English Focus: Questions and Statements

Monday What different questioning words can you think of? They would be found at the beginning of a questioning sentence e.g. What, why, when, how etc. Use some of these words to

rehearse some questions verbally e.g. Why am I not allowed an ice-cream? Explain that all questions have to end with a question mark. Using a piece of paper draw a huge

question mark in the middle and write all the different question words around it. You can use these throughout the week to help you think of different ways to start your

questions.

Tuesday Think about a member of your family that you would like to interview. What questions could you ask them? Can you use every question word that you thought of yesterday? They could be as simple as How old are you? What is your favourite food? Or a little more crazy such as.. Have you ever had a Mohawk hair style? There is a super guide on www.bbcbitesize.co.uk click on Keystage one, English, Grammar, how to write questions.https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zrqqtfr/articles/z2xdng8

Think of 5- 10 questions and then at get all of your answers! The sentence after the question is called a statement. It is a normal sentence. Can you answer your questions using a statement? Use your ‘Questioning words’ word bank that you made yesterday to help you start each question differently. e.g. Q When you were little were you able to do a cartwheel? Yes I could do a cartwheel when I was younger. Q Can you do the dance move ‘the caterpillar? No I can’t do this dance move because my arms are not strong enough.

As a challenge can you use a conjunction in your statement sentence?

Have a look at your questions from yesterday. Are there any that could be a little clearer or a bit more exciting? Did you remember all your capital letters and question marks? Are there any spellings that you could improve? Any words that you could ‘magpie’ and make more interesting?Edit your questions, make sure you have a variety of question words and that they are fun! Did you complete the challenge from yesterday and use a statement and conjunction?

You could use a green pen like we do at school!Thursday Have fun playing your Quiz with other members of your family. Perhaps you could play it

with some of your relatives via FaceTime. Can you read your questions out in a clear voice? What could you use as a timer? What are the rules? How many points do you get for each correct answer? What happens if they get a question incorrect? Do they lose points? Have fun! If you wish to, you could write some of these rules out, if not talk them through with your grown up!

Super Challenge- Can you create your own quiz about any historic buildings that you learnt about? Use the facts that you found out form the internet and create 5 or 8 super questions. We would love to see some of these quiz’s and see if we could answer the questions so please do send them via e-mail to us!

Have a super week!
