Why are we talking about this? What do you think

about this?

This summer, 145 days before

Christmas Day, a famous department store called Selfridges

opened its Christmas shop and

started selling Christmas products,

like tinsel and Christmas pudding.

“Woohoo bring

on Christmas! It’s

never too early!”

“Um…Seems a

bit ridiculous. Bit

early isn’t it?”

Why are we talking about this?

Each year, stories are written in

the newspaper about when

the right time is to start

preparing for and celebrating

Christmas.

Some think switching on lights

and eating mince pies too

early makes the day less

special and spoils it. Others

think there is no such thing as

too early when it comes to

getting festive!

If you celebrate

Christmas, when

does your family

start preparing?

Festive:Feeling

happy for a

special

occasion.

What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas is a very special time for many

people for lots of different reasons.

Although it is Christian observance, it is celebrated by many people who

are not religious. Lots of people will

buy an Advent calendar or put a tree up to get into the Christmas spirit.

For everyone in the UK,

Christmas Day is a holiday, which means people get

to enjoy spending time with family and relaxing.

When should celebrations start?

Advent means 'coming' and it's the period before Christmas

which celebrates the birth of

Jesus, who Christians believe to be the son of God. It’s all about

preparing for Christmas day!

The season of Advent starts the

fourth Sunday before Christmas. This year it started on the 2nd

December. Generally, this is

when Christmas celebrations and

preparations begin for Christians.

We are currently in Advent, an important part of the Christian calendar.

Some Christians may

choose to burn an advent

candle. They also attend

carol concerts.

When should celebrations start?

Starting Christmas too early, or celebrating it too much, could be a bad thing. It

could make the day less special. What do you think?

• Shops shouldn't start selling

Christmassy things or putting up

lights and decorations until a few

weeks before Christmas Day. It

makes the day less special.

• People might get fed up with

Christmas music and food like

mince pies if it starts too long

before Christmas!

• Christmas is a religious celebration

and so the festivities should start on

Advent, not before.

Page 20: Primary KS2 · ‘Maligayang Pasko’ Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is traditionally eaten on Christmas Day, which is not a national holiday as only 1% of people are Christian. Japan

• It’s never too early for Christmas. It’s

fun!

• The earlier Christmas starts and the

more time people have to get into

the Christmas spirit, the better!

• People can start celebrating

Christmas whenever they choose!

• I think it’s nice to have a long build

up to a special event.
