Fifty years of fruitful service in Christ's vineyard is a fitting occasion for jubilation. Msgr. A. z~dala has reached this milestone. We of As­sumption parish unite our humblest efforts to pay tribute to our venerable pastor.

The . Rt. Reverend Monsignor Adalbert B. Zqdala

Adalbert was born March 16, 1885 in Falmierowo, principality of Posen, Poland. He was one of eight children born to Joseph Z!ldala and Magdalen Stasiek.

Unsettled conditions in Europe and rumors of wars prompted Joseph Z!ldala to seek peace and prosperity for his family in the promising land of' America. Adal­bert was only two years old when the family came to Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

The Z!ldala family did not bring any earthy riches. They were a poor family . But the staunch he·art of Joseph and Magdalen were endo.wed wth an und,aunted Polish spirit. A strong faith, inherited from their forefathers, supplied them with the necessary courage to labor fo~· a brighter future for their chHdren. To further the faith and to insure a better future . Adallbert was sent to the Immaculate Con­ception parochial schoo:J. It .was here that little Adalhert received his First Holy Communion. This was the first introduction to the a•ltar of God,. Already then the voice of God stiirred in his soul the desire to serve Him ' n a special way for the rest of his life.

His father was not one to deny his son the pursuit of such a lofty vocation. Unfortunately he died in 1899 before he could realize his son's ambitions. However, the Reverend W. Krzywonos, !pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church, seeing in Adalbert piety and keenness of mind, virtues necessary for a good priest, advised him to go to the Polish Seminary in Detro-it.

Adal!bert ada.pted himself to the routine of school life very quickly. He found time for study, prayer and spol'lts. At the conclusion of his classical studies in 1904 he received a s.ilver medal for excellence. Baseball was . and to this day is, his favorite sport. He also grew iro piety through fervent prayers and p\ous exercises.

Adalbert was -ordained .by Bishop Foley on .July 4, 1909 in the Ca-thedral of Saint Peter and Paul in Detroit. He said his first Solemn Mass on July 11 at Immaculate Conception church in Manito•woc.

The Seminary authori,ties requested the Bishop to retu~·n the newly ordained presbytet· to the Seminary at Orchard Lake. Fo·r two years he taught Latin and History. Young Father Adalbert. however. was more eager to undertake parish work. In 1911 he received his firs,t pastoral appointment to St. Stanislaus in Hillial'ldis, Michigan, where he worked for five vears. A.fter shor• staYs at St. Joseph's Academy in Adrian as Chap~ain, and as pasto~· at St. Mary's in Bronson and Mt. Ca.rmel in Wyandotte., Father Z!ldala received his appointment on December l'l . 1919 to Assump­tion Church in Detroit. This was the vineyard that. needed the abilities and zeal of a young priest, and Assumption parish was to become a labor of love for the next forty years.

With the growth 10f the ci.ty, the parish also ,grew. Need wrose for expansion ot church and school facilities. Shrewdly. with foresight and an economic purse build­ings were enlarged and a convent was built for the Sisters in 1924. Such work was not to go unre•warded. His Eminence. Edward Cardinal Mooney. chose him to serve on the board of diocesan consultors. Pope Pius XII elevate<'l F'ather zadala to a Domestic Prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor in Au g ust of 1944.

The spiritual accomplishments are iust a s envious. During the forty years ·as pastor of Assumption the~re were over. 6000 children bap·tized. 2100 marriages, 5000 prepared for First Holy Communion a d 2700 graduated from school.
