year, PBF treks promote mentoring relationships

needed for inspirational services for the students. In order

to keep the continuity of triumphs of the first and second

year of the programme, in the third year i.e. in the reporting

year, another 198 underprivileged but meritorious students,

the highest in one year since its inception, have been

included to provide with financial support in the form of

monthly stipends for the persuasion of their

graduation/post-graduation level studies in the country’s

public sector universities and medical/engineering/

agriculture colleges. With the inclusion of these students,

the total number of poor but meritorious students who

are the recipients of Prime Bank Foundation stipends

stood at 490.

For awarding stipends in 2009, same processes for inviting

applications from potential poor but meritorious students

through advertisement in the country’s leading national

dailies and their selection by the Foundation’s Advisory

Committee were followed.

The first instalment of stipends of all those studentsselected in 2009 was handed over through a formal awardgiving ceremony organised on August 18, 2009 at BIAMFoundation, New Eskaton, Dhaka. Prime Campus

Prime Campus, an English medium school in Uttara,Dhaka, was created by Prime Bank Foundation in 2008 asan alternative to the expensive English primary school thatis the standard in Bangladesh. If a school of the samequality, yet offering much lower admission and tuition rates, could be established, and then replicated throughout thecountry, more children would enjoy the educationaladvantages now available to relatively few and economicand social conditions would consequently improve. Theschool employs an interactive, holistic teachingmethodology, the key to its educational quality. Based onWestern theory and practice, this unique approach fosterscharacter development and thinking and problem solvingskills, rather than mere acquirement of facts. PrimeCampus is now mid-way through its second year. Thoughcertain challenges will need to be met, there are goodindications that the school is on course for the realization ofPBF's vision for it.

Prime Campus has been growing and improving steadily. The enrollment increased nearly 140%, from 25 to 60,between the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. A secondKG class and a new level, Class 1, were added in thesecond year. These increases have meant expandedfacilities such as a second school bus, two newclassrooms, and some 140 new library books, journals, andinstructional aids acquired through the Asia FoundationBooks Program. The expansion of the library was alsodesigned to accommodate future classes. In October of2009, experienced teachers dedicated to the field ofeducation were hired in the place of several classroomteachers. In spite of some drawbacks, the change appearsto have been a major step forward. The new faculty hasshown great interest in implementing the aims andpractices of the interactive methodology as presented bytheir teacher-trainers. Another recent development wasthe recruitment of a new Administrative Officer inNovember. New services and activities are beingintroduced. The school hosted an art competition on thetheme Bengali New Year's Day in the Eyes of the Childrenon April 10, 2009. More than fifty children participated. Anafter-school recreation period for Prime Campus studentstwo days per week and staff workshops on first aid led byhealth care professionals are in the planning stages.Parents' testimony generally suggests that the school isliving up to expectations. The three parents recentlyinterviewed whose children attend Class 1 all reported thatthey were satisfied with the school. A parent of a KGstudent indicated that he was “very happy” about the wayhis child is getting a good foundation for the future. “Theschool makes him disciplined, confident, and responsible,”he said. Another KG student's parent responded “very

good, excellent” when asked about his impression of PrimeCampus. He was especially pleased with his son's interestin speaking English. One matter of concern was thereplacement of his son's teacher during the fall, 2009semester. A Nursery student's parent commented on themarked increase in her daughter's interest in coming toschool and in learning since her enrollment here. Anotherparent whose child is in Nursery class said that sheappreciates the way students are not subjected to a lot ofpressure, but “are learning through fun and loving care.”

These are promising signs. In order for Prime Campus tofulfill the purpose for which it was designed, however, atleast two important requirements must be met. First, asystem for the professional training of new teaching staff inthe interactive, holistic pedagogy will have to be in place ifthe school and those to be established on its model are toprovide quality education in the years ahead. If a teachertraining institute involving a year of instruction and aclassroom practicum were established, a pool of well-qualified teachers would be available to fill the growingnumber of teaching positions. Second, a greaterpercentage of the students will need to come from lower-income families if Prime Campus is to fully achieve itsmission of providing quality English medium education tothose unable to afford it. Less than half of the families ofthe current student body apparently belong to the lowermiddle class. To help address this situation, theadministration plans to advertise heavily in lower-incomeneighborhoods during its enrollment drive for the 2010-11sessions.

The future holds immense promise for this recent PBF

project. At a year and a half, Prime Campus has the

vitality of a growing, dynamic institution capable of meeting

whatever challenges lie ahead.

Prime Bank Foundation

Our commitment to corporate social responsibility ensureswe remain true to our heritage of integrity; maintain a long-term point of view to make economically sound, environmentally responsible and socially supportivedecisions. More specifically, we maintain an unwavering

commitment to honesty, integrity and fairness in all ourCSR practices; show compassion by becoming involvedwith and supporting local and national communities; andconsistently act in a manner that fosters our stewardshipand sustainability.

Our vision and values are national where the efforts and

partnerships are local. Enduring change is created by

collaboration with people and organisations that offer

wisdom, challenge and leadership. These relationships are

marked by shared values and aligned purpose. Together,

we ensure a common vision, real measures of impact and

continued engagement and sustainability. At our core is a

belief in the power of people to transform their communities

and make a difference in the country. We know that how we

do our work has a direct effect on the communities where

we live and work. We have an opportunity to make it better.

We would be foolish not to try. And if we engage with our

stakeholders in service, our positive impact is only

multiplied.

During calendar year 2009, the transition of Foundation’sapproach from short term to medium and long termsolutions for the problems it intends to address led us toanalyse current capabilities, prioritise and strategisechoices. These were the outcomes of an important eventorganised by Prime Bank Foundation titled as“Brainstorming Session to Set CSR Prioritise and theirModalities for Materialisation”. The overall aim of thebrainstorming session was to strategise plans forimplementing sustainable projects/programme tailored tothe needs of the people of the country focusing more onthe underprivileged and excluded segments of thepopulation through participation of key stakeholders. Thesession being moderated by Dr. Abu Jamil Faisel, Country

Director, EngenderHealth, Bangladesh Country Office wasparticipated by a very good mix of participants representingPrime Bank’s Board of Directors, UN Bodies, INGOs, CivilSociety, Media, Social thinkers and Senior Management ofboth Prime Bank and Foundation. Dr. Atiur Rahman,Governor Bangladesh Bank appreciating the idea oforganising such a brainstorming session graced the eventas chief guest where Mr. Azam J Chowdhury, Chairman,Prime Bank Limited and Foundation being in the chair gavea briefing highlighting background, aim, purpose andexpected outcome of the event. Through greaterstakeholder awareness, participation and futurecollaboration, we intend to demonstrate transformativevalue to our priority target groups.

The chairperson said while briefing “Why is this very

important seminar? Because we think that in this seminar

we will be able to come up with certain very specific

recommendations that could be implemented in the days

ahead which can benefit the underserved and the

underprivileged people in this country. It is a customary

practice that I have to give you a little bit background of the

Bank; I will not bore the Governor who is always supportive

in all our functions in the financial sector, something for

which we all should show gratitude to him. Perhaps the

time has come to us to arrange such brainstorming session

and to try to find out how effectively the financial institutions

can synergise themselves and can set up an impact on

social attitudes.”

The Governor, Bangladesh Bank in his inaugural speech

said, “I’m much gratified to know that Prime Bank Ltd. has

sponsored such a Foundation to exert Corporate Social

Responsibility through ensuring basic needs, the education

and healthcare in particular, for the underprivileged section

of our society. This indicates that financial institutions are

gradually moving into mainstream development beyond

conventional relief and distress related activities while

pursuing their CSR strategy. Today’s brainstorming session

on prioritisation of CSR organized by Prime Bank is indeed

a timely move from this strategic interest of the central

bank. Finally, may I remind all of our corporate friends and

others present here that we need to be engaged in CSR

activities for our self interest. We have to commit ourselves

for an inclusive growth process which has not only an

ethical dimension but also an element of self interest which

covers the long term goal of sustainable development for all

of us. Let me congratulate the Prime Bank Foundation for

arranging this occasion on CSR priorities. I wish all success

of the programme.”

Summary of the Discussion

One of the general themes proposed by the

participants is that any CSR activity should focus in

some way or other capacity building, poverty

reduction and violence against women. The ideas

and suggestions put forward by the participants of

the brainstorming session are categorised in the

following groups:

1. Investment in education: Teacher training

institutes; setting up schools and colleges;

support universities; provide stipend/scholarship

not in cash but in kind; disabled children's

education; leadership training etc.

2. Work with handicap population: Investment in

eradicating and preventing different disabilities

such as drug addicts, blindness etc; setting up

vocational training centers; undertake mass

awareness raising campaigns etc.

3. Health care: Support setting up state of the art

hospital like Vellore CMC Health Care, universal

health care centers; eye hospitals; health

support to garment workers; more preventive

activities; infant, child feeding and

breastfeeding; support to facilities providing

treatment and care of non-communicable diseases

such as heart, and diabetes; activities related to

prevention of maternal mortality and morbidities;

setting up trauma centers etc.

4. Health management: Developing SOPs; improvingsupervision; leadership training; nursing training;setting up accrediting body in the private sector;provide equipment to existing voluntary health facilitiesetc. Develop a CSR strategy of PBF, partnershipsupport has been offered by one organization.

5. Environment: Activities related to the prevention ofenvironment degradation; support people living in thecoastal and ‘char’ areas; carbon trading etc.
