TOTI DAL MONTE (Soprano)

(with orchestral accompaniment) 12-inch double-sided Red 1,abel

Selva opaca-Act 2 (" Guglielmo Tell ") Rossini (Sung in Italian)

D.B. 831. Deh ! vieni, non tardar ... ... ... Mozart

(11 Le Nozze di Figaro ") (Sung in Italian)

THE records of Madame dal Monte that have already been issued prove her to be one of the finest coloratura sopranos in the world. But here she shows that she possesses

interpretive powers which are no less remarkable. Selva opaca with its long, smooth phrases requires a sense of line and a control of the breathing apparatus that are only to be found in the greatest singers, and there are few indeed who could overcome its many and varied difficulties with such consummate ease as this. Her rendering of Dell vieni is even more significant. The song is one of the richest gems from that unique treasure house Le Nozze di Figaro. It is Susanna's great chance, the moment when, serious for once, she reveals the depths of her love in a melody whose limpid purity has never been excelled even by Mozart. To enter into the spirit of the song as does Madame dal Monte is a privilege accorded to few.MARIA

JERITZA (Soprano) (with orchestral accompaniment)

10-inch double-sided Red Label

1Vissi Warte, vissi d'amore (" Tosca ") Puccini

D.A. 565 j (Sung in Italian) Voi lo sapete, o mamma (" Cavalleria Rusticana ")

(Sung in Italian) DTascagni IT is musicianship again that is the most prominent feature

of Madame Jeritza's singing. The lovely t'issi d'arte is aii air that attracts all vocalists who can overcome the formid-

able problems that it presents, but it needs an artist to reveal it to us in its true proportions. Madame Jeritza's climax is a finely calculated and magnificently executed piece of work, all the more effective for the restraint she has exercised throughout the earlier part of the song. This same restraint coupled with a genuine feeling for rhythm enables one to appreciate the beauty of Puccini's orchestral accompaniment, a feature in the piece that is seldom allowed to transpire. Poi to sapete, the song in which Santuzza tells her lover's mother the story of her betrayal, is an equally notable performance in a different vein.

APOLLO GRANFORTE (Baritone) (with orchestral accompaniment)

12-inch double-sided Red Label Credo in un Dio Crudel (" Otello ") ... Verdi

(Sung in Italian)D.B. 835 j 0 Monumento ! Regia e Bolgia Dogale ! Ponchielli

(" La Gioconda ") (Sung in Italian)

T HE name of Apollo Granforte is new to our lists. An Italian by birth this young singer emigrated at an early age to South America where a fortunate chance enabled him to

take up the study of music. After eight years of hard work he made his Operatic debut and from that moment to this his history has been one of steadily increasing fame (first in South America and then throughout the world), only interrupted by the great war during which he deserted the stage to fight for his country. His record reveals him as a singer with a superb voice and exceptional dramatic ability. How many men would have dared to present us on their first gramophone record two songs, both of which a*e the utterances of villains ? And yet Barnaba in La Gioconda is a spy of the Inquisition, and lago in Otello a rogue of an even darker colour. But Granforte knew what he was about. In each case he has visualised the whole situation and hurled it at us with all the force of a magnetic personality. Tremendous is the only word that will fit his rendering of Iago's magnificent (if un-Shakespearian) monologue " I believe in a cruel God who created me in his image."

BENIAMINO GIGLI (Tenor) (with orchestral accompaniment)

12-inch double-sided Red I,abel 0 Paradiso, dall'onde uscito ... ...11ererbcer

D.B. 109 (" L'Africana ") (Sung in Italian)

M appari tutt amor (11 Martha ) ... Flotow (Sung in Italian)

W need is there, at this time of day, to point out the ex- ý/ý! cellence of a record by Gigli ? Everyone who is interested

in operatic music and possesses a gramophone knows that among many great tenors he occupies a place apart. O Paradiso is the celebrated air in which the explorer, Vasco di Gama, greets the new land of Natal that he has discovered. Those broad phrases have never been more splendidly realised. 111'appari is another well-known song although it comes from an opera that is seldom heard. Here it is in the treatment of the melody and the sustained climax that Gigli shows his genius.

ELENA GERHARDT (Mezzo-Soprano)

(with pianoforte accompaniment) 10 inch double-sided Red babel

Wohin, Op. 25, No. 2 ... ... ... Schubert

D.A. 706 (Sung in German) 1 Das Lied im Griinen, Op. 115, No. 1

... Schubert

(Sung in German) E LENA GERHARDT recorded for His Master's Voice some

years ago, but her records are no longer on the catalogue. It is only natural, as the science of reproduction has made

tremendous strides, for her to return to the Company which is most successfully able to immortalise her great art. Consequently we propose to make a new collection, and these two lovely songs by Schubert should prove an excellent beginning. She stands, as everyone knows, for the model of what a Lieder-singer ought to be. The representative of a grand tradition, on her has fallen the mantle of the great, and nobly she wears it. Wohin, that adorable invocation of the bubbling brook, has never sounded so convincing as here and the equally perfect Lied im Griinen is interpreted with the same unfaltering sureness. Through both songs there runs a note of authority which even experienced singers would do well to heed. Finally more than a word of praise is due to the sympathetic and completely rhythmic playing of the Piano part.

ERIC MARSHALL (Baritone)

Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt ...

Tchaikovsky E. 386 (None but the weary heart) (Sung in German)

1,

Dreams ... ... ... ... ... ...

Wagner IN voicing the woes of the unhappy Mignon, Tchaikovsky,

one feels, is easing the burden of his own sorrow-laden heart, and it is this authentic note of something actually

experienced that makes Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt one of the most popular as well as one of the best of his songs. Dreams was written by Wagner as a " study for Tristan " and contains all the fragrance of that immortal masterpiece. The very phrases of the music were afterwards incorporated in the wonderful love- duet. Eric Marshall's performance will confirm the favourable impression created by his earlier record. Into the two very different moods he enters with entire success.

T HIS set of Songs from the Week-End Book is something of a novelty. It consists of Folk Songs of various kinds, old English Songs, and Army Marching Songs, all of them

inset, as it were, in a frame of Sea Shanties. Among an island people such as ourselves Sea Shanties form a branch of folk-song whose importance cannot be over-estimated, and deeply felt melodies like Shenandoah or rollicking tunes like Rio Grande are fully equal in musical value to anything that has sprung from the regions inland. Turning to the other songs of the series we find that the records cover a range which is truly amazing. Bucolic old English songs like 0 good ale, thou art my darling find themselves next door to such earnest and impassioned things as the Negro Spiritual Sinner, please, the tender Scottish air Aye waukin' oh is associated with the sprightly counterpoint of Byrd's Hey ho to the greenwood and the good-tempered humour of the British Tommy (in the Army Marching Songs) goes cheek by jowl

SONGS FROM THE WEEK-END BOOK-continued

with the remote wistfulness of a Norwegian folk tune. Lilleburlero is perhaps the most interesting item of all. Not only has it been attributed (wrongly, as it seems), to Henry Purcell, but it actually achieved a prominent place in history and " contributed not a little to the great revolution of 1688 " (Dr. Percy). Elsewhere it is referred to as the song which " sting a deluded prince (James II.) out of three kingdoms," and even such solid historians as Bishop Burnet and Lord Macaulay allude to it.

Here, then, we have ample material to provide a concert that will please the most diverse tastes. The man who is responsible for bringing it all together, presenting it in this attractive manner, and singing the solos throughout, is John Goss, one of the most intelligent and sensitive of our younger singers. He has made a special study of this kind of music and already holds a wide reputation for his singing of Sea Shanties. His warm, round voice, the clearness of his diction, and the invaluable aid of the Cathedral Male Voice Quartet, combine to provide some of the most attractive records that have appeared for a long time.

O Mistress mine ... ... ... ... Roger Quiller

1 Fair House of Joy ... ... ... Roger Quilter

ONE of the characteristics of Shakespeare that puts him head and shoulders above other poets is his ability to convey a whole philosophy within the confines of a simple lyric.

0 Mistress mine contains only one word of more than two syllables (" hereafter "), the thought is transparently simple throughout, and yet it tells us more about life than is to be found in many ponderous volumes. The virtue of Quilter's setting is that it allows for the philosophy without losing sight of the lyricism. Fair house of joy is not by Shakespeare but it has a touch of the same oesthetic value, both in the words and the music. We congratulate Derek Oldham both on his choice of songs and his rendering of them.HARRY

ROYAL ALBERT HALL ORCHESTRA

(conducted by SIR LANDON RONALD)

12-inch double-sided Black Lahel

D. 996 1 Dance of the Hours-Parts 1 and 2 ... Ponchiettl 1 (11 La Gioconda ")

T HE Darce of the Hours comes near the beginning of the Third Act of La Gioconda. A gay and noble company is assembled in the palace hall and the dancers come on to

entertain them. They represent the various hours of the day. After a few bars of preluding The Hours of the Day-break appear to strains of fairy-like delicacy. The music swells out for a moment at the conclusion of their dance to indicate the applause of the audience and then dies down once more as we approach the dainty Dance of the Hours of Day. A change to the minor and a melody in the tenor register ushers in The Hours of Evening, and finally (on the second side) even darker colours are used to depict The Hours of the Night. Various episodes follow but the scoring always remains light_until we reach the Finale, a brilliant, rhythmic move- ment employing the full resources of the orchestra.

Music of this kind gives one a good idea of the array of talent that goes to make up the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra. Only an organisation in which every single player is a master of his instrument would dare to touch a selection in which even the softest sounds are clearly heard. The wood-wind especially deserve a vote of thanks to themselves.

ONE has only to listen to these two heavenly melodies to realise how desirable it was that they should be brought within the reach of all music-lovers by means of the gramo-

phone. Thomas Moore and Elgar have both of them strong personalities and their music is stamped with an unmistakable mark. The player is Cedric Sharpe and he requires no introduc- tion. Here, as ever, he proves an eloquent advocate of the ex- pressive powers of the 'Cello.

D. 995 Caprice Espagnole, Op. 37 ... ... .lloszkowski JBohemian Dance ... ... ... ... Smetana

THESl3 two pieces, the one Spanish in character, the other Bohemian, provide a comparison between the styles of two very different nations that has an obvious interest. But

they are notable from another point of view as first-rate examples of the possibilities of the modern Grand Piano when played by a supreme executant such as Backhaus and written for by skilful composers who were fully aware of the resources of the instrument. Such an amazing display of virtuosity as we get here is not often to be heard ; every note is in its place and struck with just that amount of force, just that quality of touch, which will give it its proper value in the general scheme. And above all there is the rhythm imbuing the whole with such immense vitality and giving the record that tonic quality which is its best recommendation.

THERE may possibly be greater composers than Grieg : that is a matter for the critics to decide. Certainly there are none who are better loved, and the innumerable admirers of

the Norwegian tone-poet will experience something of a thrill when they see that five of his characteristic little pieces have been in- cluded on a single double-sided record. The ll'edding Day is too old a favourite for comment to serve any useful purpose and considerations of space forbid us to do more than refer generally to the picturesqueness, the vivacity, and the wayward whimsica- lity that succeed each other in the four shorter pieces. The titles show that Una Bourne has been liberal in supplying us with quantity, but our cars soon tell us that she has not done so at the expense of quality. For

THF, Lustspiel Overture is just such a full-blooded piece as one expects, but it manages to find room, nevertheless, for many attractive touches which give the players of the

Coldstream Guards' Band opportunities of which they are not slow to avail themselves. La I'oix des Cloches strikes a quiet, thoughtful mood to which the use of bells gives a delightful piquancy. This composition was inspired by the famous poem " Excelsior."

E VERY now and then there appears a record that seems to have been born under a lucky star. This is one such. The two pieces are well contrasted and each of them is

music that is thoroughly worth while. The rendering is an example of the Gresham Singers at their splendid best ; and the recording is as near perfection as anything can be in this imperfect world. No one interested in concerted vocal music can possibly afford to neglect such an achievement.

One can picture the happy man leading his "sweetie " to the village church, where he will " Knock at the door-walk right in." For those among us who have cares--and which of us has not ?- we confidently offer the singer's advice " Get yourself a broom and sweep your troubles away," only adding that the ideal broom is Frank Cruinit's record.
