Success of Airline RM 8
In 1985, American Airlines (AA) was threatened on its core routes by the low-fare carrier PeopleExpress, after deregulation
AA developed RM program
PeopleExpress lack of a strong computer reservation system and went out of business.

RM business environment
Capacity is limited and immediately perishable.
Commitments need to be made when future demand
is uncertain.
Firm can differentiate among customer segments.
The same unit of capacity can be used to deliver
many different products or services.
Firms are profit-oriented and have broad freedom
of action.
10
Market segmentation
Group pricing
Channel pricing
Regional pricing
Time-based differentiation
Product engineered
Coupons and rebates
Volume discounts
Correlated with
customers’ willingness
to pay
Minimal information to
segment market
Enforceability
Culturally acceptable
11
Differential pricing strategies Effective “fences”
Group pricing 12
Examples
Senior citizen discounts at diners
Software discounts to universities
Student discounts at movie theaters
“Ladies night” at bars
Correlation between group members and price
sensitivity
Channel and regional pricing 13

Time-based differentiation 14
Examples
Amazon.com different delivery times
Dell different amounts of repair time (overnight vs within a week)
Lunch specials
Low-season vacation packages
Markdown management: Fashion goods
Passenger airlines
Price-sensitive customers shifted to off-peak periods
Increase supply availability during peak periods
Product engineered 15
Examples
Branding
More upscale brand vs Bargain brand (house or generic brand)
Add-on pricing strategies
Product versioning and bundling
Vertical product lines: Inferior or superior variant
Ocean-view room vs parking-lot-view room
Rental car (e.g., Economy, Mid-size, Full-size)
Software (e.g., Basic vs Pro)
Horizontal product lines
“Classic” Coke, Diet Coke, Cherry Coke, Coke Zero
Coupons and rebates 16
Volume discounts 17
Examples
A six-pack of beer costs less than six times the cost of single bottle
Larger boxes of detergent cost less per ounce than smaller boxes
Cellphone monthly plan
Reasons
Transaction or order costs
Decreasing marginal utility
Increasing price sensitivity
Price sensitivity 18
If all else remains equal, demand for product or
service will decrease with an increase in price
ถา้ตั้งราคาชิ้ นละ 230 บาท ขายสินคา้ได ้540 ชิ้ น

ควรตั้งราคาท่ี 230 บาท หรือ 265 บาท?
